For 50 years, Trailside Galleries has provided Jackson with the 165 North Center • Jackson Hole, WY 83001
most excellent of art—from acrylic landscape paintings to bronze
sculptures of wildlife. “There are not a lot of galleries that can 1.800.733.1038 • 307.733.1038
say that,” Maryvonne Leshe, the gallery’s current managing partner, www.scandiadownjh.com • [email protected]
said. “A gallery can’t stay in business for 50 years without being able to
provide its clients with top quality art and excellent customer service.” 103
The gallery represents nearly 80 full-time artists, including favorite
painters Tucker Smith, Bill Anton, Z.S. Liang and Mian Situ. JHStyleMagazine.com | Summer/Fall 2014
Leshe has been a partner at the Jackson gallery as well as its sister
storefront in Scottsdale, Arizona, since 1994. She began her career
as a salesperson at the Scottsdale space in 1976. “When the gallery
started 50 years ago, there was not much of a tourist trade in Jack-
son,” she explained. “The gallery really needed to have more of a
year-round season. Arizona in the wintertime is marvelous. We’re a
destination gallery. We’re busy in the winter months in Arizona and
the summer months in Jackson.”
As a child in Paris, Leshe’s interest in art first developed as she spent
time with her grandfather, who was a professional artist. “That was
for me what really shaped my future,” she said. “I’d spend a great
deal of time in his studio. I soaked it in.”
She studied art in college but didn’t have the desire to create it her-
self, according to Leshe. “I’ve always had a passion for being around
art and collecting it and just enjoying it,” she explained.
Instead, she found her niche being around art in the gallery and dis-
covered she really enjoyed the business end of it. “It’s a pleasure
meeting the clientele that we have,” Leshe said. “It’s enjoyable find-
ing just the right painting for what they’re looking for. One of the
focuses I have is constantly finding new, talented artists and intro-
ducing them to my clients.”
Leshe and her partner, Roxanne Hofmann, were instrumental in
starting the Jackson Hole Art Auction in 2007. The auction, which
takes place each September during the Fall Arts Festival at the Cen-
ter for the Arts, is nationally recognized. “It certainly has brought
something new and exciting to Jackson,” she said. “I work all year
long to find exceptional, quality art to put into the auction.”
As part of a vetting committee for the Jackson Hole Art Auction, Leshe
has curated million dollar paintings by Fredric Remington, Maynard
Dixon and others. As a result of Leshe and Hofmann’s efforts, the
auction has now developed a niche for wildlife art, including work
by important deceased artists such as Carl Rungius and Bob Kuhn
as well as living artists, including Tucker Smith, Ken Carlson and Carl
Brenders. Many art collectors, old and new, flock to the valley each
fall for this event.
And, of course, visitors and locals alike can get a good art fix at Trail-
side Galleries at 130 East Broadway. “We have a lot of experience
and a great reputation,” Leshe said. “We provide great service and a
lot of knowledge to our clients.” n

The historic landmark brick building just before the flashing
light in Victor, Idaho, is home to the intersection of décor and www.carpetcowboys.com
design. Festive Living has become a hub for those looking for
everything from the perfect baby gift to furnishings for an entire 105
home—right down to the pots and pans. “We sell a lot more than
just your thousand dollar sofa,” owner Hayden Jones said. In fact, JHStyleMagazine.com | Summer/Fall 2014
Festive Living specializes in commercial as well as residential design
for clients from all over the country.
Originally hailing from South Carolina, Jones combines Southern
charm and Western sensibility with her ability to decorate. Like
many valley residents, Jones first visited the Jackson area during an
endless summer college break, only to return to sink deep and last-
ing roots—she opened Festive Living eight years ago. Armed with a
degree in textiles from Clemson University in South Carolina, Jones
has become a consistent business presence in a downtown that has
experienced a lot of changes during the past decade.
Festive Living stayed viable throughout the turbulent waves of the
housing market. Their most successful year of business to date was
in 2013—a testament to their abundance and longevity. Perhaps the
combination of reputation and family support is the recipe for success.
Her husband, Henry Jones, works for a local bank and does the com-
pany’s books, while their 3-year-old twin boys, Gray and Woods, have
become major fans of the Festive Living delivery truck.
Establishing herself as a go-to designer for second home owners and
locals has been a word of mouth endeavor, but one that’s paid off as
Festive Living continues to grow and profit from both out-of-towners
and continued local business support. When most businesses expe-
rienced the fallout of the economic downturn, Festive Living thrived.
According to Jones, “We stayed really busy throughout the recession
because of people buying foreclosures. Those multi-million dollar
houses still needed to be furnished. People moved in and swept
them up for great deals.”
Jones finds the most challenging aspect of being an interior design firm
in a small town to be the fact that Internet shopping can make sales
more difficult. “For example, people assume that they can purchase
an item at Pottery Barn for less,” she said. “In the end, web shopping is
about assumption. A huge part of our business is household wares—
everything Williams and Sonoma has, we sell here.” Internet shopping
can take away from the reality that a consumer can often find the
same item locally, giving local business back to local people.
And local business has been the secret recipe for Jones and her partner
in design, Erin Gaffney, who’ve established a flourishing design haven.
Gaffney has a degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Port-
land. Starting as a small brick and mortar business, they’ve grown into
a primarily interior design business that gets much of its traffic from a
national clientele. Hayden remembered, “I always knew this is what I
wanted to do, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. My favorite part of the busi-
ness is decorating—creating a vision and watching it come together.” n

– Barbara Herrick JHStyleMagazine.com | Summer/Fall 2014

Astream of luxurious smells and an array of high-end fabrics
delight the senses as visitors enter Barbara Herrick’s Scandia
Down showroom. Located on Center Street, just north of the
Town Square, the store sells much more than just linens—it offers
custom services to help people design their dream rooms, including
off-site fabrication.
And then there’s Lilli, the store’s official greeter, a 7-year-old golden
retriever who has developed her very own doggie accoutrement
section—complete with dog beds, chew toys and biscuits. The art-
fully decorated space features everything from locally made jewelry,
lotions and furniture pieces to imported linens from Paris. Herrick also
proudly displays one of her employee’s paintings on the wall.
There is an adorable baby section that Herrick says has grown over
the years, since her own daughter was born. She recounts, “I had
a baby girl 14 years ago and I just started buying her things and
thought, I might as well buy these things for the store.” The depart-
ment has grown considerably from when she first began. Her daugh-
ter now helps her in the store for a few hours a day every summer.
What has also helped Herrick over the years is her advertising back-
ground. She’s a firm believer in all forms of advertising and has uti-
lized many mediums to publicize her business. Having majored in
communications and interior design in college, her design aesthetic
comes from a well-rounded foundation. “A design eye isn’t necessar-
ily something you’re born with,” she said.
And it always helps to have relatives who can influence you in posi-
tive ways. Herrick’s mother had great taste and her aunt was an inte-
rior designer. Both women would become her role models. “There’s
a skill set and so much you need to know about what makes certain
materials special,” she explained. “To be able to identify and pair fine
fabrics takes some experience and education.” Herrick’s sense of fin-
ery is evident in the spaces she’s created.
Showroom scents range from lavender to citrus. And the smell of suc-
cess is certainly sweeter after 27 years in business. After several years
visiting her Jackson-based brother in the late 1990s, Herrick, an adver-
tising executive from Michigan who formerly brokered for 136 television
stations, decided to re-invent her livelihood and her life. When Scandia
Down came up for sale she decided to change careers and leave the
Midwest. She had no idea what she was getting herself into, just that she
would do anything to live in Jackson. “No regrets,” Herrick said. “Owning
a small business in Jackson has been a life lesson all the way around.”
In life and real estate, timing is everything. Twelve years ago, Her-
rick was fortunate enough to buy the building her business currently
resides in, making much more of an investment in her own future.
“I will retire one day,” she said. “But that won’t be for a long time,
because I really enjoy knowing that people leave here as satisfied
customers … everybody is happy when they sleep well.” n

RINGHOLZ Rises
Local Artist Debuts “Rise of the Fenix”

WORDS KRISTEN POPE | IMAGES ANDY BARDON AND KARA ADOMAITIS

“I am grateful for
what my career has done for me,

therefore, the heart of
giving back is always included

in what I do.”

- Amy Ringholz

112 Pushing a cart loaded with art supplies down the hall of a Cath-
olic school in her home state of Ohio, Amy Ringholz quickly
JHStyleMagazine.com | Summer/Fall 2014 realized that she wanted to do something different. Newly grad-
uated with degrees in drawing and art education, Ringholz decided
to make a move and, at the age of 25, she packed up and moved to
Jackson, one of the big western art markets. “I almost settled down in
Ohio, but there was something tugging at my heart,” she explained. “I
wanted to do something special with my life and test to see if dreams
could be realized.”

When she first arrived in Jackson 11 years ago,
she moved into an East Jackson basement
with three roommates. This year, her flourish-
ing art career allowed her to purchase her first
home. “I picked Jackson because of the size of
the town and I thought I could make a name
for myself here,” Ringholz explained. “It fit my
personality and artwork. There’s such drama
in the mountains, dramatic weather, it’s a
great fit for my artwork and it has been won-
derful becoming a part of this community.”
Over the past 12 years Ringholz has shown
her work in galleries throughout the west. She
is now shifting her strategy, working instead
to promote her own work and style to create
an art movement that promotes art for every-
one to enjoy. “I’ve had wonderful success with
my galleries but, being eternally creative, I’m
always up to push myself to another chal-
lenge,” Ringholz explained. “I throw art shows
and want the audience to come play a role and
be part of the show. It’s the sort of excitement
I want to infuse in my art openings, trying to
bring out the creativity in everyone else and
invite a following to be a part of art shows.”
Her first museum solo show, “Rise of the
Fenix,” debuts July 12 at the National Museum
of Wildlife Art. The 500-person opening event
will have a participatory twist. “I hope the
town will come out and have an unforgetta-
ble creative experience,” Ringholz said. “In the
traditional western art world, it’s a big deal
that the museum allowed this experiment,
pushing wildlife art, with a fresh new feeling,”
Ringholz said.
Ringholz strives to give back to the commu-
nity.“I am grateful for what my career has
done for me, therefore, the heart of giving
back is always included in what I do,” Ringholz
explained. She strives to always give back and
has recently established the Ringholz Founda-
tion to build upon the work she has done over
the past three years with the Jackson Hole
Rotary and her alma mater, Bowling Green
State University. “We will provide art scholar-
ships and awards based on hard work, talent
and heart,” Ringholz explained. The Founda-
tion will be present at each of her art shows,
selling $25 raffle tickets to win an original
piece of Ringholz’s work, with all the proceeds
going to the Foundation. “I love that some-
one unexpected can suddenly become an art
collector in one fortunate night!” she said.
People also donate directly to the Ringholz
Foundation at: RingholzStudios.com. n
