Although his father is rarely at home, he does expect certain standards from his family and can be very domineering. On a stormy fog bound day in the Winter Byron’s mother is running late, so to get them to school on time she decides to take a short cut through the “rough” part of town, this decision turns the whole of Byron's, his mother and his sisters life into turmoil. Byron witnesses an accident that his mother is unaware of and he becomes obsessed to tell his mother the truth without her becoming upset. There then follows a series of meetings with a family from the “rough” part of town, which turns into a very unlikely friendship between Byron’s mother and a young girls mother – Beverley. This friendship develops through fear of the accident becoming known to others, especially Byron’s father and sadly the loneliness of his mother. Beverley uses the situation to try and improve her life by emotionally threatening Byron’s mom saying she will tell Byron’s father of the accident and Byron’s mother so desperate for her husband not to know together with so desperately wanting friendship agrees to Beverley’s demands. This is not a book I will read again. Although the reading group in general was split, with some members saying they really enjoyed reading it, certainly one to make your own mind up about. In preparation for their winter hibernation they need to be in good health to get them through those cold months. The hedgehog is in decline mainly because of human activity and urbanisation, but we can do something to help. Leaving water out for them. A heavy shallow bowl is the best option. Never give them milk, they are lactose intolerant and this can cause death. Cat biscuits or cat food are a good food supply, but no cakes pastries or “junk food” this is as unhealthy for a hedgehog as it is for humans. Remember they come out for food at night so putting it out late means it is less likely to be eaten by cats. Hedgehogs love bugs and snails and everything that is an enemy to the gardener, so slug pellets are an absolute no, the hogs wont eat the pellets but they will eat the snail that has consumed it, then the hedgehog dies. By encouraging hedgehogs you will keep these pests down as they have large appetites and will keep returning if they find a five star establishment. A small part of the garden left at its own will is a perfect habitat for a hedgehog, you may be lucky enough for them to keep a nest. They love leaves, logs and long grass, and leave a small access route out of your garden for them as they can travel large distances in the night looking for food. Always be careful when clearing areas particularly when using strimmer's. The event will be focused around the Village Hall, where a Scarecrow Trail will begin taking visitors on three routes around the village so that they can see the many scarecrow creations. It is anticipated there will be well over 100 scarecrows on display. Young children can also join in the Scarecrow Quiz, taking part gives them one of the very popular Scarecrow badges. There will also be scarecrows in St Chad’s Church plus a raffle with several prizes, the first prize being a special scarecrow cake.
