Department of Pharmaceutical
Pharmacology & Chemistry
(Pharmaceutical Pharmacology
Division)
INTRODUCTION :
Our main teaching commitments are to the undergraduate B.Pharm students. We teach
in the broad areas of Pharmacology and Chemistry. All academic staffs share a
commitment to top-quality teaching which emphasizes general principles and
integrates it into the latest findings of modern research.
The over-arching theme of research in the pharmacology division is to discover the
fundamental mechanisms which underlie important problems in pharmacology. The
division has previously had strong interests in areas of cancer pharmacology, oxidative
stress and inflammation. Additionally present research interests also emphasize other
areas such neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, diabetes and wound
healing. Research under the chemistry division is focused on drug discovery from
natural resources and the analysis of herbal medicines. Researchers conduct basic and
applied multidisciplinary research approaches to understand the biological and
chemical properties of medicinal plants for potential development into pharmaceuticals
and nutraceuticals.
The graduate program provides research opportunities for highly qualified, motivated
students in all of these areas. Researchers in the Department use a variety of
techniques and the Department is well equipped with up to date facilities which permit
the investigation of drug action.

COLLABORATIVE DRUG DISCOVERY RESEARCH GROUP (CDDR)
• The niche of CDDR group focuses on the consumption of
functional foods (i.e. probiotics) to prevent metabolic Head
disorders and promote successful aging. This is in line with Prof. Dr. Kalavathy Ramasamy
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 which promises (email: [email protected]
to ensure food security and nutrition within sustainable food Members
systems.
• This research emphasis is timely as the global potential for AP. Dr. Lim Siong Meng
functional foods is significant and growing because of AP Dr. Fazlin Mohd Fauzi
increasing health consciousness and the self-care trends Dr Faezah Binti Sabirin
associated with aging, knowledgeable and wealthier Dr Nurul Aqmar Mohamad Nor
consumers.
• To date, Malaysia remains a profitable import market for Hazalin
products that have verified health benefits because of the lack Mdm Nurul Huda Musa
of established domestic production options. This raises the Mdm Nur Syafiqah Rahim
need for intensified research and development of local
functional food.
