ELEMENTS OF DESIGN.

Color.
Line.
Shape.
Texture.

Value.

COLOR.

Color is seen either by the way light reflects off a surface, or in colored light
sources. Color and particularly contrasting color is also used to draw the
attention to a particular part of the image. There are primary colors, secondary
colors, and intermediate colors.

• Primary colors: Red, Yellow, and

• Secondary colors: Orange, green,

horizontal.

SHAPE.

A shape is an enclosed object. Shapes can be created by line, or by color and value changes
which define their edges.
There are two general categories that use to describe shapes. Geometric and Free-Form.

Geometric shape. Free-Form shape.

There are two types of texture: Real Texture and Visual or Implied Texture.

VALUE.

The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest.
The value halfway between these extreme is called middle gray.
Value is very important to drawing and painting because value changes are what create
contrast.
Values scales are charts that demonstrates the changing values of a tone.
