I WOULD FIRST LIKE TO SAY that I am excited you are interested
in becoming a member of our church, Subic Bay Community of Faith!
I commend your desire to become an active member of a local Church
body, and I am thrilled that you have considered SBCF as your
destination for that.
To help you along your journey to becoming an official member of
SBCF, our Church Council has prepared this manual to help guide you
along your path. The purpose of church membership is to protect the
integrity of the doctrine and teachings of our church based on the
Bible, and to keep the unity of believers by being one in the mission
and vision God has given us. As a result of this unity, we will be able
to build up the bedy of Christ together with love, excitement, proper
humility and accountability. Membership at SBCF has its privileges,
but with that comes responsibilities as well.
However, the journey overall will be an exciting one; one that will help
strengthen your relationship with Christ Jesus, leading you to practical
ways to be more and more intimate with Him! So, go ahead and take
your time to read what is in this manual, and we hope to officially
welcome you soon into our SBCF family!
In Christ,
Rev. Maurice Rivera
Lead Pastor

THE UNIVERSAL BODY OF CHRIST
When we receive Jesus Christ as Savior, we are born again into God’s family and God
lives in us by the Holy Spirit John 1:12-13). By baptism with the Holy Spirit -- that is,
when the Spirit is given to live permanently in us -- we become part of the universal body
of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). Every born again Christian, regardless of which group
he belongs to, is a member of the true and universal Body of Christ.
THE LOCAL CHURCH
It is not enough for one to become a member of the universal church by Spirit baptism.
One must also become part of a local church, which is the visible Body of Christ in a
particular geographical location. Subic Bay Community of Faith is an example of a local
church. A believer ought to be part of the local church. We are not called to isolate
ourselves and become “lone ranger” Christians. We are called to be part of God’s visible
and local family. After partaking in water baptism, a professed Christian can then choose
to become a member of SBCF. This is done by completing the membership class.
Although we do not have anything in the Bible that suggests that the early
Christians had to fill out application forms, the principle herein is “order”.
God is not a God of disorder. Throughout the Bible, we see that the Lord
desired everything to be done in an orderly manner. Having an application
process is in keeping with the principle of “order”. Having your membership
application form in the church records will serve as helpful reference in the
future should you transfer to another church locally or abroad. Your
application form containing personal information is treated with
confidentiality.

REASONS FOR MEMBERSHIP IN A LOCAL CHURCH
What are our reasons for joining a club, a school, or community organization? Our
reasons for joining a local church are similar but much more, because of the spiritual
aspect of life. In a club, people are socially related. In a church, all believers are
Spiritually related. What are some reasons for church membership?
1. For Fellowship. Read Acts 2:41-42. What were some of the activities that
the believers took part in?
We could only engage in these activities meaningfully in the context ofa church, i.e.
an assembly of believers.
2. For Identification. In the church, we identify ourselves with Christ and other
believers and we hold things in common. Read Ephesians 4:4-7. What are the
elements we have in common with other Christians?
3. For Involvement. In the context ofa local church, we are able to express and
use the gifts the Lord has given us to benefit others. Read Ephesians 4:11-13. Why
did God give the church gifts and gifted men? (v.12)
4. For Discipleship. If we desire to grow and become like Christ, we need
other people to teach us, encourage us, equip us, and build us up. This is what we
call a discipleship relationship. It is possible and permissible to have a discipleship
relationship outside a church setting. But, the example of the early church
Christians in the Book of Acts make it clear that they devoted themselves to
activities that were done in a church context. (Acts 2:42-47)
5. For Demonstrating Submission. When we apply for membership in an
organization, we do not set the terms. We follow the requirements. Likewise, in a
church, we show our submission by following the requirements for membership.
(Hebrews 13:17)

// OUR STORY: BRIEF HISTORY OF SBCF
Subic Bay Community of Faith started in the summer of 2010 when a vision of church
planting in Subic Bay Freeport Zone was laid in the hearts of John Phillip and Mei Chua
Chiaco. Under the leadership of Dr. and Mrs. Luis Pantoja, Jr., prayer and planning group
meetings were held in Quezon City and Subic Bay.
On August 6, 2010, the core group gathered for a prayer meeting and vision casting at
Edgewater, Triboa Bay, SBFZ. The core group, guest pastors, and friends prayed and
planned to launch the new work in September 2010. Committed to pursuing the
direction, the vision that was born from the heart of God did not deter the passion of the
group to start the new church even as visionary-leader Dr. Luis Pantoja graduated to
glory on September 6, 2010 while attending a Pastor’s Retreat in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah,
Malaysia.
On September 18, 2010, an evangelistic event dubbed “Matters of the Heart” led by Dr.
Manuel and Grace Chua Chiaco was held, inviting leaders of SBMA as well as other
government leaders and members of the community. The evangelistic event pushed
through with great result, and many of the people who made the decision to follow
Christ, committed to be part of SBCF.
The following Sunday, on September 25, 2010, thirty-five people met for the first
worship service at the former Triboa Bay Offices. Shortly thereafter, Rev. Noel Pantoja,
assisted by his loving wife Jenny Pantoja, was called to be the lead pastor-church planter
of the new team. The group, with new contacts from SBFZ, Hermosa, Bataan, and
Olongapo City, decided to meet every Sunday evening for prayer, fellowship, and the
study of God’s Word. In order to serve the commuting public and walk-in guests better,
the church moved their worship location to the Central Business District at Korean
Community Church, but later on was blessed by God with a new worship center in Forest
Hills, Binictican Heights, SBFZ. After a year, SBCF registered at the Securities and
Exchange Commission as a Church, and was officially recognized as such by the CBAP
family of Churches in November of 2011. Shortly thereafter, in 2014, Pastor Maurice
Adam Rivera was given the position of Pastor In Charge to lead the spiritual direction of
the church.
The church continued to grow steadily and expanded ministries to cater to the children,
youth, young professionals, and adults of SBFZ. As a Church committed to evangelism
and church planting, SBCF has engaged in numerous outreach activities that benefited
Allp.12 / About SBCF
the surrounding communities. Because of SBCF’s unique location, the Church had also
played host to numerous individual ministry workers, church leadership teams, and
families for retreats, spiritual rejuvenation, and other related ministries.
SBCF recently moved once again from their location at Forest Hills, Binictican to the
Central Business District, striking a ministry partnership with Sister Onnie Lorenzana to
use her Admiral’s Guest House facility along Boardwalk Avenue for the church’s Sunday
worship celebration.
Today, Subic Bay Community of Faith continues to invite and minister holistically to
people of all ages and backgrounds to come join its numerous ministries and enjoy the
privilege of being part of God’s growing family.
// OUR AFFILIATION: CONSERVATIVE BAPTIST
SBCF perpetuates the New Testament Church that Christ established back in the first
century. As a local church, SBCF is a living part of the universal body of Christ as
referred to in | Corinthians 12:13. SBCF cooperates with the Philippine Council of
Evangelical Churches (PCEC), an umbrella organization of churches from different
denominations like Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, Pentecostals, etc. SBCF is a
member of the Conservative Baptist Association of the Philippines (CBAP).
The Conservative Baptists, one of the many Baptist groups all over the world, came to
the Philippines in the '50s and began as a church-planting movement. It grew rapidly
until it organized as an association of churches in 1961. Baptists do not trace their origin
to aman, as do many other denominations. They acknowledge no human founder. They
were given the name “Baptist” only a few centuries ago. However, the beliefs which are
central to Baptists have continued from the days of Jesus Christ and the apostles. These
doctrines have been preserved in the beliefs of faithful men.
It has often been said that Baptists are a people of the Book. That Book is the Bible.
Baptists do not worship the Bible, but they treasure it as the inspired revelation of God's
truth and as the divine record of God's dealing with man.
Baptists believe that the Bible is the only safe and sure guide in religious faith and
practice. Baptists have formed their basic beliefs from the Bible and not from the
declaration of church officials or from creeds formulated by church councils.

// OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH: WHAT WE BELIEVE
1. The Bible is the perfect and authoritative Word of God that teaches us what to
believe and how to live (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
2. God revealed Himself as one God in a trinity of persons - God the Father, God
the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19-20).
3. Jesus Christ is God who is also Man, born of virgin birth, died for our sins, rose
again and ascended into heaven (John 1:1-18, 12 Corinthians 15:3-6; Philippians
2:5-11).
4. The Holy Spirit is God who dwells in every Christian and helps us to pray,
serve God, and become more like Jesus and ensures us of eternal life (Romans
8:14-16, 26-39).
5. Angels are unseen creatures who serve God and His people. Satan and demons
are fallen angels (Isaiah 14:12-17; Hebrews 1:6:14).
6. Man was created male and female by God and imprinted with His image.
Mankind sinned and became separated from God and was unable to gain eternal life
away from Him (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 5:12-14),
7. Salvation is God’s offer of forgiveness, a new nature, and eternal life to those
who believe that Jesus Christ alone is Savior and Lord. It is a free gift of God
secured eternally by the Holy Spirit, and available for all those who believe.
(Ephesians 1:13-14; 2:1-10; 1 John 5:11-13).
8. The Church is a community that includes all Christians united by the Holy
Spirit and fulfills the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations under the
Lordship of Christ united in one body (Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Corinthians 12:12-31).
9. The End Times begin when Jesus Christ returns to reign on Earth and reward
God’s people with life with Him forever (1 John 14:1-3; Revelation 21:1-8).
10. Civil Government is ordained by God for the good of society. Christians
should pray for and pay taxes to the government, but the church and government
should remain separate (Romans 13:1-7; |Timothy 2:1-2).

All About SBCF / p.17
// BAPTISM
The Greek word for baptizo literally means “to immerse, dip, or plunge under water.”
The Lord Jesus was baptized by John “in the Jordan,” and He came “up out of the water”
(Mark 1:9-10). On the other hand, there are other words for “sprinkle” and “pour”, but
not the word baptizo.
In Matthew 28;19-20, we read the command of Christ (popularly known as The Great
Commission) to make disciples and to baptize them. The New Testament pattern ts clear;
first, make disciples; second, baptize these disciples (Acts 2:38, 41; 8:12; 9:18; 10:48:
16;14-15).
/// THE IMPORTANCE OF BAPTISM
1. Itis a command. (Matthew 28:19-20)
2. We follow the example of Christ and His disciples who were baptized
themselves. (Matthew 3:16)
3. It was practiced by the first century church led by the direct disciples of
Christ. (Acts 2:38; 8:36-38; 10:47-48)
4. Itis arequirement for church membership. (Acts 2:40-42)
/// THE MEANING OF BAPTISM
Baptism is a physical expression of a spiritual reality in a Christian’s life. It is a rite
that serves as a public declaration of one’s faith in Jesus Christ. In short, baptism is
a symbol.
i. Baptism is a symbol of a Christian’s identification with Christ in His death,
burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). It is a symbol of death to sin and
new life in Christ (Colossians 2:12).
2. Baptism is a symbol of a Christian’s entry to the universal body of Christ,
that is, the church (1 Corinthians 12:13). The believer’s “Baptism with the
p18 / All About SBCF
Holy Spirit” happens at the moment a person believes in Christ as Savior
and Lord, and permanently associates the person with the Body of Christ.
3. Baptism is simply a symbolic portrayal, and not the means of salvation.
Unlike repentance and acceptance of Christ, Baptism is not necessary for
salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10). Rather, the biblical record teaches us that
Baptism may be an expression of conversion. Since Baptism was ordained
by Christ, it is properly understood as an ordinance (a major religious
practice) rather than a sacrament (requirements for salvation).
/// THE SUBJECTS OF BAPTISM: WHO MUST BE BAPTIZED?
Baptism is only practiced by a person who has openly confessed to be a believer in
Christ Jesus. Nowhere in the New Testament does it offer a clear case of an
individual being baptized before expressing their faith in Christ.
1. The Lord commanded that believers (genuine Christians) must be baptized.
To be baptized is a personal decision of the believer. Since infants cannot
decide for themselves, they are not to be baptized. (Acts 2:38)
2. A person must first repent of his sins and receive Christ as his personal
Savior and Lord before he can be baptized. (Acts 16:14-15)
/// THE MODE OF BAPTISM
The Greek word baptizo originally and properly describes the process by which a
person or object is completely immersed in water and then withdrawn from it again.
In Romans 6:3-5, Paul appears to be contending that there is a significant
connection between how Baptism is administered (one is lowered into the water and
then raised out of it) and what it symbolizes (death to sin and new life in Christ).
Immersion symbolizes burial, while emergence symbolizes resurrection.
In light of this, Subic Bay Community of Faith administers Baptism by immersion
since it fully preserves and accomplishes the meaning of Baptism.
All About SBCF / p.19
// COMMUNION
1. While Baptism is the initiatory rite, Communion - or the Lord’s Supper - is
the continuing rite of the visible church.
2. Itmay be defined simply as a rite which Christ Himself established for the
church to practice as a commemoration of His death. (Matthew 26:26-28;
Mark 14-22-24; Luke 22-19-20)
3. The act of taking the bread and the cup is a dramatization of the gospel; a
graphic display of what Christ’s death accomplished. It points backward to His
death as the basis of our salvation. Thus, like Baptism, Communion is an
important symbol of the believer’s salvation in Christ. “For whenever you eat
this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”
(1 Corinthians 11:26)
4. In addition to having a correct understanding of what Christ accomplished
and having a vital relationship with Him, those who participate in Communion
must get along with one another (1 Corinthians 11:18,20-21). Disregard for
fellow Christians and for the church is a contradiction of the Lord’s Supper.
Hence, it is much a symbol of the present vital fellowship of believers with the
Lord and with one another.
5. Communion is also a proclamation of future fact: it looks forward to the
Lord’s second coming. Paul wrote: “For whenever you eat this bread and drink
this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26)
6. The tendency of our beliefs to be forgotten was one of the reasons Christ
instituted communion. It should therefore be observed often enough to prevent
long gaps between times of reflection upon these truths which it signifies, but
not so frequently as to go through motions without really thinking about the
meaning. At SBCF, we observe communion every first Sunday of each month.
