Target on Tyrrell

Tyrrell Middle School Receives Leadership Award
from Connecticut Association of Schools

Connecticut Association of Schools recently announced that Tyrrell Middle School
is the recipient of the 2020 Arthur Director Leadership Award. This award is

presented annually to a middle school that demonstrates superior application of
initiatives and programs that support a climate of acceptance for all students.

Tyrrell was chosen for its “Sweets & A Smile” program, a coffee cart and breakfast
program run by the Life Skills students in conjunction with peer mentors.
Each Friday, teachers can order coffee, tea, or cocoa and a breakfast item.
Students and peer mentors work together to fill orders and serve customers
while simultaneously building life skills and friendships.

During the week of December 7-11, 2020 Tyrrell students
participated in Hour of Code. Hour of Code takes place every

year during Computer Science Education Week. This year,
Tyrrell students joined other students throughout the country

completing activities called CodeBytes, brief (20 minute)
coding activities that were live-streamed every day.

If you would like to learn more about Hour of Code visit

Chesprocott Health
District Offers Free

Radon Test Kits
January 2021

The month of January has
been designated as “Radon
Awareness Month” by the
United States Environmental
Protection Agency and the
Connecticut Department of Public Health. Radon
is a naturally occurring gas that can have a big
impact on indoor air quality and your health. Radon
is a serious health risk facing tens of thousands
of Americans.

According to Chesprocott Health District’s Health
Director, Maura Esposito, “We can’t see, smell, or
taste it, so it’s easy to forget that radon may be a
problem in any home, school, or building. The only
way to know if you have radon is to test for it.”

Exposure to radon gas causes more than 20,000
deaths annually and it is the number one cause of
lung cancer among non-smokers.

Chesprocott will offer free radon testing kits to
Cheshire, Prospect and Wolcott residents on a first
come, first serve basis. Residents may visit our
office at 1247 Highland Avenue in Cheshire to pick
up their kit starting January 19th, 2021. To ensure
residents place their kits and return them in a timely
manner, we ask that $20 be left when the kit is
picked up. Once the resident returns the completed
test kit to our office, the $20 will be returned to the
owner. Quantities limited. No reservations.

This initiative is a great opportunity to increase
your own awareness of radon and the risk
associated with it. Mitigation information will be
provided to those who test with high levels.
To sign-up for a free radon testing appointment
please call 203-272-2761. This initiative is paid
through a grant from the Connecticut Department
of Public Health.

The Exchange Club of Wolcott held their annual One Nation Under God service on the
Wolcott Town Green this year. Dignitaries, civic organization members and private citizens
attended this years’ service and enjoyed some hot coffee and bagel cream cheese
sandwiches after the service.

Boy Scout Troop 230 held a food drive collection just before Thanksgiving on the Wolcott
Town Green. They collected 1,800 lbs. of food, $3,725 in cash and 163 coats for the
homeless shelter. They have been doing this food drive for several years now and every
year gets better than the year before. Great community service scouts!

The Park and Recreation division of the
Public Works Dept. were busy decorating
the Town Green Christmas tree in the early
part of November. A bucket truck was utilized
to string the Christmas lights on the tree.
Note the strands of lights on the ground
leading to the tree. There was not a single
knot or broken bulb among them!

in Toothpaste

A key ingredient in toothpaste is fluoride. Fluoride has
broad benefits for people, both young and old. Fluoride
toothpaste is not just for kids — it is beneficial for us our
whole lives. Fluoride in toothpaste heals and remineralizes
microscopic cavities as they form, it hardens the tooth sur-
face, making it more resistant to the acid attack of bacteria,
and slows down the action of these acid-producing bac-
teria.

Karate Academy Raises Funds to Reopen

Upon his passing, the studio’s instructors and students
continued their martial arts training at a sister studio in
Wolcott. But the studio doors remained closed.

Anthony Bracco, student of Beaudoin’s for 20 years, is
one of them. Now a third-degree black belt, Bracco’s
family is one of a handful of two-generation and three-
generation families that have passed through AOK.

Bracco is dedicated to reopening the studio as a local
business owner’s passion project. He will run a 60-day
Kickstarter campaign from December 1 to January 30 to
raise funds for the reopening with a projected opening for
late spring 2021. The studio will be remodeled and
refreshed to prepare for a new generation of students. The
goal is to raise $75,000 to help with the project while the
rest will be funded privately.
