Unit Plan Overview

The Unit Plan Overview assists teachers in understanding which pieces of the Unit Plan will be used daily. It lists
the Assessment pieces, Lesson Plans and Student Web Lessons that the teacher will need for a particular day.
Sample information and format is included below.

Day 1

Diagnostic Assessment
Diagnostic Performance Assessment (See diagnostic assessment)
Teacher completes a checklist as students demonstrate knowledge of two and three-dimensional shapes and map skills!!!

Day 2

Lesson Plan
Sammy Discovers Shapes at School
The teacher introduces the students to maps, takes them on a grand tour of the school campus, and then involves them
in real world experiences using maps!

Day 3

Lesson Plan
Learn the Shapes!
Students are introduced to two-dimensional shapes and explore their similarities and differences. They go on a “Shape
Search” and create illustrations of shapes to share with their peers!

Day 4

Lesson Plan
Explore Three-Dimensional Shapes!
Students are “Shapes” for the day. They are assigned to a shape group and will be exploring three-dimensional shapes.
They are continuing to review map skills and two-dimensional shapes while being involved in fun and enriching activities.

Day 5

Lesson Plan
Create a Map!!
Students are independently and actively involved in creating their own school campus maps and they also review two- and
three- dimensional shapes.

Day 6

Lesson Plan
Shape City
Students engage in review activities, identifying two- and three-dimensional shapes, and by describing
similarities/differences and attributes. The teacher creates a model building. Then, students design and construct
buildings to be added to a class Shape City.

Summative assessment should begin today and will probably take two days to complete. See Summative Assessment (see
Extensions) for procedures and materials.

Summative Assessment for Shapes Are Everywhere at School (See Summ. Assessment)
Teacher will complete checklist as students demonstrate mastery of knowledge of two and three-dimensional shapes and
maps. Students will complete a worksheet to demonstrate mastery of targeted skills.
