Emerson helps shoppers find right styles

WELCOMING SMILE OFFERS A STYLE SUGGESTION. THAT’S STORE MANAGER OLIVIA EMERSON.
For six years, Emerson has worked as the right
hand to store owner Dana Sanders Souther. Orig-
inally from Ohio, Emerson moved out to Jackson
after a stint in the fashion industry in New York City
working for fashion designer Tory Burch. Although
she never envisioned a future in fashion, her pas-
sion for well-crafted designs was ignited in the Big
Apple. But city life wasn’t what she envisioned.
Emerson spent her summers in the Wyoming
mountains with her family, and she knew a break
from metropolitan life would be a welcomed
respite. On every trip to Jackson, she always
made a point to stop at Terra.
“During our trips, I remember shopping at Terra,”
Emerson says. “The employees were always so
friendly and helpful. I felt like I could spend hours
there and have fun.”
A "cold call" email led to an interview and, to
Emerson’s delight, a job offer. She moved to the
Tetons ready to dive in as Terra’s store manager.
For 14 years, Terra has cemented itself as a mod- “She knows just what a customer needs when

ART AND LIGHT
Horizon artist captures emotion through photography
WORDS Kelsey Dayton | IMAGES Courtesy Kylie Spence
AFTER THE ACCIDENT, TRACIE SPENCE LOST HER CREATIVITY, EMPATHY,
AND PERSONALITY, ALONG WITH HER BALANCE AND PART OF HER VISION.
SHE WAS SKIING AT MONTANA’S BIG SKY RESORT IN DECEMBER 2010 ON
STEEP TERRAIN AND WAS SUDDENLY GOING WAY TOO FAST. SHE WAS
WEARING A HELMET, BUT SHE DESCRIBES THE CRASH AS LIKE SMASHING
AGAINST “FROZEN GRANITE.”
Spence was a commercial photographer before “The rawness and wildness of the wild mustangs

camera. Instead she spent years in vision and first shoot for myself. It started a new chapter in
balance rehabilitation, physical therapy, and my life.”

“Whatever I photograph, that’s
what drives me, what moves
me, and what I hope will move
other people. I’m looking for
spirituality and emotion. Are
you evoked to feel or think
when you see it?”
– Tracie Spence
husband gifted her a camera in her mid-20s. She
entered an image of her then 3-year-old daughter
at an old church into a Fuji Film contest and won.
That led to commercial and fashion shoots. She
recently moved to Big Sky, Montana, from California
for a slower pace of life.
Her shoots today are a bit different from her early
days of commercial photography, but they continue
to draw on her experiences.
“The way I shoot wild mustangs is how I photo-
graphed my talent for ad campaigns,” she says.
“Even though I was well-researched, nothing was
well-rehearsed. That’s why everything is so natural
and fluid and organic.”
Spence is drawn to the calm and peaceful emotions
she feels when she sees the wild mustangs. She
wants to create a connection between the viewer
and the horses.
“Whatever I photograph, that’s what drives me, what
moves me, and what I hope will move other people,”
she says. “I’m looking for spirituality and emotion.
Are you evoked to feel or think when you see it?”
Her images are also defined by composition, crop-
ping, and light.
“I love light so much, it actually will distract me
if I’m driving and I see the light filtering through
trees and the contrasting shadows,” she says. “I’m
looking at the light rather than the road.”
Her photography blends art, science, and emo-
tion. She can’t control the shoot like she could
in a studio. The animals move when and where
they want. Her job is to know how to capture the
moment whenever it happens. And if it doesn’t
happen, that’s okay, too.
"Before my accident, my work was all about the
art and the final outcome,” she says. “However,
now my work is less about achieving the perfect
shot and more about being in the moment with
my subject and the environment.” n
