BRINGING IT BACK

cott Kauf never imagined himself as a bar owner. The world-champion mogul skier
was living in Vail in the ‘90s and traveling around the West when he fell in love with
the down-home atmosphere and natural beauty of Alta, Wyoming. Fast forward to
today, and you’ll still find Scott shredding Targhee with his two kids before enjoying a well-
deserved drink at the Tetonia Club, a historic building that Scott painstakingly revitalized.

Markida explains that the result is a reduc-
tion in inflammation and pain, increased
circulation, an increase in overall well-being,
and improved homeostasis.
Since opening the wellness center, Markida
has witnessed impressive results. One cli-
ent’s 15-year struggle with back pain ended
after just one double cryo session. And while
many people have seen shockingly fast
results, generally it takes a series of multi-
ple sessions.
Another client, who was stooped over due
to five herniated discs, did 14 sessions over
seven days and was able to visibly stand up
straighter before the last treatment. Markida
explains that the cold likely allowed the discs
to go back to where they used to be, relieving
the client’s chronic discomfort and allowing
them to return to their active lifestyle.
But at CRYO Therapy Idaho it isn’t just about
the cold. Markida and her team also offer Bio
Electro Magnetic Energy Regulation (BEMER),
which improves blood flow in the capillaries
and increases circulation; Sunlighten Infra-
red Saunas for detoxing and using the sun’s
healing light, without harmful UV rays; the
AO Scan, a digital body analyzer; and several
other products that work at a cellular level.
“CRYO Therapy Idaho’s primary focus is an
optimum level of wellness now and healthier
longevity for the future. We do this by assist-
ing the body to better self-regulate, self-re-
pair, and self-regenerate as it is innately pro-
grammed to do,” says Markida. “The therapies
are totally passive and non-invasive. By being
proactive in a totally unique and holistic
way, everyone has the possibility to achieve
greater health and wellness.”
It doesn’t matter if you are dealing with
chronic conditions, a recent injury or surgery,
or just want to challenge yourself to three
minutes in -250 degree cold — you might
be surprised with the results. Just don’t be
alarmed if, like Markida and many of her cli-
ents, you get totally hooked! n

ire pits. Outdoor living spaces. Tree-
framed views. These are the visual
hallmarks of the mountain culture
lifestyle. For 30 years, MD Landscaping
in Driggs has been helping plan and
develop these spaces. I caught up with
Carrie Baysek, MD’s retail manager and
a 25-year veteran of the business, to
learn more about MD Landscaping and to
contemplate how one’s personal space
reflects our unique mountain lifestyle.
The MD Landscaping legacy started when Mike
Stears and Dean Kunz from Rexburg, Idaho started
a lawn mowing business in 1994. They added a small
greenhouse shortly thereafter and the business
gradually grew into a landscaping company that
designs, installs, and maintains landscapes across
the Idaho Teton Valley and Teton County, Wyoming.
At their Driggs headquarters, they have a large retail
garden center with a gift boutique, café, and all the
landscaping gear you could ever want. They also
have an off-site tree farm.
In March 2020, Brian Haynie and Mike Hammond of
Sugar City, Idaho purchased the business, seeing
the potential of an established company with a solid
core of employees and a cast of loyal customers.
“There are probably 20 of us that have been here for
15-plus years,” Carrie says proudly. She attributes
the family culture of MD Landscaping to hard work,
a lot of mutual respect, and a shared passion for
learning new landscaping trends and projects. With
120 seasonal employees and 80 year-round staff,
the business has very little turnover. “We have His-
panic families that come back year after year for
the summer season; they travel here from El Oro
and Tlaxcala, Mexico to work with us every spring.
They’re part of the family,” she says.
In addition to staff that feels like family, MD Land-
scaping has created a gathering place for the com-
munity. Carrie explains, “we are a ‘destination garden

center.’ Folks come in from small outlying communities to stock up. They
show up with empty horse trailers each spring and leave with them full.”
The boutique and café have also become a community gathering place —
people will drop in to browse, have a bowl of soup, and walk around the nurs-
ery. The Driggs shop also serves as a knowledge hub. When the pandemic
shut down activities last spring, DIY gardeners reached out to MD Landscap-
ing for advice and materials. Nascent gardeners started vegetable plots.
As a landscaping business with local roots, MD Landscaping is keyed
into the unique challenges of landscaping in the Teton Valley. Carrie
notes that elevation, temperature, soil, and moisture are all factors that
impact planting in the area. And when it comes to landscaping, planting
with consideration of local wildlife and crafting outdoor living spaces that
reflect the mountain culture often inform the look and design.
Does form follow function or does function follow form in the landscaping
world? Fortunately, at MD Landscaping, you don’t have to choose. n

“Hot On The Trail”
As I walked out on the RARE Gallery deck on September 1st of 2019, what
twenty minutes earlier had been a crisp early fall’s clear blue sky, was now
engulfed in a thick red blanket of smoke and flames. Saddle Butt was on fire.
I ran and grabbed my camera and soon found myself climbing up a tree in
Town Square Park to gain a vantage point to capture the flames and smoke
eerily dancing behind the world-famous Cowboy Bar sign as if the horse’s
hooves and the cowboy’s perseverance had lit the place ablaze.

Rick “Kivie” Armstrong — Skier, Explorer, Artist, Visionary
As a mountaineer and professional skier, he has lived a life filled with adventure from decades of seeking unskied lines on unclimbed peaks around the
world. Having helped pioneer skiing in Alaska, Antarctica, and many other distant destinations, he used his skis to paint eloquent lines down perilous
mountain faces with high consequences from small mistakes. As the clock of time has ticked away and his advantage of youth has faded, his goal of
accomplishing high-level physical feats has been replaced by capturing the elusive perfect image. Today, “Kivie” has focused his passion towards the
more cerebral and artistic pursuit of capturing once-in-a-lifetime events, with a camera, that cannot be repeated. In doing so, he is leaving humanity
with a powerful visual historical record of that point in time from his perspective. These are important images that will stand the test of time and
continue to gain importance for future generations. His works can be found in important major collections globally, and, of course, at RARE Gallery.

“The Chief” — David Yarrow
The senior elder of the fabled Lakota tribe is Chief
John Spotted Tail. We spent two days with him in
Northern Wyoming and he was so excited to wear
the headpiece that only the most senior Native
American chiefs like him can wear. His attire was
emphatically his decision, not ours. Their heritage
is integral to their souls. The ground in front of
Devils Tower has film history. It is, of course,
where Spielberg shot “Close Encounters of the
Third Kind” immediately after the release of “Jaws”
in 1975. More poignantly, it is sacred land for
Native Americans, and at dawn, before our early
morning shoot, John and his wife, Tamara Stands
and Looks Back, spent some time there praying.
At around 8:30 a.m., the low-hanging clouds
lifted above the iconic geographical landmark
and shafts of light lit up our canvas. We had our
moment. Later that day, when I showed Chief
John Spotted Tail this image, he shed a tear and I
am proud to admit I did too. It was one of the most
privileged days I have ever had in the field.
“Grand Prismatic “ — Ed Nash
Ed Nash was born in Letchworth Garden City, England in 1976.
Letchworth was built by and designed by Quakers in 1903 and was a
focus of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Like several members of the
British Post-Impressionist movement who visited, lived, and painted in
Letchworth, Ed was inspired by the town’s amalgamation of urban and
rural life and its focus on visual beauty in the town environment, which
was really the ideal of the “Garden City” movement.

“3:10 to Yuma” — David Yarrow
Railway tracks can be visually strong props for photographers and filmmakers as they lead the eye and also offer a palpable sense of travel and
adventure. The problem is that train tracks are mostly live and therefore out of bounds for working artists. Railroads played an integral role in the push
West in the 19th century and the pioneering spirit that characterised their construction has long fascinated me. We located a disused track not far from
Marfa in West Texas stretching all the way to Presidio on the Mexican border. It ran through private land and in one cattle ranch a modest station had
been built to the side of the track for the Oscar-winning 2007 movie, “There Will Be Blood.” We negotiated terms with the ranch owner and he gave us
access to film on a location well known to Daniel Day-Lewis.
