INTRODUCTION
Speech Delay (Alalia)
● The verbal expression of language and
includes articulation; is the actual
process of making sounds.
● E.g: A child with speech delay might use
words and phrase to express ideas but
be hard to understand
Language Development
• Giving and getting information. It is understanding
and being understood through communication –
verbal, nonverbal and written.
• E.g: A child with language delay might say words well
but only able to put two words together.
Does Speech Delay Affect Child’s
Development?
● Present with behavioural and social emotional
problems both in childhood and as adults.
● Have a difficult time communicating and bonding
with peers – can effect psychosocial health.
Signs & Symptoms 3 Years Old

What Cause Speech Delay?
• An oral impairment, like problems with
the tongue or palate (the roof of the
mouth)
• A short frenulum (the fold beneath the
tongue), which can limit tongue
movement.
• Hearing problems also can affect speech.
• Kids who have trouble hearing may have trouble saying,
understanding, imitating and using language.
