Kids StyleJACKSONHOLE
A BIG THANK YOU
After receiving a great deal of support for our first issue,
we decided to go ahead and create a winter edition of Kids
Style, this time trying to incorporate a wider variety of kids.
In order to do that, there are a number of people I’d like to
thank for pointing me in the direction of incredibly talented and unique
elementary and middle-schoolers, however, the people at the top of that
list are the kids themselves.
I realize giving an interview at the age of ten can be nerve racking and
scary (as it still is into your twenties), and seeing your personal story
published might bring on an onslaught of excitement, embarrassment,
or both. I am so appreciative for the openness and willingness of all
the kids to talk to me. I was blown away with level of confidence,
curiosity, engagement, and love for this valley—
something that we all feel but comes out so
naturally in the words of a young person.
It’s hard to believe, but this year for me
marks the end of my college career and I
frequently find myself wishing I could be
a twelve year old in the Tetons again.
So I encourage kids of all ages to
cherish and explore everything
Jackson has to offer.

Kids SWtyollefi GenschA10-YEAR-OLDLIVINGTHEDREAM
JACKSON HOLE
Wolfi Gensch is the ultimate 10-year-old ski bum.
He has lived in Jackson his whole life and spends
all of his free time ripping around his 2,500 acre
playground, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
Wolfi skied Corbet’s Couloir for the first time when he was
seven, skis on the Teton Village Ski Team, spends weekends
riding the tram, and often rides around with his dad in the
snowcat at night while they groom the mountain for visitors
the next day.
10 Kids Style JACKSON HOLE
His idols are World Cup skiers Mikaela Shiffrin
and Resi Stiegler. At the age of 10, Wolfi is
doing what most people who move to Jackson
hope to do in their 20s as they see out their
college days and move to the land of bottomless
snow and mountain freedom. Wolfi is “living
the dream.”
Though you would never know it, Wolfi is also
combating health difficulties. Some kids are
born with only one kidney, which ultimately
grows stronger to compensate for missing
the second kidney. However, Wolfi was born
with two kidneys, but one is small and non-
functioning. Since he still has two kidneys,
his good kidney struggles to compensate so
he must take special care not to injure it.
Furthermore, Wolfi was born with a hole in his
heart that was surgically repaired when he
was two. Though he’s been advised not to play
contact sports, Wolfi’s parents have done their
best to make sure Wolfi can still enjoy being
a kid in the Tetons. When Wolfi goes skiing,
he wears a special vest and extra padding to
protect his good kidney, and keeps a close eye
on his blood pressure.
Wolfi certainly isn’t letting his health
challenges slow him down: when asked what
his favorite ski racing event was, he answered
downhill. Watch out Mom and Dad. Wolfi likes
to go fast, catch air, hit jumps in the terrain
park, and drive around in the winch cat with
his dad. He’s even getting into backcountry
skiing, casually mentioning that he skied
Cody Peak (a 10,758-foot peak to the south of
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort) on the Fourth
of July last summer.

Buck Milligan
TOP CHEF
Similar to most kids in Jackson, Buck likes to ski, play
soccer, and go kayaking. He trains for Nordic skiing after
school with the Jackson Hole Ski Club and goes downhill
skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort on the weekends.
Buck likes to hang out with his friends and family, and cook dinner
with dad. Unlike most 12 year olds in Jackson, however, Buck is
a wizard in the kitchen. In fact, Buck was recently crowned the
youngest “Chopped Junior Grand Champion” on the new Food
Network TV show Chopped Junior.
14 Kids Style JACKSON HOLE
In each competition (episode), the contestants
get four surprise ingredients they must use
to make an appetizer, entrée, and dessert.
Based on creativity, flavor, and presentation,
the judges pick a winner. The first episode he
participated in was Thanksgiving themed.
Wowing the judges, he won the episode’s
competition and moved on to compete against
16 winners from different episodes in a battle
for the overall championship. Buck made
it to the finals where it all came down to an
interesting set of ingredients.
Working with a combination of ground camel
meat, earthworm jerky, kale and tomato
candies for an appetizer, Buck presented the
judges with caramel and pine nut meatballs
served with earthworm jerky and tomato
candy marinara sauce served over a bed of
kale. Though the entree round threw another
curve ball, Buck--whose dad makes knives
for a living--was able to utilize his experience
with butchering. He made a boneless goat leg
sautéed with sweet cherry ketchup and served
it with salad and mashed potatoes. To top it
all off, Buck crafted a simple berry tart with a
creative cherimoya whipped cream (cherimoya
is a tropical fruit with poisonous seeds).
Now, Buck is back in Jackson attending 7th
grade and allegedly eating “nothing out of the
ordinary” though he packs his own lunch for
school every day. This season, he’s looking
forward to going skiing and enjoying winter
in the Tetons like the rest of his classmates
and friends.

Aurora Stiles
NORDIC PRINCESS
Aurora Stiles has been Nordic skiing as long as most kids have been walking. She hopped on snow
at the ripe age of three and her enthusiasm for the sport seemingly hasn’t dwindled since. Aurora
lives in Moran, Wyoming, on the north end of Grand Teton National Park and commutes an hour to
school and ski training on weekdays. With a perspective well beyond her years, Aurora says that
her favorite things about Nordic skiing are her teammates, being active, and spending time outside. Aurora’s
favorite ski spot is Trail Creek Nordic Center located at the base of Teton Pass. She recommends trying out
the Betty Woosely Loop.
16 Kids Style JACKSON HOLE
Aurora tells a story from one of her favorite Pink Chicken • Rylee + Cru • Petit Bateau • Nununu
days at Trail Creek: Sydney Wilmot, Natalie Winter Water Factory • Freshly Picked • Finn + Emma
O’Brien, and I were skate skiing on the Betty
Woosley loop and when we were almost Roberta Roller Rabbit • Yosi Samra • Hello Shiso
finished, coming down the hill we just went Noodle & Boo • Babo Botanicals • Lil Lemons
up and we saw a mom and a baby moose
about a foot off the trail. We were really
scared because the mom moose was staring
right at us, so we stopped as quickly as we
could and started going back up the hill.
We waited there and the mom moose kept
coming closer as we went farther away. So
then, some other people who were on the
competition team skied up and we told them
about the moose. For some reason though
they just kept skiing. Then they started
screaming and yelling and we just stared as
the moose ran away from them and us.
To start off the season, Aurora went to West
Yellowstone, Montana over Thanksgiving
to train on snow for the first time this year.
Before that, Aurora and her teammates
were training by running and roller skiing,
an exercise that’s similar to Nordic skiing,
but on pavement. When she’s not racing,
training, or going to school, Aurora likes to
go skiing with her family and friends, play
volleyball, and go hiking on Togwotee Pass
near her home in Moran.

Karoline Montes
DOUG COOMBS FOUNDATION’S
STANDOUT ATHLETE
Karoline Montes, a fiery fifth grader, older sister, and dedicated student is also a true multi-sport
athlete. Though playing soccer and skiing are her favorite activities, Karoline also snowboards, ice
skates, and does gymnastics. She plays soccer in both the summer and winter, and ski races after
school at Snow King Mountain.
18 Kids Style JACKSON HOLE
Though she’s been skiing since she was Journeys School
three, Karoline first started ski racing with
Emily Coombs, founder of the Doug Coombs Pre-K-12th Grade
Foundation. Karoline told KidsStyle that
initially, she just wanted to play soccer, but Academic Engagement
Emily introduced her to girls who played Character Development
soccer and skied. Confident and fearless in Community Connections
her interview, it’s no surprise Karoline is
thriving as a skier.
Emily, an accomplished skier and spouse
of the late Doug Coombs, started the Doug
Coombs Foundation in hopes that she could
help more kids like Karoline participate in
Jackson’s ski culture.
Under Emily’s direction, the Doug
Coombs Foundation provides a much-
needed opportunity for low-income kids
to participate in the sport that makes
Jackson such a unique place to grow up. The
foundation provides financial assistance and
inclusive spaces for kids of all backgrounds
to join their peers in activities on and off the
ski slopes. It is heartening to see the Coombs
Foundation fostering a more integrated and
inclusive community. Go Karoline! KidsStyle
is excited to see you grow!
