Dear Friends,
We are living through uncertain and challenging times at
the moment, aren’t we? It seems that on all sorts of
fronts there is confusion and discord, the political unrest
in our country, the rising prices, the war in the Ukraine,
the rapidly changing climate, let alone any personal
circumstances. Now that’s not a great way to start this
message, is it? But we have to be realistic, there is
uncertainty and change all around us. We can become
consumed with fear and anxiety if we let these issues
bear down on us, so what do we do about it?
We can’t ignore the effects of climate change, in particular. We do need to look
at how we can be good stewards of God’s creation, how each one of us in our
own small way can make a difference. If we just change one thing in our lives
which may reduce our carbon output it would help and when we do it does make
us feel better, more positive.
I have to say that when I feel overwhelmed by mounting issues, I stop take a
breath and if possible, walk out into the beauty of creation. It may be a walk into
the garden or into our glorious countryside and if that’s not possible just look at
a bunch of flowers smiling at me from a vase. When I do it lifts my spirit and
reminds me of God and my place in His creation.
The world around us may be changing, may be challenging, and even
threatening but what is so wonderful, and reassuring is that God never changes.
The love of God brought to us through the birth death and resurrection of Christ
is the constant in our lives.
There will always be change and challenge in our lives and how we deal with it
can vary and does take energy. We are recharged with energy each time we
look at the cross and remember what Christ has done for us, opened the
pathway to God so that time and again we can be filled with His love, filled with
His spirit and that keeps us going. We must never be weighed down, we must
look around us at creation, the good things of our world and let the light of Christ
shine into our hearts again and again. That light which will penetrate even the
deepest darkness, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not
overcome it.” John 1:5 Canon Cate Edmonds

Hello and welcome to the September
edition of the Parish news.
I hope you’ve been enjoying your summer, and that
oppressively hot period in early August didn’t cause
too many problems. I know that down in Lyme the
trades people had a bumper period and I tried parking a couple of times, only to
find I had to queue or wait for a space! It seems to have cooled down a little now
and it would be good to get plenty of gentle steady rain (at night) and some warm
bright days during this month!
So much is going on in September, the magazine is full of things re-starting, new
groups and events. The new Knit & Chatter group that meets on a Wednesday
afternoons in the church would love to see you. You don’t even have to be able to
knit to go along! They’re happy to teach you, or you can just sit and chat with them
while enjoying a cup of tea. I hope you know that ‘those that knit make the best
cups of tea’? Prove me wrong!
Now for a plug for my group. Many will know that I run the Kids Saturday Football
(see below) and if you’ve got young children or grand children, bring them along
on Saturday 10th September @ 9am for our first meet of the year! The best thing
is that there’s a “Big Breakfast” in the Village Hall that day, and you can reward
yourselves with a fry up for being the perfect guardian!
Keep Safe, and enjoy the month. Ed

When the sun goes edgewise – and daytime equals night
23rd September is the autumnal equinox (if you live in the northern hemisphere)
or the vernal (Spring) equinox (if you live in the southern hemisphere) The equi-
noxes occur in March and September, when the Sun is ‘edgewise’ to the Earth’s
axis of rotation, so that everywhere on earth has twelve hours of daylight and
twelve hours of darkness.

First Thursday of each month
We begin again on Thursday 1st September starting at 10.30am
All are welcome, young and old alike and we’re hoping to be able to entice all
those who used to attend assuming they’re still able. It’s a very informal
affair to be held in the lounge adjacent to the Cafe and Pat Dench herself will
be there to welcome everyone. I think coffee will be £1.00 and biscuits will
be provided for free. It’s an opportunity to have a chat and catch up with
friends who may not have been able to see each other a while.
Lifts will be available for those who need it and I would ask that folk contact
either myself 01297-442095 or David and Ann Hardman 01297-444799 to
arrange. We also hope that some of those who attend may be able to offer
lifts also. If folk need any further help or information then do contact us.

News from the Church
The Parish Clock at Uplyme Church
We are still fund raising in order to get the chimes working again.
Did you know that to keep the clock telling the time it has to be wound every
week?
To do that you have to climb up the spiral staircase in the tower.
Fix the heavy arm lever to the correct part of the winding system and then turn it
22 times. Every week.
When the chimes are working – they have to be wound too.
Another big lever which has to be turned 64 tunes!
Do you know who winds the clock every single week of the year?
Many of you will know him.
A lovely gentleman called James Booth.
We are so fortunate to have this quiet man looking after the clock.
Thank you James.
Update on the Churchyard
East Devon County Council now maintain our churchyard with the church paying
for a private contractor to mow on alternate months. We also arrange a “tidy up
time” once or twice a year to help keep everything as best we can. To encourage
wild life, insects and the bees, certain areas of the yard have been sown with wild
flower seeds and will be left to grow. So if you see areas of wild looking untidy
growth, pause a while and see the beauty of wild flowers and remember the wild-
life enjoying them too!
Uplyme Church is always open!
Uplyme Church is unlocked each morning by a very generous neighbour.
Apart from holidays, Anne Willett walks up the church path each day to open
the church – A very big thank you. And the doors remain open until another volun-
teer comes to lock up early evening.
If you spend any time up in the church on any day of the week it is wonderful to
see and to meet people visiting. Some come for a little peace and quiet. Some
come to pray. Some come because they are interested in the history of the
church. Some come to visit a grave and place flowers.
Some come and enjoy a sandwich whilst sitting on one of the benches. Some
come to meet up and have a chat. Whatever the reason – everyone is welcome.
And if you haven’t been inside recently, I challenge you to do so and to count the
stars on the ceiling…...how many?
