of the first one—there was a
real energy.”

Can the momentum be sus-
tained—and grow? For those
who know William well, the an-
swer is yes. “It wouldn’t be fair
to say the future of the planet
is on William’s shoulders,” says
Mayhew. “[But] I think it has
every chance of succeeding and
being very influential. I admire
him for the ambition of what
he’s trying to achieve.”

And he’s looking to bring his
mission around the world and
across the generations. “This
is just the start,” William tells
People. “I’m thrilled that in 2022
the Earthshot Prize will be
heading to the United States—
where we will continue to
spread this vital message of ur-
