There are several levels to the Structure of the Grange Family. For a complete history please visit ctstategrange.org. Below is a brief description of each level: Junior Grange: Children ages 5 through 14 conduct their own meetings, have their own ritualistic work and through this experience they learn leadership, initiative and good citizenship skills. The Junior Grange programs are created to develop and hone individual talents, build self-confidence, increase participation in Grange activities and provide leadership training. Subordinate Grange: The Community Grange as this unit of the organization is built around the community. Men, women and youth are admitted on equal terms. The local Grange elects its own officers and controls its own affairs in community matters. Pomona Grange: County-wide/Regional Grange. Subordinate Granges within a given district are grouped together on a county or regional basis into Pomona Granges that meet monthly or quarterly. State Grange: Delegate body representing Subordinate and Pomona Granges. At their annual conventions, State Granges consider many important matters relating to legislation and public policy. National Grange: Parent branch of the Order. All business sessions of the National Grange are open to any Community Grange member in good standing. Delegates from each State (the State Grange President and Spouse) comprise the voting body. At the annual convention of the National Grange, one day is devoted to the conferral of the Seventh Degree, the highest degree of Order. 203-879-5625 6 Months Free Monitoring for New Accounts 6 Months Free Monitoring for New Accounts 30 Potuccos Ring Rd., Wolcott, CT otuccos Ring Rd., Wolcott, CT CT Lic. # C5-0193351. 203-879-5625 ic. # C5-0193351. 203-879-5625 Enrollment Summer Camp R Open to the public - m Pick your days - full June 24 Thro S Register in our online store For Ages 3-8 Starts March 24! nrollment membership not required l weeks not required! ugh August 23 E ϲϬ ^ĂŶĚďĂŶŬ ZŽĂĚ ŚĞƐŚŝƌĞ ϮϬϯ ϮϳϮ ϰϯϴϲ After Care 3pm-5:30 Before Care 7:30-9am Half Day PM 12pm-3pm Half Day AM 9am-12pm Full day 9am-3pm ϯ ǁǁǁ͘ǁŚŝƉƉĞƌƐŶĂƉƉĞƌƐƉůĂLJŐLJŵ͘ĐŽŵ ϯϲϬ ^ĂŶĚďĂŶŬ ZŽĂĚ͕ ŚĞƐŚŝƌĞ ϮϬϯ-ϮϳϮ-ϰϯϴϲ Complementary Alternative Medicine NEW MEDICAL PRACTICE Specializing in health, wellness and treatment of chronic diseases IV Nutritional therapy featuring Liquivida® pharmaceuticals integrated with conventional/ nutriceutical medicine Spectrum Plaza 246 Wolcott Road, Wolcott CT 203-879-5504 DR. Due to inclement weather, it was held at the Wolcott Congregational Church. The rain and ice may have kept some away but the children who attended enjoyed the day. All the children were given bags of candy and a raffle ticket. While waiting for the raffle, the children were able to meet the Easter Bunny and have pictures taken. There were bikes, filled Easter baskets, and stuffed animals for raffles prizes. The donations of candy and bikes were greatly appreciated and made the day a success. Thank you to Chief Stevens and the Wolcott Police Union, Wolcott Lions Club, Farmingbury Women’s Club, and The Junior Women’s Club for their donations. Thank you also to Mayor Dunn, Chief Stevens, Sargeant Reichard, Little Mr. Wolcott, the Wolcott High School volunteers, and of course the Easter Bunny for attending this event. Navigating Dental Billing Issues: A Quick Guide Dealing with billing problems at a dental office can be frustrating, but it's essential to address them promptly. Just like tooth trouble, small issues are better attended to than waiting for them to morph into large issues. Here are two steps to help you resolve billing issues effectively. 1. Understand Your Bill Before stressing, take a deep breath and carefully review your dental bill. You can look for discrepancies, such as incorrect charges, duplicate entries, or services you didn't receive. It is helpful if you understand each line item. 2. Communicate with the Dental Office Call the Office. Reach out to the dental office's billing department. Ask for clarification on any confusing charges. Oftentimes any issues are resolved with easy and straightforward communication. If necessary, you can request an itemized bill. If you haven’t received one already, feel free to ask for an itemized bill that breaks down each service provided. You can go over these items with the billing department. This can help you pinpoint any areas of confusion. If necessary, the dental care provider can help clarify as well. 99% Of any financial confusion can be sorted out with just following these steps. Mistakes can happen, and with each party communicating respectfully, those mistakes are easily fixed. Remember that billing errors happen and most dental offices want to maintain good relationships with their patients. On the flip side, patients can forget details of a visit, or even an entire visit. Stay calm, communicate effectively, and advocate for yourself. By following these steps, you'll be better equipped to handle dental billing issues efficiently. Waves for Wishes 2024 Make-A-Wish traces its inspiration to Christopher James Greicius, an energetic 7-year-old boy battling leukemia who wishes to be a police officer. In 1980, his Phoenix community came together to make his wish come true. Little did Chris know that his wish would create a movement that would transform millions of lives. Today, Make-A-Wish has granted hundreds of thousands of lifechanging wishes to children battling critical illnesses. Wishes that give families hope through dark times, strength to persevere and experiences that forever change their lives. Thank you to his mother, Linda Pauling, the Greicius family and the founders for their tireless dedication to our mission. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in the United States that helps fulfill the wishes of children with a critical illness between the ages of 2.5 and 18 years old. Make-A-Wish grants thousands of unique wishes each year. A wish begins with hope. And hope begins with you. Wishes are more than just a nice thing and they are far more than gifts or singular events in time. 9 out of 10 parents shared that their child’s emotional wellbeing improved through receiving a wish. Wishes impact everyone involved — wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals, and communities. For wish kids, a wish gives them the strength to fight. Parents might finally feel optimistic. And still others may see all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy. Our family’s goal is to raise awareness and support of Make-A-Wish CT within our community. With your support we can make wishes happen. It's truly amazing what wishes can do. A wish renews hope, uplifts spirits and encourages the belief in the impossible. There are currently 350 critically ill children in CT awaiting for their wishes to be granted. Make-A-Wish® Connecticut "Together we create life changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.” Wolcott Teacher Needs Your Vote! Legislative Democrats are pulling out all the stops to keep you distracted from their failed policies that continue to generate inflation and make our state less and less affordable, undermine the rule of law, and make us question the integrity of our elections. Their weapon of choice? An odd combination of their trusty standby: abortion rights, and something new and remarkably contradictory—transgender rights. Despite the nonsensical juxtaposition of these issues and the extreme implausibility of what they would have voters believe, elected Democrats insist on pushing a contrived sense of jeopardy to sow confusion and division. One example is their obscure resolution, S.J.4, which aims to rewrite our state's age-old constitution by redefining “sex” and “gender”, allegedly in the interest of equal rights. But here's the catch: we already have laws that protect us from discrimination. This resolution does nothing but further a progressive political agenda by tossing identity markers into the mix. This misuse of the equal protection provision sets the stage for confusion and opens the door for abuse. Abortion: The Democrat ‘Go-to’ Issue When Democrats recognize they are vulnerable because of their poor performance while in power, they instinctively pivot to abortion, attempting to convince the public that the “radical CT GOP” will instantly abolish all abortions and deny women’s rights, even to contraception. Connecticut residents deserve to understand the disingenuous nature of the debate. Finding balance between individual civil rights and the state’s duty to protect life is difficult. The diverse spectrum of beliefs about when life begins complicates the issue. I am one of the extreme minority even with the GOP that identifies as pro-life, but my position mirrors the vast majority of Connecticut residents. I advocate for sensible policies like parental notification—a measure Connecticut lacks but needs to catch abusers—and ending late-term abortions, which most people already oppose. S.J.4 reveals an extreme stance that doesn't reflect Connecticut's views. By linking abortion protections to broad anti-discrimination laws, S.J.4 effectively blocks regulations against abortion up until birth. This radical position fails to address critical aspects such as child viability and maternal health, demonstrating a disconnect with the majority's beliefs. Should ‘Women’s Rights’ Take a Backseat? Despite its supposed focus on abortion protections, S.J.4’s language shockingly undermines the rights of biological women. By adding ambiguous concepts like “gender identity and expression” to the constitution, it prioritizes those who identify as women over biological females. This raises questions about the rights of women in private spaces and sports, where concerns about fairness and safety are valid. During the hearing, a passionate advocate raised a critical point: confusing the language of women is stripping their identity. I will continue to stand for the rights of biological women, particularly when it comes to protecting their identity, their right to privacy, and in women’s sports. Free Speech — Unless It’s Dissenting It's crucial to protect every individual's right to believe and live as they choose. However, the resolution's argument that transgender women are women contradicts objective and scientific facts. This resolution poses a danger to those of us who do not see the world this way. The language would open the door to compelled speech, where those who have opposing views could potentially be silenced or even penalized for failing to use certain pronouns and other terms. That is unacceptable in my view. I will continue to defend the right of individuals to their own expression but not at the expense of the rights of others. ‘Related Healthcare’: What does that even mean? The resolution’s language also connects “protections” based on sex and gender to “related health care”, hinting at an agenda. This phrasing could open the door for radical ideas, such as gender-affirming care for minors, which should be approached with caution and concern for the well-being of all individuals, especially children. Freedom for all! As an elected lawmaker, I’ve prioritized freedom and ensuring government doesn't hinder anyone's pursuit of happiness. However, this pursuit ends when it infringes on others’ rights. S.J.4 Pushes a divisive agenda, forcing the adoption of specific ideologies and pitting competing rights against one another. This creates an imbalance and further fractures our society. As we move forward, let’s strive for genuine freedom that respects all individuals without compromising their beliefs or well-being. It is time to focus on the real issues at hand. We deserve better than political posturing. We deserve honest action on the issues that profoundly affect us all. I will continue to advocate for policies that will improve the affordability of our state, restore law and order, and rebuild Connecticut. As always, you can find me at senatorsampson.com as well as social media at sampsonforct. CT Dems’ Election Year Distraction Bill S.J.4

It is the second time in as many years that voters have been asked to change the state's Constitution, which requires approval by voters. Though voters are asked to approve a question, such as supporting early voting or no excuse absentee voting, the people who ultimately decide the details of the amendment are the majority Democrat LEGISLATORS who vote on the amendments, not the voters. How is that a transparent process for the public? Voters do not know what they are actually approving when they say yes to a question posed to them on the ballot, which means the change to the constitution may be drastically different than what they thought it would be. For instance, voters approved a measure to allow for early voting, but it was the legislature that determined that the length of voting would be 14 days. Early voting has now become an unfunded mandate for our towns that has increased costs, which voters could not have envisioned when they said yes to the measure. And the frequency of attempted changes continues to increase. This legislative session, majority Democrats are proposing three changes the constitution, two of which are aimed at advancing political agendas. For instance, SJ 193, a vaguely worded resolution, cites the environment as a need to amend the state's constitution, but what it really does is opens the door for anyone to file a lawsuit against the state if they feel they have been wronged due to “environmental” issues. What it would actually do, is encourage people to take advantage of the court system, the potentially enormous costs of which would, in some way, shape or form, be passed on to taxpayers. Another proposed constitutional amendment would allow 16- and 17-year-old citizens to apply for admission as electors (i.e., voters), with those privileges becoming valid at age 18 if the person applies for admission in accordance with state law and is otherwise qualified. Yet another amendment, this session would enshrine abortion into our state’s constitution and would allow for the termination of a baby up to nine months. First, I will NEVER support a bill that allows the abortion of a baby up to birth, as some Democrats seem to want. Second, changing the constitution is unnecessary because women have unrestricted access to get an abortion in Connecticut and are free to seek whatever reproductive care they need. During two recent press conferences, Democrats have described this issue with fearmongering language such as ‘crisis’, ‘peril’, and ‘extreme right-wing attacks’, yet in nearly the same breath, they also admit that protections for abortions are already established in Connecticut statute. Do not forget, it is an election year, which makes you wonder, are these attempts to change the constitution really necessary, or are they simply fear tactics that are part of a campaign strategy? Just like the U.S. Constitution, the state’s Constitution serves as the bedrock for our democracy; it should not be tinkered with or casually changed to support a one-sided agenda or someone's political aspirations. Wolcott Community News Memorial Day — Remember & Honor 14 www.WolcottCommunityNews.com May 2024 Wolcott Education Foundation The Directors would like to thank Flo Goodman for her donation to our organization in memory of Fran Masi. He was a science teacher at the middle school for many years and upon his retirement he served on the Town Council. This donation will go into our Retired Teachers’ Memorial. Our 2024 scholarship winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony at Wolcott High School later this month. Friends of the Wolcott Public Library Our dedicated members have been very busy this month preparing for our Spring Book Sale, Countless hours go into sorting the many categories we have in the fiction, non-fiction and children’s sections. We even have an expert in our fiction department who will make recommendations. If you like a certain author and you have exhausted all the titles, Karen will come up with other suggestions for you. Many of our workers are well read and can direct you in making the right choices in your materials. Upon completion of our sale, we will donate books to the Alcott Free Library, Children’s Community School and Waterbury Reads. Puzzles will go to Veteran’s Homes. If you weren’t able to make our sale but you would still like to help the Friends, you can do so by designating us as your charity of choice with any of your bank accounts at TD Bank. The Wolcott Branch is conveniently located next to Pat’s IGA. Speak with Katie or Josh about having your accounts coded. At the end of the year, the Friends will receive a $10 donation from TD Bank for every active, existing account and a whopping $50 for each new account that is opened. For our first year involved with their Affinity program, the Friends received a check for approximately $1,400. So every account helps us help the library. It take a tremendous amount of books to be sold to reach that amount so please consider joining this worthwhile program. Two of our Museum passes are up for renewal and will probably be discontinued unless their usage picks up. The White Memorial Nature Center grounds are open year round but the museum and gift shop are open Tuesday through Saturdays 9 am to 5 pm. On Sundays the hours are noon to 5 pm. Our pass allows free admission for 2 adults and up to 4 children. If you are a nature lover, this is the place for you in Litchfield. The New England Air Museum, located in Windsor Locks, offers a 50% discount for up to 5 people on our pass. They are open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm. Right now some of their exhibits include New England Women in Aviation, Apollo and Beyond – a Connecticut Company’s Contribution to Space Flights, Pratt and Whitney Innovations, and over 100 aircraft from the earliest flying machines to supersonic jets. If you are up near Bradley Airport, check out this very interesting attraction. The Friends are always open to suggestions to increase our Museum Pass Program. Please let us know if you would like us to include another attraction. We can be reached at [email protected] or call Janet Tynan at 203 233-6407. And if you haven’t already heard the Peabody Museum in New Haven is now open and free to the public but you must order tickets on line before your visit. There is a limit of 5 tickets and as of this writing, many of the dates for the next few months are sold out. You may want to plan a summer visit now. At our April meeting, we renewed Constant Contact. If you are not on the library e-mail list, please contact the main circulation desk and we will include you in the announcements that go our periodically about our many programs for both children and adults. The same thing goes for Wowbrary. Each week you can receive a list of all the new materials that library has received and a way to borrow them. The Friends will also sponsor an adult music program as well the a children’s hair program this month. And a new cash register will be installed at the front desk. And thank you to the group who sends in an anonymous donation to the Friends every year. We appreciate your support. Boy Scout Troop 230 Besides completing vari05ous merit badges and strengthening essential scouting skills, April will find BSA Troop 230 actively engaged in the Wolcott community. Ed’s mother was related to the Alcott family and had a beautiful Alcott bible that belonged to Fred Alcott who lived on Wolcott Road. The spelling of the Alcott name has changed over the years from Alcock to Alcox to Alcott. I’m always intrigued when I hear the Alcott name because John Alcock settled on Spindle Hill in the spring of 1731 on a 117- and 1/2-acre farm, which was the beginning of a very long history of Alcott’s in our town. His first home was a log cabin, but he later built a larger framed home. John continued to add to his land estate eventually owning over one thousand acres. He and his wife Deborah Blakeslee Alcott had twelve children. He gave five of his sons a farm of about 100 acres of land in the vicinity of his home but retained his homestead until his death forty-seven years after settling on Spindle Hill. He died in 1777 eight days shy of his seventysecond birthday. His eldest son, Captain John Alcox was born on Spindle Hill on December 28, 1731, and is believed to have been the first child born in the present territory of Wolcott. He married Mary Chatfield of Derby in 1755. They settled on a farm east of his father’s home. He and his wife were among the 41 settlers who united to form the first church in Farmingbury parish. He was a man of stability and honor and a leading and substantial member of the church, but he was better suited for military service. In 1774 he was commissioned into military service and became the captain of the newly formed trainband in Waterbury (Farmingbury) Winter Parish in the 15th Regiment. The following fall when the colonists were seriously considering opposing rule by the mother country, he received a hand-written note from General Putnam explaining that the people of Boston were fired upon and asking for his support. Ten days later he received another letter from the Colonel of the Regiment, John Strong telling him to supply the men of his company with arms and ammunition and be ready to march at an hour’s notice. That was dated September 13, 1774. Captain John Alcott served his country with great spirit and energy in the revolutionary war. A quote from Samuel Orcutt’s book “The History of Wolcott…” states that, “It is said of him that on hearing some report, about the time of the commencement of war, he buckled on his Captain’s sword and walked to New Haven, twenty-five miles, to see if his services were needed as a soldier.” Three of his sons also served in the war. They were Solomon, Samuel, and John B. Captain Alcott’s wife died in 1807 and he died in 1808, one day before his 77th birthday. Amos Bronson Alcott was the grandson of Captain John Alcox and was born on Spindle Hill on November 29, 1799. The homestead of Joseph C. Alcox and Anna Bronson was near his father’s home, and it was there that Mr. Alcott spent his boyhood. Amos Bronson’s mother was instrumental in his early religious training and his educational development. “She was a lady of culture who brought to the Spindle Hill neighborhood a refinement of disposition and a grace of deportment that gave a more polite tone to the little community,” States Orcutt. One of A. Bronson’s daughters, Louisa May was the author of “Little Women,” and many other books. Louisa May Alcott was not born, nor did she live in Wolcott. There is something special in the genes of the Alcott family members. Hard work dedication and a desire to improve mankind seem to run through their veins. So now let me give you a brief history of Fred Alcott whose family bible now resides in the Center School History Museum. Fred was born August 8, 1883. He was the son of Abel Seward Alcott and Alice Marie Brightman Alcott. Fred’s grandfather was Gaylord Alcott, an eighth generation Alcott and the son of Riley and Ruth Frisbie Alcott. Fred built and lived in one of the two stone houses on Wolcott Road just over the town line in Waterbury. When Fred purchased the property in 1934 Wolcott Road or Route 69 as we know it today was called the Waterbury Bristol Road. The piece of property that he acquired was sandwiched between a house and property owned by relatives, Ida M. Alcott to the south and John A. and Lizzie Frisbie to the north. Fred worked for The Shoe Hardware Company, a division of U.S. Rubber Company and retired after 20 years of service as a toolmaker. Fred died April 28, 1966. They made cupcakes and icing from scratch, using measuring, mixing, and decorating skills that they had learned. To make it more exciting, the lesson was modeled from a hybrid of the shows Cupcake Wars and Junior Bake Off. The students worked in groups and decided what the theme was going to be, what kind of cupcake they wanted to make, what flavors of icing, and what their cupcake design would be. A four-teacher panel was used to judge the cupcakes and declare a winner. The categories were Best Tasting, Best Presentation, and Best Cupcake Overall. Questions can be directed to Meagan Angelone at [email protected] or 203.879.8183 for questions on the pre-registration process. Early preregistration is greatly appreciated in order for us to plan and budget appropriately. Please Note: If your child(ren) currently attends pre-kindergarten at Alcott Elementary School and is eligible for kindergarten, you MUST register your child(ren); students in Pre-K do NOT automatically rollover into kindergarten. Thank you for your cooperation and have a happy and safe new year. A Rewarding Career Awaits You Driving a school bus is a rewarding job for anyone who loves children.
