"PERSEVERING IN HIS GREATNESS*
4 .~_- (\W) eare all familiar of the story when Jesus performed the
‘=7" ~ miracle of feeding the five thousand (Mark 6:30-44). As
| TI re-read these passages, God impressed upon my heart
al a little more insight on this undeniably amazing event.
|,
4, Before Jesus performed this miracle, He acknowledged the need for
:o rest after His disciples' long ministry tours. "The apostles gathered
around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught."
ay Then Jesus said, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and
get some rest." He said this because there were so many people

J "coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat.” (vv

; 30-31)

— pe=., y—ea4ionmeee\ In these verses, we see the empathy of Christ for His loyal disciples.
He understood their need to take a break from doing His work after
>f
successfully completing their missions.
\
Surely, we’ve all had our fair share of times when we wanted to rest
’ and take a break from our ministries and simply prioritize our walk
with Christ. For whatever reasons we’ve had for our weariness, God
7 certainly empathizes with us. He understands. But, this also
doesn't stop Him from letting us know the value of continuing to
~ oa.na eee witness to other people if the opportunity arises. When the five
thousand people appeared, He didnt send them away. Rather, he
“a ie/.—— prioritized them, and the disciples followed suit. (v335-37)
—re :
ssc Not only did Jesus teach/mentor His disciples, He also exemplified
atFsFi 1
His teachings by becoming a model of compassion. The heart of the
/ miracle was the response to the call of compassion... at all times!
These people were important to Jesus and He knew that they
ay oes, needed the spiritual nourishment that only He can give. He showed
His disciples the importance of putting aside one's own interests
| rt; and prioritizing the benefit of others. He knew how essential their
mission was. (v33)
=|
nr1 ‘ F t Like the disciples, we sometimes resist to do the things He places in
ya y front of us. We get tired, feel we have better things to do, we are
|¥ % happy experiencing the love of Christ but are unwilling to share it,
or we simply hesitate and allow our fears or inhibitions to take over.
{ii But Christ insists, "Give them something to eat". He is asking us to
break our pattern of resistance and melt it all down into surrender.
|, He is asking us to persevere and be always ready to answer the call
|’ to witness to others the greatness of Christ. This is the goal of
preaching, growth groups, outreaches, and all ministry work. We
J may never know exactly how Christ moves, but all we need to know
is that He is asking us to persevere, to have faith, and to move with
peef ead* compassion and love for all people. Allow God to do a remarkable
SUBIC BAY miracle through you!

BREAKING GROUND OFFAITH

SERMON 7: PROVEN EXAMPLE

Rev. Mau Rivera / Philippians 2:19-30

BY ASTART BREAKING GROUND EXEMPLIFYING DISCIPLE WHO IS

DEPENDABLE, DILIGENT, AND DRIVEN FOR CHRIST

|. DEPENDABLE FOR CHRIST

791 hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that |also may be cheered when |
receive news about you. *°! have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your

welfare. #For everyone looks out for his own interesis, not those of Jesus Christ. #But you
know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with
me in the work of the gospel. I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as | see how things go

with me. “And | am confident in the Lord that | myself will come soon.

Il. DILIGENT FOR CHRIST

*But | think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and
fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs, For
he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. “indeed he was ill,

and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare
me sorrow upon sorrow.

ill. DRIVEN FOR CHRIST

8Therefore |am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may

be glad and | may have less anxiety. 2Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor

men like him, 3°because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for

the help you could not give me.

STUDY GUIDE

The following supplementary Siucly Guide is designed to enhance your understanding and application of the message.
it is recommended that the guide be conducted in a small group setting such as your bible study Connect Group.

OBJECTIVE::
TO START SPIRITUALLY “BREAKING GROUND” BY EXEMPLIFYING A DISCIPLE WHO IS
DEPENDABLE, DILIGENT, AND DRIVEN FOR CHRIST.

SYNOPSIS::
In Paul's letter to the Church of Philippi during his incarceration, he emphasized the deep

importance of love as a key to rootedness in Christ. In Philippians 2:149-30, he continued his letter
further by praising the heart and resolve of his ministry partners, Timothy and Epaphroditus, and
how their actions played greatly in encouraging him through his situation.

INTRODUCTORY QUESTION::

notComment on this statement: “Trustworthiness is shown in a person's actions and just their

words.”

APPLICATION QUESTIONS::
1. Read verses 19-24. What were the characteristics of Timothy that made Paul so confident

about him?

2. Read verses 25-27. What were the characteristics of Epaphroditus?
a. Why would Epaphroditus be “distressed” upon hearing that the Philippians were
aware of his illness?

3. Read verse 28. In your opinion, why did Paul feel it was necessary to send Epaphroditus back
to Philippi?
a. Read verses 29-30. Why do you think Paul instructed the Philippian believers to

honor people like Epaphroditus?

b. What did Paul mean when he said in verse 30, ‘make up for the help you could not

give me”?

BUILDING DEEP: BREAKING GROUND

Imagine a tree without its roots. Or a building without a solid foundation, A strong wind blows, and that
structure falters, In our spiritual lives, a solid foundation is needed to keep us firmly rooted in Christ, But,
where to start? First, we must break ground,

The key to a strong foundation begins with the act of Building Deep, We need to dig deep to discover what

with -it means to be anchored and rooted in Christ joy and gladness, The Apostle Paul through his writings

-found in the Book of Philippians shows us how love is the means to this rootedness in Christ, which helps

us develop a sense of joy and unwavering commitment to the faith, no matter what the circumstances may

lo}

Continue your journey with us as we Break Ground together to discover the deep things about God, with the
aim to cultivate a stronger relationship with Him!
