Spring has finally arrived, and with it the promise of warmer, brighterdays ahead. In this month’s introduction, I would like tosay a very fond farewell to Lizzie, my mum, who is hanging up her hat at Finch Magazinesafter more than 20 wonderful years ofpublishing your much-loved local magazine. She is now retiring to sunnier shores inCyprus, where I’m sure she’ll be embracing aslower pace of life and a well earned rest.Lizzie won’t be disappearing entirely. She’llstill be on hand in an advisory capacity andthe occasional crossword creation, whenshe’s not pottering in her garden, walking thedogs along the beautiful coastline, or gettinglost in a good book on a sun lounger.I’ve had the privilege of working alongsideMum on this magazine for the past 12 years, and I hope to continue producing thischerished publication to the same highstandard she has always set. She has beenthe best teacher I could have asked for, and Iam incredibly grateful for the opportunity tonow call this magazine my own. Thanks Mum.We have plenty to keep you busy in thismonths magazine including anothercompetition for tickets to the ballet courtesyof Friends of the Grand (Page 26). 28Visit us online at www.tettenhallclock.co.uk @Theclock&park @tettenhallclockWhy Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson is a candid, richly writtenmemoir in which the acclaimed novelist revisits her own life with fierce honesty and wit. In thisdeeply personal account, Winterson reflects on her difficult upbringing with a strict, emotionallyfraught adoptive family, her early love of literature as a form of escape, and her journey towardself-understanding and fulfilment. The book explores themes of identity, trauma, love and themeaning of “normalcy,” offering insight into how one woman reclaimed her story and found hervoice through language and experience , all without relying on a tidy ending.I found this a very confusing book and almost impossible to follow any sort of time line.Though I thought some of the actual descriptions of her early life as a part of the ElimPentecostal Church and general life in Accrington were interesting, I would have liked to haveheard more regarding this. We were constantly left wanting.Mrs Winterson as gleaned from Jeanette’s memoir was to my mind utterly devoid of any motherlyinstinct, or even any other ‘normal’ female instinct. Jeanette’s destructiveness and rages obviouslyevolved from her early upbringing. I was surprised that there was no intervention from any of theneighbour's with her being locked out all night and left on the doorstep especially in that era.I thought she (Jeanette) spent far too much time recalling her fall into madness, which may be ofinterest to some, but sadly not to me. I would rather as previously stated liked to have heard moreof her physical life as opposed to her meandering thought processes I also would have probablyenjoyed and found it the more appealing had it been written with a chronological history of herlife. Reading this was altogether a very hard slog and I couldn’t in all honesty recommend it toanyone else.FINCHFIELD READERS GROUPAll of the group agreed with Jan’s review, there was nosympathy felt for Jeanette when trying to find her birthmother, it seems the system makes it unnecessarilydifficult, and at the end there didn’t seem to be anyclosure for either Jeanette or her birth mother when theyfinally did meet. No one in the group felt they would readit again. To become a part of Finchfield Readers group based inFinchfield Library, contact Doreen Luck on:Jan Readings Review - Finchfield Readers Group - January 2026Email: [email protected] from the group:
