Components of Career Decision Making
1. Health Science Education(HSE): p rograms that can prepare a student for immediate
employment in many health care careers or for additional education after graduation.
2. Associate’s Degree: a warded by a career/technical school or a community college after
completion of a prescribed two year course of study.
3. Bachelor’s Degree: awarded by a college or university after a prescribed course of study
that usually lasts for four or more years.
4. Master’s Degree: a warded by a college or university after completion of one or more
years of work beyond a bachelor’s degree.
5. Doctoral Degree: a warded by a college or university after completion of two or more
years of work beyond a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Some doctorates can require four
to six years of additional study.
6. Certification: a person has fulfilled the requirements of education and performance and
meets the standards and qualifications established by the professional association or
government agency that regulates a particular career.
7. Registration: process whereby a regulatory body in a given health care area administers
examinations and/or maintains a list if qualified personnel.
8. Licensure: p rocess by which a government agency authorizes individuals to work i a
given occupation.
9. Continuing Education Units(CEUs): r equired to renew licenses or maintain
certification or registration in many states.
10. Multiskilled Worker: a h ealth team member with at least the education of a nurse
assistant who has been trained to perform selected nursing skills and selected skills from
the allied health professions under the supervision of a registered nurse.
11. Entrepreneur: a nd individual who organizes and manages a business and assumes its
risks.
