W elcome to our Spring edition of The Clock and Park, your local magazines, full of events that are local to you, including tradespeople, professionals and retailers all ready to give you the first class service that you deserve. Inside this month we have our regular review from the Finchfield Readers’ group with a mixed response on whether this is a good read or not. We have requests from community gardeners in Finchfield for help in maintaining the beauty of our open spaces, The Friends of the Coppice and The Bantock Bugs all need some help in tidying up after winter and getting ready for the spring, they don’t ask for much time but are grateful for all the help they can get. We have a word of warning from the rangers at Kinver edge and a colourful Spring scavenger hunt, something interesting for the children when you are out and about. If you cant get out and about try the easy peasy cupcakes brilliant for kids and grown ups to make and even easier to eat! My mum has done a little blog page on her current slide into retirement, she is busier now than she has ever been, personally I think she is mad! Why she is not sitting back, doing a bit of knitting watching telly, dozing and reading books I don’t know. Enjoy the Spring and all the beauty it brings. Lucy. 18 To advertise call: 07540 087840 or email [email protected] Pattingham Drama Group presents the comedy ‘HEROES’. Members of Pattingham Drama, three in particular who play the heroes, are busy rehearsing their next performance which is a delightful play set in France in 1959 about three First World War veterans who now live in a home for old soldiers. There is a feeling of waiting for the inevitable demise, but is a very funny comedy. In Tom Stoppard's hilarious and poignant translation of Gerald Sibleyras's Heroes, we meet three First World War veterans who pass their monotony-filled days in a military hospital by engaging in verbal battles of long-forgotten military campaigns, grumblings about the staff, and reflections on their lives. Henri is afflicted by a gammy leg, Gustave suffers from agoraphobia, and Philippe passes out because of a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain. Their cantankerous camaraderie becomes strained when Gustave conjures up an escape plan. Looking over the cemetery to the poplars beyond, they dream of freedom. Will today be the day they finally make it to Indochina or perhaps only as far as the top of the hill? The comedy will be performed by Pattingham Drama Group at Pattingham Village Hall from 8th – 11th May 2024. Tickets £10 available from Chris Lyon (Tel. No. 01902 700748), online at [email protected], and Drama Group members. 22 To advertise call: 07540 087840 or email [email protected] HOW TO MAKE A SUMMER HANGING BASKET Are you one of those people who buy their Summer hanging baskets?, and you now have a fine collection of empty wire baskets in your shed. Why not this year for a change try making your own, they are fun and give much more satisfaction knowing that they are your own creation. You will need A wire basket Compost Sphagnum moss Summer bedding plants A watering can with a rose attachment Slow release granular fertiliser Water retaining crystals. Step 1. Prepare the compost and moss. Mix your compost with the slow release granular fertiliser and water retaining crystals. This will nourish your plants and give them a better chance of survival. With your moss soak it in a bucket of water for an hour or so before planting. Step 2. Line the basket Place your basket on a pot to keep it steady and line the bottom with a layer of moss, make sure it is quite thick and wring out any excess water before you start. Place plants to trail protruding from the sides of the basket. Continue to line the basket with a second ring of moss on top of the plants, leaving the centre clear, fill the centre with your compost , up to the top of your moss ring. Step 3. Repeat the process of lining and filling, placing the plants in alternate holes to that of the pervious layer to ensure that you have an attractive pattern. Make sure the roots come in contact with the soil in the basket. With your top ring of moss wrap it round the rim of the basket to get a nice finish. Step 4. Planting. If you have used the water retaining crystals they will expand dramatically, so before filling the top of the basket leave the basket for a couple of hours giving them time to expand, you can then remove the excess soil. You can then continue to fill the top of your basket. Water your basket well, and keep it well watered throughout the summer. Suggested Plants Begonia (Trailing Begonia) Bidens Felicia amelloides (Blue Daisy) Fuchsia (Trailing Fuchsia) Impatiens (Bizzie Lizzie) Lotus berthelotii (Coral Gem) Pelargonium (Ivy Leaved Geranium) Plectranthus (Swedish Ivy) Viola or Pansy Petunias Trailing

24 To advertise call: 07540 087840 or email [email protected] Time to nominate your Young Citizen of the Year Vice chairman of the organising committee, former Wolves player Mel Eves, said: "The Young Citizen of the Year awards have gone from strength to strength over the years. Last year, we selected ten young people as finalists and invited them with their guests to an awards ceremony, with many others receiving a certificate of commendation for their efforts. “This year, we look forward to seeing plenty more fantastic nominations." There are two age categories for the awards, 13-18 and 19-25. Anyone can nominate candidates, who must live or go to school or work in Wolverhampton. This year’s awards are backed by, Collins Aerospace, the Wolves Foundation, the Express & Star, Wolverhampton City Council, Carvers Building Supplies, the James Beattie Charitable Trust, WCR fm and West Midlands Magazines. Nominations have opened for the 2024 Wolverhampton Young Citizen of the Year awards. The awards, now in their 11th year, recognise the achievements of young people in the city who have gone that extra mile to help others. Previous winners include youngsters who have raised funds for charity, supported other members of their community, and made a difference to the people around them. The awards, which are run by the Rotary clubs of Wolverhampton, were launched in memory of Tom Warren, a former Rotarian and the city's Education Director for a quarter of a century. This year's awards ambassador, Wolves Captain Max Kilman, said: "Young people who use their initiative and show kindness to others deserve to be recognised, so I am very pleased to support the awards." For more details and to make a nomination, visit: wolverhamptonyoungcitizen.org.uk/ Wolves Captain Maximilian Kilman with previous winners Luis Enache, Imane Sbihi, Eva Abley and Mel Eves from the Young Citizen of the Year Committee A ceremony will take place later this year, to reveal the winners of these prestigious awards.

26 To advertise call: 07540 087840 or email [email protected] A retirement rambling on an adventure planned decades ago. After well over 20 years of publishing the Tettenhall Clock and Park I have been in a slow transition to retirement. Lucy my daughter is the active workhorse and business partner for over 10yrs, I have retained contact with a few of our regular contributors and will continue to do so, while Lucy manages the rest beautifully. In the meantime Myself and hubby have been keeping busy in pastimes that interest us. We have a home in Cyprus where the “zoo” keeps us active. Two dogs, 3 cats and 9 chickens including a rooster. We bought this property 15 yrs ago, in the middle of nowhere with a small village nearby and the only place to buy a tape measure was from a shed at the bottom of someone's yard. Now we have a Lidl, 3 petrol stations, banks, chemists, in fact everything a small town has. This is the issue with buying in agricultural areas, eventually the plots are sold and built upon. We could see the sea once and our view of the mountains may well disappear in a year. The upside for us is as we grow older, convenience is nearby. In our desire to keep rural we purchased an acre of land in the mountains, for the purpose of growing fruit, veg and overnight stays. This has proved to be an immense adventure and a lot of hard work. For those of you that have travelled abroad you may have noticed the terraced planting in the mountainous areas, usually olive groves or vineyards, our little acre is split into two parts, one on the mountainside and the other on the plateau at the top. We are fortunate to have 20 mature olive trees that have previously provided us with over 70 litres of olive oil however last years very hot summer and dry autumn resulted in an extremely poor harvest which didn’t justify the effort involved in picking the olives. Ours and many of the olives rely on rainfall so this affected much of the olive production on the island. Water is the main issue in this country, hot temperatures and limited rainfall contribute to the scarcity of water. On the land we purchased there is no water or electricity, taking water up three or four times a week was very tiring and humping many 20 litre containers up and down 6 terraces was no mean feat for a pair of fossils like us. I can honestly say we were just keeping young fruit trees alive. Despite all this we have managed through Autumn and Winter to grow plenty of vegetables and in Summer plenty of tomatoes and peppers, the baby fruit trees are still alive. We need to solve the water problem a story to be continued, and talk about goats! This move and purchase was inspired in part by a wonderful book I read many years ago - Driving over Lemons by Chris Stewart. Lizzie OUR LITTLE HELPERS

Home to ground nesting birds and other rare wildlife, the heathland at Kinver Edge is cared for by the National Trust. Dog owners are being asked to keep their pet on a lead this spring and summer to minimise disturbance to the animals that live and breed in this sensitive habitat. The Willow Warbler, a ground nesting bird that arrives at Kinver Edge in spring, flies more than 8,000 kilometres (5,00 miles) from Africa to the UK. In the autumn, these small birds make the return journey. Along with many other migratory birds, the Willow Warbler makes this epic journey to find food and to breed. The UK’s warm, wet summers and long days provide parents with more insects and time to feed their growing chicks. Birds that make their nests, lay eggs and raise their chicks on the ground, including the Willow Warbler, Tree Pipit and Chiffchaff, are easily disturbed and distressed by dogs roaming off the footpaths. Ewan Chapman, Lead Ranger said: “March to July is breeding season for many species, so it’s really important to keep your dog on a lead at this time. Ground nesting birds might be prevented from settling if they’re disturbed by a dog, or if they’re already nesting they will fly away from their nests, neglecting their eggs or chicks. Willow Warbler National Trust image Nick Upton. Keep dogs on leads to protect wildlife during breeding season I want to say a big thank you to all of the responsible dog walkers who are helping us look after this rare habitat and the special wildlife that live here. Away from the heathland, there are plenty of areas on Kinver Edge where dogs are welcome to explore off lead. The top of the Edge, the woodland and Hillfort are all good areas for dogs to roam and run free.” Dog owners who fail to control their dog around livestock and in areas of sensitive habitats could face a fine or even prosecution. Please remember to clear up after your dog and keep it under control around other people. Cattle graze the heathland on Kinver Edge during the summer months. To keep you and your pet safe and to protect the livestock and wildlife that live here, look out for signs asking you to put your dog on a lead as you enter areas of sensitive habitat.

In February our BUGs team helped clear the pond and within a couple of weeks a pair of Mallards arrived. They don’t appear to have taken up permanent residency, but then who doesn’t like to get away for a short break, and a change of scenery? We have recently taken on what is known as the Housekeeper’s Garden, a raised bed within the Courtyard. It has been planted with mainly evergreens which should produce interest all year and provide a pleasing, permanent addition to the area for visitors to the Cafe and House. In the formal gardens we have been working to keep weeds down and the beds tidy in the Rose Garden, which is a yearlong task, and when our autumn planted Tulips are over in the Dutch Garden and the beds are replanted by the City Council we will be planting the containers around the Courtyard. As you can see our activities within the park are varied, and we would be very happy to have more volunteers to help us. If you do have spare time, wish to work with a friendly group who share the aim of Bantock continuing to be a pleasant and interesting destination for visitors, do please consider joining our BUGs team. They meet twice a month for gardening and once monthly for litterpicking. You can join for either or both activities. No one is expected to carry out all tasks nor turn up for all sessions. Some vital tasks such as weeding and dead-heading are time consuming but relatively easy and very rewarding. Of course without money raised by the Friends of Bantock to pay for plants, materials, and also items for the Park and House we would not be able to do what we do, so money from annual membership is vital. St Oswalds is an old fashioned traditional type of school, where the methods of teaching are considered by many to be out of date by modern methods, but considered by St Oswalds the only true way of teaching young boys from privileged backgrounds how to be prepared for their true destiny, and can see no value in re-organising St Oswalds or bringing its method up to date. The main character in the book and our story teller is Mr. Roy Straightly, the Latin teacher at the school. Roy has been a teacher at St.Oswalds for many years, so when the board of governors decide to bring in a new head teacher Mr. Johnny Harrington, alarm bells began to ring for Roy and memories he would rather forget came flooding back. Roy Straightly was one of the teachers at St Oswalds when Johnny Harrington was a pupil. Johnny was a troublesome, insufferable pupil, who did nothing to hide his contempt for his fellow pupils. When Johnny arrives at the school the new teachers employed with him and some of the older teachers who remember him, are charmed by his wit and seemingly sincere nature, but all Roy can see is the boy he hated has now turned into the man he hates, for all the things he did while a pupil at the school. Johnny was involved in a scandal that rocked St Oswalds, involving a murdered pupil and a gross miscarriage of justice leading to the imprisonment of an innocent teacher. Roy feels he has been given an opportunity to “put the records” straight and does his best to expose Johnny for the person responsible for almost resulting in the closure of St Oswalds. FINCHFIELD READERS’ GROUP BOOK REVIEW Review by Doreen Luck Although not referred to in the book I think this one is a series involving the same school and some of the characters in Different Class. For me there seems to be too many characters with many of them having “nick-names” - moussey, Ziggy, Piggy etc, which I found confusing at times, having to stop and check who was who. The story is typical Joanne Harris, with intrigue and some complicated plots, but for me it seemed too drawn out, particularly the ending, which has a time line that seemed to me difficult to follow. I am sure readers who like Joanne Harris books will like this one
