Strengthening Our FoundaƟon

The Rocky Mountain Conservancy provides services and ehances Rocky Mountain Na onal
Park and surrounding public lands. The best way to do that is with a strong business model
and efficient prac ces.

Increased Membership for Increased Support

Our membership serves to build a cons tuency of support for the park. It informs them
about our mission and ac vi es, connects them to learning opportuni es and inspires them
to be supporters of future park projects. This year’s recruitment efforts resulted in 1,562
new members for the Conservancy. The annual membership picnic at Hidden Valley, with a
popular local bluegrass band and wandering historical figures promo ng the park’s 100th an-
niversary, drew more than 300 par cipants for a fun day celebra ng Rocky’s centennial. New
members-only events were ini ated this year that engaged members with the Conservancy’s
Conserva on Corps crew, including a 1st annual Na onal Trails Day in the park and a trail
restora on day in the Na onal Forest.

In addi on to suppor ng the opera ons of the Rocky Mountain Conservancy, the funds generated through the

sale of educa onal products in the five Nature Stores in Rocky help the park in two ways: by providing educa onal

materials to expand the visitor experience; and by funding educa onal programs and projects of the na onal park.

Park Centennial

From September 4, 2014, through September 4, 2015, Rocky Mountain Na onal Park celebrated the park’s 100th
anniversary. The Conservancy was involved at the start, from the design of the official logo to centennial product
development. More than 60,000 centennial items were sold, accoun ng for $700,000 in sales this year, including
items such as the Pendleton Na onal Park blanket that has become a part of Pendleton’s na onal park collec on,
and a unique t-shirt design that has been recognized throughout the country. Visitor sales areas were set up at the
Historic Holzwarth site, and at the Glacier Basin Campground for the opening and closing centennial ceremonies
that was a ended by Na onal Park and Colorado state officials. The year brought together people from local and
surrounding communi es and inspired new stewards of our public lands.

ConservaƟon Corps Crews Help Meet
Park RestoraƟon Needs

Conserva on Corps crews spent eleven weeks living, working and learn-
ing about conserva on efforts and natural resource management in public
lands. Alongside the Na onal Park Service and U.S.D.A. Forest Service, this
group of 36 youth spend more than three hundred hours comple ng on-the-
ground projects, including building and maintaining trails, restoring habitat
and preserving cultural resources. To complement their season, the crews par cipate
in educa onal programs, professional trainings and career development ac vi es.

In 2015, the Conservancy added the newest crew to its program – the Kawuneeche Crew lived and worked in the
Kawuneeche Valley on the west side of Rocky. This crew helped park staff restore two historic structures: a Civilian
Conserva on Corps Mess Hall at Lake Irene and the historic Li le Buckaroo Barn along the Colorado River.

Field InsƟtute Program Reaches New Audiences

Conservancy Field Ins tute classes offer hands-on learning experiences in Rocky Mountain Na onal Park. In 2015, Field

Ins tute classes served more par cipants than in any other year prior (5,643) and our kids/family classes con nues

to grow. We also held 78 outreach programs with 3,281 par cipants which translates into more custom classes and

presenta ons to the public during this year than ever before.

A significant highlight this year was the newly established Sunset Safari bus Fun Numbers
tour. This 4-hour bus adventure included colorful historic personali es, unique
adapta ons of alpine flora, explora ons of geologic forma ons, and a stroll $75,821 730 kids

Centennial CelebraƟon and Cascade CoƩages Campaign Launch

The Centennial Capital Campaign for Cascade Co ages was ini ated in late 2014 and publicly launched at a
Centennial Celebra on event on September 3, 2015. This event, held at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, was
a ended by over 200 friends, donors and partners. The celebra on both highlighted the successes of the
past 100 years and launched the work of the next 100 years by announcing the $3.4 million Cascade Co ages
campaign. The event included speakers Governor John Hickenlooper, Senator Mark Udall, Director of the

Na onal Park Service, Jon Jarvis, and President and CEO of the Na onal Park Founda on, Will Shafroth.

By the end of 2015, the Conservancy had received nearly $1.6 million in cash and pledged gi s for this campaign.

Conservancy Transfers Johnson Property to Rocky

Comple ng a land protec on effort that began in 2012, the Rocky Mountain Conservancy transferred the

Johnson Property to Rocky Mountain Na onal Park in July 2015. In 2012, Rocky Mountain Na onal Park

iden fied the private inholding known as the Johnson Property as a high priority for acquisi on and enlisted

the Conservancy’s assistance to raise the needed funds. The 3.89-acre parcel is located on the park’s west

side in the scenic Kawuneeche Valley, home of the headwaters of the Colorado River, and within view of the

Con nental Divide Trail. More than 900 donors contributed to the $400,000 project to purchase the Johnson

Property so that it could be transferred to RMNP for permanent Fun Numbers
protec on. The property was purchased by the Conservancy in February,

2013. The park will restore the land to its natural state, enhancing CONSERVANCY COLORADO GIVES

year-long commemora on and celebra on of RMNP’s first century as one
of the country’s outstanding and beloved na onal parks.

The exhibit included both studio and plein air pain ngs from 22 na onally
recognized professional ar sts hailing from all over the United States. The
works all were created during RMNP’s Centennial Year and all featured the
park. Each pain ng also included a commemora ve cer ficate, signed by

Board Members Looking Forward…

Don Cheley (President) As seen in this report, the Rocky Mountain Conservancy accom-
Denver, CO plished a great deal during the park’s centennial year, with a great
deal of help from our members and donors. While it is temp ng to
Julie Harrington (Vice President) spend the next year or two just reveling in our successes, there is
Denver, CO s ll so much yet undone.+-

Timothy Davis (Treasurer)  Due to the overwhelming response to the Centennial Campaign
Denver, CO to acquire Cascade Co ages, we hope to be moving forward togeth-
er with the Na onal Park Service next year to begin the planning
Elizabeth Grant (Secretary) phase for the property, including determining the best and highest
Denver, CO use of the Co ages.

Doug Campbell  Following the protec on of the park’s highest priority inholding,
Greeley, CO we will be looking to acquire the next priority acquisi on, a 12-acre
parcel in Wild Basin.
Charles Cofas
Estes Park, CO  In 2016, it will be the tenth anniversary of the Conservancy’s Next
Genera on Fund programs. We hope to conduct a full evalua on
Katherine Dines of their effec veness and how the programs can be improved and
Denver, CO capacity increased to connect even more youth and young adults to
the park and their natural world.
Howard Fry
Castle Rock, CO  Three ambi ous trail projects are on the drawing boards for
the park: a new accessible trail for the Alluvial Fan area and major
Charles Jerden repairs to the Lily Lake Trail.
Thornton, CO
 Of course, there will be myriad of smaller, yet no less important,
Joel Mayo projects, including improved exhibits, new publica ons and con n-
Centennial, CO ued facility enhancements.

James Pickering As with any of our goals for the future, success in achieving them is
Estes Park, CO dependent upon the support from our friends and partners. As the
next year unfolds we will be reaching out with opportuni es for you
Jan Robertson to become involved. Stay tuned….
