What a year its been, I'm not sure its been the greatest year for everyone but whenlife throws difficulties at us, these times make us appreciate the really important things in our lives- the people. As my children get older and my parents get older I am learning this. I try to make the most of my parents, they escaped the UK and now livein sunny Cyprus which is an enviable idea to alot of us and the right decision for them, buttravel as we all know gets more expensive year on year which makes spending time togethertricky, but we all try our best to see as much of each other as we can.My eldest is starting secondary school in September, the application has finally been sent off, and I have many mixed emotions. I'm surethere are plenty of parents out there that canrelate to the way I feel. She is growing into afabulous young lady and this is a transition we will both muddle through, with many bumps inthe road I've been warned (wish me luck). In the meantime I am going to make the most of mylittle monsters, make memories and enjoy theride!Another jam packed Issue this month withgoings on. 18Visit us online at www.tettenhallclock.co.uk @Theclock&park @tettenhallclockFrom November onwards, the first Christmas Rose variees unfold their brilliant white flowers in the garden. Christmas Roses are one of the few plants that delight us with their flowers all winter long, weather condions allowing. They are also welcome honey plants for wild bees. Why is it called a Christmas rose? A medieval legend provided an explanaon for the common name. It tells the story of a shepherdess, Madelon, who cried because she had no gi for the baby Jesus. An angel took pity on her, and when her tears reached the ground, the Christmas Rose miraculously sprouted from the snow. Make of that what you like, but it’s a great story. ‘Black hellebore’ is a reference to the botanical name which includes the word ‘niger’, which means ‘black’.Hellebores are nave to Southern and Central Europe and are found primarily in mountainous areas. However, they can survive in a range of habitats from light woodland shade to open alpine meadows. Hellebores can be planted in garden borders, providing that you prepare the ground beforehand by incorporang leaf mold and well roed compost. This will provide the moisture and root run that Hellebores prefer. Recent plant-breeding has produced a range of colours as you can see in the picture to the right: Helleborus ‘Winter Ballet’.There is another popular hellebore that flowers later, in the spring and has the appropriate name ‘Lenten Rose’ (Helleborus orientalis). Also a member of the buercup family, but with a much wider range of colours including reds, yellows and purples.Eimert de Graaff - Teenhall Gardening Club.End of season 2025As the gardening season draws to a close TGC can reflect on another successful year. We have had some fascinang talks, a great day out at the Malvern Spring Fesval, an excellent Annual Show – a real community event demonstrang all the interest, enthusiasm and joy that gardening brings – all topped off with another fabulous End of Season Social at The Royal Oak, Teenhall Wood with entertainment by the Koswecans Ukulele Band. It doesn’t maer whether your garden is big or small; whether you grow flowers or vegetables - or you just have a few pots on the balcony, Teenhall Gardening Club has something of interest for everyone. Our Trading Hut in Nursery Walk is now closed for the Winter but offers great value for members during the season. We sell everything from compost and plant food to tools and equipment, as well as items by the metre such as neng, ground control, fleece and bubble wrap. Why not have a browse of our stock list and write your shopping list! Go to hps://www.teenhallgardeningclub.org/tradinghut and look out for some bargains when the Hut reopens in March. My favourite seasonal garden plants for December.Christmas Rose or black hellebore (Helleborus nigra)

29To advertise Call: 07540 087840 or email [email protected]. F. Kuang’s Yellowface is a sharp, fast-paced novel that dives deep into the messy world ofpublishing, identity, and ambition. It follows June Hayward, a struggling white writer who’salways lived in the shadow of her friend Athena Liu—a brilliant, bestselling Asian-Americanauthor. When Athena dies suddenly in a freak accident, June steals her unfinished manuscript, edits it a bit, and publishes it as her own under a vaguely Asian-sounding name. Overnight, shebecomes a literary star. But fame comes at a price. As the book takes off, people start asking questions aboutauthenticity, race, and who gets to tell certain stories. Online outrage grows, and Junescrambles to justify her actions, convincing herself she’s just continuing Athena’s legacy.Through June’s unreliable narration, Kuang shows how easy it is for self-deception andentitlement to take over when success is on the line. The title Yellowface points to the old racist practice of white actors pretending to be Asian—butKuang gives it a modern twist, exposing how cultural appropriation still happens today, just insubtler, “publishable” forms. Beneath the satire, the book asks hard questions: Is “diversity” inpublishing truly meaningful, or just another marketing tool? How much of a writer’s identityshould shape the stories they can tell?Darkly funny, uncomfortable, and unputdownable, Yellowface is both a page-turner and amirror held up to our social-media-obsessed, performative culture—where everyone wants tobe seen, and few want to be called out.BOOK REVIEWR. F. Kuang’s Yellowface is one of those books thatgrabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. It’ssharp, funny in the darkest way, and honestly kind ofuncomfortable but that’s exactly what makes it sogood. The story dives into the messy world ofpublishing, tackling questions about who gets to tellcertain stories and how far people will go for success. The narrator is unreliable and a little unhinged, whichmakes the whole ride both fascinating and infuriating. Icouldn’t stop turning the pages, even when I wanted toyell at the character. It’s a mix of satire, drama, andsocial critique that feels fresh, bold, and hard to putdown.
