In 1982 Brooks won the Greg Shackleton Australian News Correspondents scholarship to the journalism master’s program at Columbia University in New York City. Later she worked for The Wall Street Journal, where she covered crises in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. COMMUNITY INITIATIVES Read Together Palm Beach County Our one-book, one-community campaign, in which adults read the same book and gather to discuss the key themes in book discussions and in book clubs. Read for the Record Palm Beach County The Coalition coordinates hundreds of volunteers and municipal leaders each year to read a high-quality chosen book to thousands of children on the same day. 15.5% of the 14,334 babies born in Palm Beach County in 2019 were to mothers who had not graduated from high school. The Coalition provides 9 programs countywide to help individuals improve their literacy skills and is active in the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading to help children learn to read so they may read to learn. 29% of residents age five or older speak a language other than English. 52% of our third graders read below grade level. 22.2%of adults age 16 or older in Palm Beach County lack basic literacy skills.
