Ce PARSON TO PERSON

| "A LIVING HOPE"

>= ”“ “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His
great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through
ote j
the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)
c<9
4 0 ne morning, my wife and I were driving along Katipunan
WS when a young girl (around 8-years old) approached our car at
a stop light selling rags at 10 pieces for *100. I looked at the
7“ kid with great compassion, trying to sell rags for her food or
allowance for school. I told her, “I will give you #100 for just 5 rags
.J q=v}i ‘ so that you can sell and earn more.” She looked straight into my
.\
,| eyes and said, “Thank you sir, God bless!” When I heard that, my
’ : heart was moved and, immediately, I gave her an additional *50.
\aywoes She technically did not deserve the additional money, for no added
.| : sales were made. However, I was so moved with generosity at that
moment, and my heart compelled me to give!
}
\ That is how God views us! We are born again - not because of what we
;\ deserve on account of our sinful nature - but because of God’s great
love, compassion, and mercy for us! His act of salvation for us was
more than just paying the price for redemption, but above and
beyond into glory! Understanding God’s great mercy means that
you know you’ve been born unto unblemished hope. And despite
being undeserving, God is there giving you a new lease on life!

i" The understanding of all this changes everything about you; the way

rs>' | you talk, the way you treat each other. It changes the conversations
around the dinner table. It changes the manner of which board

meetings are held, and so on and so forth. Thinking about this in the

context of our church, when everyone has this kind of undeserving

Yr| iio mindset, it changes everything about us and makes us truly utter
the words “thank you” genuinely and sincerely for everything God
BSj x. : has done for us.

Being thankful for this mercy is only relevant, however, once we

ee have made the decision to trust in Christ Jesus! When we choose to
' declare Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes into our
being, changing the old, and replacing it with the new. We die to

t ourselves in order to accept the new creation. Just like the

; resurrection which happened two thousand years ago, being united

with Christ in death allows us to come back renewed like Him! Romans 6:5

says, “If we have been united to Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united

to Him in a resurrection like His.” And thus, being united with Christ, His death counts as

your own and rids you of sin. In the same likeness, His life counts as yours, allowing you to

inherit eternal life.

Without God’s mercy and the miracle of His resurrection, we cannot experience new birth and eternal life.
BUT, because of the mercy of God; totally undeserved, and because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are

born again and assured of eternal life. This is the miracle that authenticates the glory of Christ in the gospel!

BREAKING GROUND OFFAITH

SERMON 8: DIGGING DEEPER

Rev. Mau Rivera / Philippians 3:1-11

BYSTART BREAKING GROUND BEING SPIRITUALLY MINDFUL OF WORTHLESS

TRIUMPHS, FOCUSED ON WORTHWHILE TREASURES, AND DRIVEN TO BE CHRIST-LIKE

|. BE SPIRITUALLY MINDFUL

‘Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you
again, and it is a safeguard for you. ?Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those
mutilators of the flesh. 3For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God,

who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh -

ll. BEAWARE OF WORTHLESS TRIUMPHS

4though | myself have reasons for such confidence.

If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, | have more: ‘circumcised on
the eighth day, of the people of israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to
the law, a Pharisee; °as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.

lil. BE FOCUSED ON WORTHWHILE TREASURES

7But whatever was to my profit | now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, | consider
everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for
whose sake | have lost ail things. | consider them rubbish, that | may gain Christ 9and be found in
Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through
faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.

IV. BE DRIVEN TO BE CHRIST-LIKE

701 want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His
sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, “and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from

the dead.

STUDY GUIDE

SYNOPSIS::
In Paul's letter to the Church of Philippi during his incarceration, he emphasized the deep

importance of love as a key to rootedness in Christ. In Philippians 3:4-11, he continued his letter
further by encouraging them not to put all their confidence in their own achievemenis, but rather
on Christ, knowing the value of His greatness.

INTRODUCTORY QUESTION:

Share some of your greatest accomplishments.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS::
1. Read verse 1. Why do you think Paul repeated what he already mentioned in his earlier letters

about his warnings against false teachers?

a. Inverse 2, Paulused “dogs”, “men who do evil”and “mutilators of the flesh" to describe
a person to watch out for. To whom exactly was he referring and what did he mean

by the description?

b. In verse 3, Paul refers to himself and the Church of Philippi as “we who are the
circumcision’. What did he rnean by that?

2. Read verses 4-6. What does “confidence in the flesh" mean?
a. For what reason would Paul need to “boast” about his worldly accomplishments?

Paul3. Read verses 7-8a. How did view his earthly accomplishments, and what did he view as a

more worthwhile accomplishment?

4. Read verses 10-11. Why is the resurrection of Christ very important to Christianity?

a. What did Paul mean when he desired for the ‘fellowship of sharing in Christ's

sufferings” and what drove him to be committed to this?

Jesus - during His earthly ministry - prioritized prayer over all things. He showed the importance of prayer as a means to discern
God's will, to commune, to remain in His presence, and to be empowered to do the impossible... all for His glory!
Join us as we continue our monthly church-wide prayer meetings on Saturday, May 4th to strengthen our rootedness with God

and remain sheltered in His presence!

BUILDING DEEP: BREAKING GROUND

Imagine a tree without its roots. Or a building without a solid foundation. A strong wind blows, and that
structure falters. In our spiritual lives, a solid foundation is needed to keep us firmly rooted in Christ. But,
where to start? First, we must break ground,

The key to a strong foundation begins with the act of Building Deep, We need to dig deep to discover what
- withit means to be anchored and rooted in Christ joy and gladness, The Apostle Paul - through his writings

found jn the Book of Philippians shows us how love is the means to this rootedness in Christ, which helps

us develop a sense of joy and unwavering commitment to the faith, no matter what the circumstances may

be,

Continue your journey with us as we Break Ground together to discover the deep things about God, with the
aim to cultivate a stronger relationship with Him!
