Boy Scout Troop 230

BSA Troop 230 has been active and involved this month.
Scouts helped the Friends of the Library with the annual
fall clean up. The boys raked, mulched, and removed de-
bris. The Troop also acted as Color Guard for both the
Veterans’ Luminary ceremony on November 10 and the
American Legion and VFW Veterans' Ceremony on No-
vember 11.

The troop also attended the weekend Scout Show campout
in East Haddam. Troops from across Connecticut came to-
gether for the weekend to share skills like fire building and
navigation, compete in friendly competitions such as a
camping cook off and free standing structure challenge and
to learn more about the history of scouting.

Further, the troop held its fall Court of Honor on October
17 at The American Legion. The scouts received the
patches and rank advancements they’ve completed while
enjoying desserts and treats with family and friends.

Congratulations goes out to Joe Giannattasio for earning
the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Joe planned and executed
the building of an outdoor classroom at Wakelee School.
Teachers and students will be able to enjoy learning in na-
ture for years to come.

Upcoming events include a Food Drive on the Wolcott
Town Green supporting the Wolcott Food Pantry on No-
vember 19 and winter campouts in both Connecticut and
Vermont.

Hello and welcome to this wonderful Holi-

tober and our very first Fall Festival,
everyone is looking forward to our next ven-
ture. November, we were fortunate to be
able to gather in All Saints Church and enjoy a “Pot Luck”
supper with each other. Many ladies brought their favorite
dishes and the dinner was enjoyed by all.

Just to go back to October for a moment, and to once again,
thank all the ladies who gave of their time effortlessly, on
the first successful Fall Festival. Committee Chairs, Chris
Culver and Jude Purcell, and to all the members, who gave
their time to help out, are to be commended for their hard
work. Profits from the Festival are raised to support differ-
ent needs in our Town.

Also at the Fall Festival, member Jennifer Battaglia, Vet-
erans’ Chair, ran her first Car Show. A big shout out to
thank Jennifer for her efforts to create and run this success-
ful event. Proceeds from this event will go both to the Wol-
cott food Pantry and also to our local Veterans’’ needs.

As this Holiday season is upon us, we look forward to pro-
viding and supporting several needy families here in Wol-

may not have been able to enjoy and celebrate this won-

Happy New Year! Wolcott Community News

Wolcott Historical Society - December 2022

by Florence Goodman

This month I’m going to revisit a
series of articles that I wrote about
back in 2017 about small planes that
came down in our town. The idea to
research these stories came about from
a Facebook post that I was following
at the time. There are several “Wolcott” groups on Face Book
but depending on the topic and one’s point of view or “mem-
ory” the comments might be fact or fiction. In January of
2017 on “Wolcott Chats” Jerry O’Neill posted a question
looking for information about a WWII plane that was located
on someone’s lawn in Wolcott many years ago. His question
received a wealth of responses and caused me to start search-
ing my files for information on when and where planes had
either crashed or been placed in town over the years. What
I found was quite interesting so once again I will share my
findings with you over the next few months.

July 31, 1931, a hydroplane from Montauk Point, Long Island
was headed to a Waterbury airport when it was forced to make
an emergency landing on Chestnut Hill reservoir because of
instrument gauge failure. The paper stated that numerous
bathers became alarmed as the plane landed in the middle of
the lake very close to shore. Two aviators and a passenger on
plane came through the ordeal unharmed, but the plane sus-
tained some damage. The pilots explained to witnesses that
they were unaware that they were losing altitude because the
instrument panel registered 1000 feet when they were at 200
feet. By then it was too late to make adjustments, so they
opted for a landing in the reservoir. During the descent the
plane grazed several pine trees and opened a hole on its
underside, which caused it to submerge soon after landing.

also implied that after all was said and done; it was doubtful
that the plane could be flown out of the area.

The construction project for Petro Pat is moving right along at 685 Wolcott Road. The roof is in the process of being
completed and the rest of the building hopes to sealed up for the winter. The completion of the project is scheduled for
the summer or fall of 2023.

This bee was busy collecting pollen from the last of flower
blossoms in early November, thanks to the mild tempera-
tures. Judging by the orange colored sacks under its’ wings,
it was making a pretty good haul.

The annual Veterans Day ceremony on the Wolcott Town Green was held under overcast skies with a brief rain shower
on November 11th. A great turnout of Veterans, towns people and civic organizations was on hand for the event, with a
few dignitaries giving speeches. An open invitation was extended to everyone to meet at the VFW for some turkey soup
and sandwiches following the ceremony.

October 29th was National Drug take back day. Our local
police department partnered with the Wolcott CASA or-
ganization to collect unwanted or expired prescription
drugs in front of the Wolcott police department. People
drove up in their cars and handed over bags of the un-
wanted drugs to the CASA volunteers who deposited them
in trash containers. All collected drugs were brought to a
state DEA facility and properly destroyed.

Target on Tyrrell

Project Explore students are helping
Officer Williams solve the crime of the
missing Nespresso Machine through
inquiry based interdisciplinary activity in the
Library Media Center. The “crime” committed
was described to the students by Officer
William, “Hi Students! A crime has been
committed in our building when I wasn’t here...
I need your help in reviewing the evidence,
studying the crime scene, and analyzing witness
accounts. Mr. Caetano’s treasured Nespresso
Machine has been stolen from the Main Office.
I was able to secure the scene and collect phys-
ical evidence, but I do need assistance in ana-
lyzing it all to move forward with the case. As
you work with the different aspects of the crime,
please take careful notes so they can be
reviewed later. You will now be presented with
your classified file and find out your role in our
simulation. Good luck and remember I’m
counting on you!” Students gathered what
evidence they could by analyzing fingerprints,
shoe prints, hair, evidence bags, witness state-
ments, and the crime scene. They will be work-
ing in Project Explore to find the “criminal”.
