TIMELESS TANZANIA PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI
GUIDED BY PAUL TICKNER WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER
Reis Voyage and Paul Tickner Safaris
Living in Tanzania Justine’s experience in the northern wildlife areas has allowed her
to design and create itineraries for the discerning traveller. An avid photographer
herself Justine believes in responsible tourism and spending more time in the
destination. To experience a variety of wildlife and cultural activities, giving back to
the areas we are trying to conserve. After visiting Ruaha in April 2015 it was great to
discover the parks fascinating wildlife and hidden secrets. Justine also travelled
extensively throughout East and Southern Africa on overland adventures before
settling in Arusha. Realising her passion and knowledge were invaluable she decided
in 2014 that it was time to share this with her clients.

“Paul Tickner is a conservationist, photographer and professional guide based in Iringa
and Ruaha national park, Tanzania. Paul operates and leads private safaris in Ruaha and
southern Tanzania. Paul believes that responsible tourism can help to solve many of the
problems in wildlife conservation today and his safaris have a strong commitment to
this; visiting wild places, using good eco-practice and getting out of the car. Whilst
being involved in a number of other projects, Paul also likes to take photos of the
spectacular wildlife found in the area. Growing up in the UK & Kenya, Paul studied
International Development before living in New Zealand for a year. Realising a
childhood ambition, Paul then trained as a guide in South Africa, going on to work in
the Kruger National Park. Studying for an MSc in Conservation Management in
Scotland led him back to Tanzania.”
Justine and Paul have combined their knowledge and experience of these iconic destinations to bring you the very best of
Tanzania. Whether you are an avid birder, wish to capture the charisma of an elephant or you are seeking that perfect
landscape shot, this safari will be tailored to your every need. In addition Justine and Paul have ensured a wonderfully
relaxing conclusion to your trip on the magical Mafia Island.
We hope that you immerse yourself in the adventure of Tanzania and enjoy the amazing experiences this unique country
has to offer.

DAY 2&3: THE AREA
=========================================================================
NGORONGORO HIGHLANDS
The Ngorongoro Conservation Authority area is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, it adjoins the Serengeti National Park, merging
into the Southern Plains. The south and west of the area are volcanic highlands including Lake Natron, the active volcano Ol Donyo
Lengai and the lesser known Empakai Crater; the southern and eastern boundaries are defined by the rim of the East African Rift wall.
It is most famous for the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most well known wildlife areas in the world.
The Crater itself is the world's largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera, formed when it exploded and collapsed in on itself some two to
three million years ago. The floor of the Crater covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi) and is mostly covered by grasslands with two small wooded
areas and a seasonal salt lake in the centre of the crater; the lake is known by two names, Lake Magadi or Lake Makat. The other major
water source is the Ngoitokitok, near the eastern crater wall.
The steep decent down into the crater floor brings a
sense of excitement and the cooler air changes
considerably as we reach the grassy plains below. A
packed lunch will be provided for the trip to allow us
to take in all the wildlife viewing and photography
shots we can muster.

=========================================================================
LAMAI SERENGETI / 4 NT (BLD) OR SIMILAR
Lamai Serengeti sits tucked amongst the rocks of the iconic Kogakuria Kopje in the northern Serengeti. There are panoramic views of the
surrounding landscape and it's just a few miles from where the wildebeest cross the Mara River. For roughly a quarter of the year,
between late July and October, this is where you'll find the migration, right on your doorstep. Each of the 12 rooms fit into the complex
geometry of the kopje and its views, natural space and light. These are split between two entirely separate lodges, the Main Lodge of
eight rooms and the smaller Private Lodge of four rooms. All the rooms have their own spacious verandas and en-suite bathrooms. Each
lodge has a separate bar and dining area, with adjoining library and map room and a natural rock swimming pool.
Throughout the year, Lamai use 4WD vehicles to explore the intricacies of the area, both south of the Mara River and (river levels
permitting) to the north, and walking safaris are offered from the lodges. With a location like this, one of the best ways to take in the
Serengeti is literally from the expansive verandah of your room, tucked away in amongst the red rocks of the kopje. The rooms are
designed not only to maximise the panoramic views, but also to give a window onto life on the kopje, which you can watch unobserved.
In short, at Lamai, you can be as busy as you like with game drives and walks, or as lazy as you like enjoying the Serengeti from your
room or the swimming pool.

DAY 4-7: THE AREA
=========================================================================
SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK - NORTHERN
The Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous wildlife areas in the world and home to the annual wildebeest migration. It covers
14,750 km2 of grassland plains, open savannah, riverine forests and woodlands. It lies in the north of Tanzania, bordered by Kenya and
the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Ngorongoro Crater Area to the southeast, the Maswa Game Reserve to the south west and the
Loliondo Private Concession area to the east. Together, all these areas form the larger Serengeti ecosystem.
This northern Serengeti area of lush, rolling grassland and tree-lined watercourses is the hub around which the Serengeti migration
circulates. During the dry season, the herds mass on both banks of the Mara River, frequently crossing - and braving the crocs - in
response to local weather patterns that only they seem to understand.
Unlike the southern plains of the Serengeti that dry out, forcing all but the hardiest of species to leave, this area remains lush and green.
There's a collective sigh of relief from the resident game when the one and a half million migrating wildebeest - and the madness that
follows them - leave town for a few months. And the resident game in the area is spectacular. Plains game in the form of zebra, topi,
gazelles, impala, buffalo and giraffe all frequent the area throughout the year. Lion are rarely far away and leopard, ever present, but
always elusive, stalk the rocky kopjes and river lines.
The days and nights spent in the Serengeti are a photographer’s paradise, here you will be able to spend hours upon hours taking in
some of natures most phenomenal wildlife.

MWAGUSI SAFARI CAMP/ 3 NT OR SIMILAR (BLD)
This morning we say our goodbyes to Lamai Serengeti, some of you may continue with Paul
onto Ruaha or make your way to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight home.
On arrival in Ruaha you will be greeted by the friendly smile of Mwagusi’s camp guide, enjoy a
leisurely game drive en-route to camp. Mwagusi was established in 1987 from one family’s love
for all things wildlife.
The camps rustic style and location make for some of the best wildlife viewing in Tanzania. The
camp is made up of thatched tented “bandas “ that are built from natural materials allowing it to
blend into its surroundings. Freshly made pastries are infamous at a Mwagusi breakfast and a
very tasty way to start the day. Early morning and late afternoon game viewing is spectacular
from the modified open sided 4WD vehicles. Each vehicle includes guide books and bean bags
for our avid photographers. Guided walks are available and offer a great way to get totally back
to nature and learn more about the African bush.
Enjoy full days of wildlife viewing taking in rugged and remote landscapes that make a
spectacular photographic backdrop.

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK - SOUTHERN TANZANIA
The largest national park in southern Tanzania, this untrammeled and wild ecosystem offers a unique
game viewing experience. You will be spoilt by dramatic landscapes, remote wilderness and abundant
wildlife; Ruaha has so much to offer.
You will not encounter the crowds of northern Tanzania; in fact you may be lucky enough to enjoy
magnificent sightings in complete isolation. Ruaha is part of the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem, an area
covering 45,000km square. Ruaha is famous for a high density of elephants, numerous and healthy
carnivore populations including lions and the elusive and endangered wild dog. Ruaha is also one of the
few places you may encounter both the lesser and greater kudu species.
The distinctive baobab, or “upside down”, tree is prominently found in Ruaha, you may be fortunate
enough to spot a leopard amongst its gnarled branches.. Fascinating and stunning sunsets, magical light
and red ochre earth, compliment the long golden grass.
The birders amongst you will find Ruaha National Park a haven that holds more than 600 species.
During our stay we will visit Wildlife Connection a NGO project aiding in human and elephant conflict.
See how the local communities are working together to protect these magnificent creatures.

CHOLE MJINI / 3 NT OR SIMILAR (BD)
This morning we prepare to leave Ruaha and make our way to the airstrip for our onward flight to Mafia Island.
The flight to Mafia is via Dar es Salaam so we have a brief stop and change of plane before arriving on the beautiful Mafia Island.
Juani Island, full of history and a bygone era, is located a short boat ride from Mafia. Situated in the historic ruins of Kua, a settlement
built by Shirazi Traders in the 13th Century, is Chole Mjini the island’s only eco lodge.
The seven Chole tree-houses are stunning with their intimacy and ocean views. A canopy of ancient baobabs is home to two of the tree-
houses with the biggest of all room “Mbili”, meaning two in Kiswahili.
Chole Mjini's approach to eco responsible tourism is impressive, and is definitely suited to people looking for a rustic adventure. Getting
back to nature where days are spent exploring the local village, visiting one of the community projects, exploring the ruins, diving,
snorkelling, swimming with the whale sharks or simply relaxing.

DAY 11-13: THE AREA
=========================================================================
MAFIA ISLAND - SOUTHERN TANZANIA
Just off the coastline of southern Tanzania, is the Mafia Archipelago. A marine haven, opposite the mouth of the nutrient filled Rufiji river
delta. The islands of Mafia and Chole are known for their remoteness. During German occupation during the 1890’s, the island's
reputation was a safe port for all ships. The ancient ruins of Kua dating back to the eleventh century stand next to the tree lodge of Chole
Mjini.
In 1995 the Mafia Island marine park was formed to protect coral reefs and to prevent overfishing in the area. The Rufiji river delta and
Mafia channel form one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world, an area expanding up to 1500km squared. Of the seven
species of sea turtle found worldwide five of these are found off the coast of Tanzania, with many nesting on Mafia. You may be lucky
enough to observe turtles hatching on the beach in August and September. In addition, August is the best season for whale watching to
view migrating Humpback whales. Mafia is also famous for its whale sharks; the Whale Shark Conservation Society aims to bring more
awareness in order to conserve this fascinating animal.
