MEMBERS’ CODE OF CONDUCT
The Members’ Code of Conduct has been prepared to ensure that all
cricket and social activities at Radlett Cricket Club are conducted fairly,
sensibly and enjoyably. It is expected that anyone connected with Radlett
CC - member, parent, player or spectator - will adhere to these guidelines.
• At all times act in a manner consistent with the spirit of the game and
the reputation of Radlett CC
• Adhere to the RCC Players’ Code of Conduct
• Treat others as you would expect to be treated yourself
• Respect fellow members, staff, officials, opposition and guests
• Respect decisions made by the officials - without them there would be
no game
• Look after Club equipment as if it were your own.
MATCH DAYS
Arrival
• All players shall arrive for the game in a fit state and be ready to warm-
up at the designated time on the teamsheet, as determined by each
team captain
Dress Code
• All players shall comply with the team uniform as agreed by the
individual team captains
Before Game
• Captain to introduce him/herself to the Umpires, ensure they are made
to feel welcome and conditions of play are understood
• Captain to introduce himself to opposition Captain
During Game
• Players shall at all times act in a manner consistent with the ECB/Radlett
CC Code of Conduct
• At no stage will any player show dissent to the Umpires
• Players are responsible for their own discipline but Captains must
accept responsibility for managing the tone on the field of play
• Should an incident occur, the Captain will clarify the situation with the
Umpires immediately or at the next interval
6
After Game
• All players will thank the opposition and Umpires after the game, by
shaking hands
• The Captain will discuss RCC discipline with the Umpires after every game
• The Captain and or designated player will ensure the Umpires are
entertained after the game
• During home games all players will make an effort to entertain the
opposition
DISCIPLINARY PROCESS
• The disciplinary committee shall consist of the Head of Cricket or his
nominated deputy, an elected member of the playing membership, and
a senior non-playing member, preferably a Vice-President or a Hon. Life
Member.
• Any player reported, cited by the Umpires, or cited by the team Captain
for breach of the ECB Code of Conduct or the Radlett CC Players’ Code of
Conduct will be requested to appear before the Disciplinary Committee
within 7 days of being reported or cited.
• If a breach of the Code is accepted or proven, then the Disciplinary
Committee shall have the right to impose penalties in line with, or in
excess of, League guidelines.
• Appeal procedures will follow those laid down in the ECB Code of Conduct.
• Breaches of the Members’ Code of Conduct will be dealt with through
the Club’s normal disciplinary process.
PLAYERS’ CODE OF CONDUCT
At Radlett, we will follow the ECB Code of Conduct and Spirit of Cricket
Regulations covering players’ code of conduct, both on and off the field.
Specifically, any Radlett CC player or official will:
• Conduct themselves fairly and properly, on and off the field of play
• NOT engage in verbal or physical abuse or hostility to other players or
member of the public
• NOT dispute decisions nor react provocatively towards Umpires at any
time
• NOT engage in crude, abusive and personal ”sledging” of other players
or officials, nor make abusive hand signals
• NOT engage in excessive or intimidatory appealing.
• Respect and welcome all players and guests to Radlett CC.
Full copies of ECB and Herts League policies are available if required.
7
SELECTION GUIDELINES
It is recognised that team selection is often an emotive subject, which often
requires difficult decisions. These guidelines aim to make the selection process
more transparent, by outlining the key principles the Selection Committee
consider when discussing selection.
Selection takes place weekly throughout the season, usually after club training.
The Selection Committee is made up of Team Captains – or their nominated
deputy - and is chaired by the Head of Cricket or his nominated deputy. Selection
shall only be attended by the Selection Committee, except where the Head of
Cricket feels it appropriate to include other officials of the club (eg. Head Coach).
Should any club member wish to discuss any aspects of selection, they should
contact the Head of Cricket in writing (e-mail is fine), who will then meet the
player ahead of the next planned selection meeting together with the player’s
usual captain and any other members of the Selection Committee deemed
appropriate.
Objectives of Selection
• Ensure that RCC adheres to League rules by always fielding our strongest
sides i.e. 1st, then 2nds etc.
• For the Club to have regard to its future success by promoting and
developing youth.
• To be fair and consistent in the treatment of players.
It must be recognised that sometimes these objectives are not compatible with
each other.
Factors in the Selection Process
• Ability - A player’s ability is the most important factor in determining the
team for which s/he is selected. No one benefits by a player playing in an
XI in which s/he is either too good or simply not able to contribute to the
side.
• Form and performance - It is important to note that form and
performance encompasses a player’s performance over a period of
matches and not just a single performance. Also, the Selection
Committee is entitled to consider the quality of opposition in assessing a
player’s performance.
• Training - A player’s attendance at, and attitude during, training are
factors to consider in selection. However, it must be recognised that the
club is not professional and if a player cannot train due to work or family
commitments this may not affect selection.
• Future development/potential - Consideration will be given to promoting
younger players who have the potential to play in higher teams. This
doesn’t mean, however, that older players will automatically make way
for younger players regardless of performance.
8
• Initial reason for promotion - If a player is promoted due to a series
of good performances, s/he should be given more of an opportunity in
the team than a player who has been promoted to a team on the basis of
unavailability.
• Team balance - A captain is entitled to have a balanced team, both in
relation to the spread of batsmen and bowlers in his team, as well as the
type of batsmen and bowlers in the team.
• Absence - If a player is unavailable to play due to absence, this
will be a factor counting against the player in determining where s/he
is selected upon their return. The reason for the absence may, however, be
a relevant consideration (eg. an absence due to work or family
commitments will be treated more favourably than an absence due to a
holiday).
• Team Captain - The team captain will have a strong say in the selection of
the team taking into account the proposed tactics for the upcoming
game and any impact on team morale.
• Subscriptions - The club reserves the right to preferentially select
players who have paid their subs by the due date.
• It is expected that a member who has declared that he is available will
automatically agree to play as selected, otherwise future selection may
be affected.
Communication of Selection
Players who have been selected will receive an email, generated from the Club
website, on the Tuesday evening or the Wednesday morning, requesting them
to confirm availability.
Where a player has been promoted or demoted after a long period in a particular
team, that player is entitled to be individually notified of that fact and the
reason for that decision. The communication of a player’s promotion should be
conveyed to the player by the captain of the team into which the player has been
promoted. The communication of a player’s demotion should be conveyed to
the player by the captain of the team from which the player has been demoted.
Captains should make every effort to speak with the player prior to the sending
out of the selection emails.
In the event that the appropriate captain cannot communicate the message, the
message should be conveyed by the Head of Cricket.
Finally, it is worth noting that players must be aware that their selection for a
particular team depends upon, and is frequently governed by, the availability of
other players. For example, a player may appear to be ‘dropped’ after a good
performance if a similar player previously from a higher team becomes available.
Availability is not within the control of the Selection Committee and it can only
work with what is available.
9
EQUITY POLICY STATEMENT
The Club is committed to ensuring that equity is incorporated across all
aspects of its development. In doing so, it acknowledges and adopts the
following Sport England definition of sports equity.
Sports equity is about fairness in sport, equality of access, recognising
inequalities and taking steps to address them. It is about changing the
culture and structure of sport to ensure it becomes equally accessible to
everyone in society.
The Club respects the rights, dignity and worth of every person and will treat
everyone equally within the context of their sport, regardless of age, ability,
gender, race, ethnicity, religious belief, sexuality or social / economic status.
The Club is committed to everyone having the right to enjoy their sport in
an environment free from threat of intimidation, harassment and abuse.
All Club members have a responsibility to oppose discriminatory behaviour
and promote equality of opportunity.
The Club will deal with any incidence of discriminatory behaviour seriously,
according to Club disciplinary procedures.
