Staff Member Profile Feature – Frank Nocera, Business Development Manager, GalconWhat do you do at Sentek?I am the Business Development Manager for Galcon. I work with the Australian distributors for the Galcon product s, making it a very smooth transaction between them ordering from us, receiving goods from Israel and distribut ion to the dealer network. How long have you worked for Sentek?Eighteen months. What do you like most about working for Sentek?I reckon it’s the people. Not only the customers – good group of customers we’ve got – but it’s a very diverse group of people working here. I think after my first day my wife asked, “What it’s like?” and I said, “Gee there’s a lot of smart people working there, probably one of the smartest groups of people I’ve ever worked with.”What is your favourite memory at Sentek? It was at the Irrigation Australia Expo, the first Expo I did working for Sentek, and some random guy walked up to the stand and said, “Sentek probes, I’ve got one of those! I’ve had it for about fifteen years and it still works , it’s fantastic I wouldn’t be able to live without it.” And I’ve got to admit, when you get customers coming in and vouching for how good it is, that’s really good. That has happened since too, FutureAg last year was the same, there were multiple people saying, “Yep, I’ve had one of these they’re fantastic.”What do you like to do in your spare time?Spare time is time to spend with family, or go on drives with my wife. We like to go down south, McLaren Vale along the coast, or the Barossa Valley, we have lots to choose from, don’t we? We would go for a drive, have a meal, go for the views and pop into one or two vineyards or wineries, top up the wine collection. In the McLaren Vale I recommend the Lloyd brothers, small place there but a really nice place, it’s not one of the big commercial ones but if you walk in there, you might see people sitting out side and a couple people inside, there’s no coaches or buses out the front and a whole heap of tourists, and they make a really good wine and it’s reasonably priced too. What is a fun fact about you?I am a blood donor, that’s not really fun , is it? Thirty -four donations so far, I’ve been doing that for a long time.Another would be that I set the 100m sprint record for under -13s at high school and low and behold it was still active, so I’m still the official holder, no one broke the record before the school shut down in 2006.

Case Study: Sentek Probes and Kiwi MoriaThe following case study describes an experience shared by one of our valued dealers, Sherena, in Southern Italy . It followsthe installation of a 60 cm Sentek Drill & Drop probe connected to a Compact data transmission unit . The operat ion consists of a G3 Kiwi orchard on Hayward rootstock, planted in 2017, had begun to show the first symptoms of Kiwi Moria, as in Figure 1. Sentek soil moisture monitoring is generally installed to answer two specific questions: when to irrigate and how much water to apply. In this case, however, Sentek soil moisture monitoring equipment was installed to gain insights into below -ground root absorption and wetting volume.Agronomists working with th e farm identified multiple factors that were contributing to poor growingconditions, including soil type, a lack of ridging, rootstock selection and the existing irrigation desig n. At the time, the orchard was irrigated with a single drip line, creating a very narrow wett ed surface, consequently reducing the area explored by the root system. The data in IrriMAX Live also revealed that the irrigation volume was excessive, as the depth of irrigation exceeded the depth of root absorption. For this reason, the farm manager opted for a double drip line spaced 30 cm apart and replaced the vibrating sprinkler with a 35 l/h r sprinkler positioned every two metres. This combination ensured greater uniformity of wetting and expanded the wetted surface (4 m diameter ) whilst reducing moisture close to the trunk (see Figure 2 ).Figures 3 and 4 below show the soil moisture trends in July 2023 (the first year of monitoring) and July 2025 (the third season after the changes described above were implemented). The main difference lies in the strength of root absorption, which in 2025 was very active within the top 40 cm, thanks to optimised irrigation management. The Sentek probe and software provided the basis for a better understanding of plant behaviour, aiming to create the best possible growth conditions, including a better water -oxygen balance.Figure 2: Water Distribution MapFigure 1: Effects of Kiwi Moria

The in sight s obtained via the Drill & Drop probe and on -site agronomic evaluations by Sherena’s team helped contain and stop the spread of Kiwi Moria. The farm is currently rep lac ing all affected plants and is looking forward to improved yields and quality into the future.Figure 3: Moisture trends of the kiwi farm in 2023 on IrriMAX LiveFigure 4: Moisture trends of the kiwi farm in 2025 on IrriMAX LiveFigure 5: The kiwi orchard during the 2025 season
