REVIEWING 17
FISCAL YEAR
Academy Patrons and Donors, CAPTION HERE
This year my wife and I welcomed our son Theo to the world. This
life-changing event has put a lot into focus for me. I think a lot about the city I
want my son to grow up in and I think a lot about what will enhance his
childhood, his education, and his quality of life. I know that a thriving arts
center is crucial to building a community where I waCnAtPtToIOraNisHeEmREy son. Studies
conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts’ O ce of Research and
Analysis found that Theo is four times more likely to be recognized for
academic achievement and three times more likely to win an award for school
attendance if he actively participates in the arts. Having a strong arts center
isn’t important to just Theo, but to all of the children in our community.
We set out every day to fulfill our mission of serving our community through
arts and culture. This means serving ALL of our community and making sure
that everyone and anyone can participate and benefit from our activities. Our
$10 Riverfront Park Concert tickets, our extensive scholarship program, and
our numerous outreach activities are in the DNA of this organization and are
crucial in making the Greater Lynchburg community a place where all our
children can thrive, where as adults our lives are enriched, and where all of us
are proud to call home.

EDUCATION

“In the end, the hope is that each child who comes through any Academy arts program leaves with not just their new
masterpiece, but a newfound appreciation for art and learning.”

-Evan Smith, Director of Community Outreach

Through our education programs, members of our community can participate and develop their skills in drawing, painting,
pottery, animation, creative writing, theatre, music, and so much more. While our o erings are often engaged by
experienced artists, some students may be experiencing these activities for the first time.

“These students learn to self express, collaborate, and form bonds with individuals from all over the Greater Lynchburg
area, many of whom come from di erent places and backgrounds. These students are being equipped with
compassion, understanding, and empathy, and will become citizens who will move beyond our current discourse
which is often divisive and toxic. I can’t think of a time when engagement in arts education was more important,”
says Geo rey Kershner, Executive Director.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Classes and workshops at the Academy Center of the Arts help our community discover their creative potential.
Through meaningful, quality arts experiences, the Academy served more than 950 people of all ages and skill levels
in 131 classes and workshops last year.

While we still o er traditional fine arts classes, our biggest areas of growth were with weekend workshops. The Art
Studio smelled heavenly after our sold out Bath Bomb Making class, and a new twist to an old technique proved fun
in Creative Lettering. The seasonal Raku workshops in our Pottery Studio consistently filled, and families lined up
for our Family Saturday Clay Day workshops.

Our highly-qualified teachers, artists, and instructors brought professional experience in their art forms and
exceptional teaching standards, which resulted in student learning and growth.

“ My name is Elori Smile, I am twelve, and I have been taking classes at the Academy Center of the Arts for
seven years. I started out in pottery by hand sculpting, forming simple shapes and whimsical creatures.
Later, I experimented with making baskets and parts for mobiles. Last summer, I took my first wheel
throwing class. My teachers were extremely helpful and showed me many techniques to develop my
clay pieces.

Some things about pottery I had to learn the hard way. Once, a piece I was making slipped out
of my hands and landed upside down on the floor with a loud splat. Thankfully, with a little
coaxing, I managed to restore it to its former shape. From then on, I was way more careful
handling my pieces. Another time, my dipping was hurried and sloppy and my color
choices failed to please the eye. Now, I take much more time in deciding how to
combine colors and how to hold and dip my pieces.

MER LEARNING LOSS CAMP During my first pottery classes, I tried to make as many pieces as possible, not
caring about symmetry or making them nice to touch. This year, I have
learned to appreciate designs that are pleasing to the eye and friendly to
the hand. With Ted's encouragement and help from my teachers Kari

and Rebecca, I have managed to create pieces of which I am very

proud.

YOUTH CAMPS

YOUTH CAMP DATA When school is out, the Academy bursts at its seams with youth camps!

- Jay Parker, COO of Central Virginia YMCA

“From nurturing art teachers like Rosalie Day White who engaged their artistic potential, to fun
pottery classes making holiday ornaments as gifts and keepsakes, my daughters have enjoyed every
class and experience they’ve had at the Academy. Their favorite has been the theater productions,
both coming to watch others perform, and participating in youth theater productions. Through
these experiences my daughters have made new friends, had fun, and worked with talented
directors that take pride in their art and the children they teach.”

ART GALLERIES

The Academy Galleries act as a forum for local and regional artists to exhibit their work, engage the community in shared
dialogue, and showcase diversity in form. Fiscal year 2016/17 was very successful in both number of community
members engaged and in total sales, doubling the amount sold in the previous fiscal year.

FEATURED EVENTS

In November, the gallery experienced record attendance with a retrospective exhibition of the late Anne Adams
Robertson Massie’s paintings, curated by her daughter Anne Harris Massie Winstead. Anchored by pieces from her own
collection, Anne obtained loans of almost 150 pieces from her brother Will Massie, father Bill Massie, and from dozens
of local collectors. In memory of Mrs. Massie’s passion for the arts and dedication to the Academy, the Massie family
donated five paintings from their private collections that brought in more than $16,000 for the Academy.

Another important exhibition entitled “Eleven Emerging Artists” was co-curated by Elizabeth Stroud and Laura
Morgan in December 2016. This exhibition brought in sales over $31,000. It was the first time that the
Academy invited guest curators.

HIGHLIGHTED EVENTS

In addition to our educational o erings, the Academy also hosted over 90 events, stage
performances, and outreach activities in FY 2016/17. Below are a few of our highlighted events.

COMMUNITY THROUGH THEATRE
In May, the Academy brought Lorraine Hansberry’s classic ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ to the
Warehouse Theatre and simultaneously launched Community Through Theatre, a
program led by a steering committee of local actors and theatre lovers that aims to
bridge divides and build community.

This landmark drama was one of the first stories on Broadway to examine
African-American life on the cusp of the civil rights era and was a perfect
piece for the program’s launch.

“I think it has a lot of importance, especially with everything BRAD BATEMAN AND CYNDI LEE CHOOSE

- Walter Heilig, Actor in ‘A Raisin in the Sun’

The Riverfront Park Concert Series kicked o its first year in June 2017. The series set out to bring high
quality, national, regional, and local music acts to our community at an a ordable price.

The concert series featured four events, including a free concert with the Lynchburg Symphony
Orchestra and national touring acts: George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic, Blues
Traveler, and The Lone Bellow, all at a $10 entry fee.

The concerts played to nearly 11,000 people and brought a new level of cultural activity to
our growing downtown.

YMCA SUMMER ARTS WEEK
Through the support of the W.C. English Foundation, the Academy Center of the Arts
launched our first Summer Arts Week, in partnership with the Altavista Area YMCA.

From June 19th through June 23rd, over 250 campers, ages four to thirteen,
took visual and performing arts classes with Academy Center of the Arts and
Kid Pan Alley instructors. Through this program, campers were able to
participate and develop their skills in drawing, creative writing, drama,
and improvisation.

JAD ABUMRAD

Through a collaboration with Dunbar Middle School, the Academy Center of the Arts supported the school’s
annual Black History Month celebration last February by sponsoring an in-school performance of the
Washington, D.C. dance troupe Step Afrika!.
The famed Step Afrika!, founded in 1994, was the first professional dance company dedicated to the
dance tradition of stepping. Thought of as one of the top ten African American dance companies in the
United States, the company blends percussive dance styles traditionally practiced by African
American fraternities and sororities.
More than a dance show, their performance integrated storytelling, songs, humor, and audience
participation. Step Afrika! was a huge hit with the Dunbar Middle School community.

THE HISTORIC THEATR

The historic Theatre restoration project and construction of the adjacent lobby building has been steadily progressing
over FY 2016/17. The project is about 40% complete and is on schedule for a December 2018 opening.

The Main Street façade is undergoing a major facelift with the old damaged stucco removed, masonry repaired and new
stucco being applied. Original colors will be duplicated and the exterior decorative components, including molded
plaster elements, ornamental balusters, columns with cast capitals, parapet, and cornices will either be salvaged and
repaired or duplicated.

The Theatre’s interior is now protected by a new roof and reinforced structural elements. Additional progress includes
re-built floor supports and underlayment in the orchestra level and first balcony, cut duct openings, poured concrete
basement floors, and creation of a masonry orchestra pit. Interior wall framing has been erected at the basement and
sub-basement levels of the stage house and drywall installation is in process. HVAC ductwork is being installed and
much of the plumbing and electric is roughed in.

Construction of the adjacent lobby is also progressing. The foundation is completed and the HVAC
units are in place. The lobby floor has been poured and steel framing is beginning. The structure is
scheduled to be under roof in January.

On November 2, 2017, the Academy Center of the Arts completed a historic rehabilitation tax
credit transaction with Twain Financial Partners of St. Louis, Missouri that will provide the
Academy with $9.7 million of funding needed to complete the restoration of the Academy of
Music Theatre.
The transaction also includes bridge loans provided both by Twain and a partnership of
three local community banks: Bank of the James, First National Bank and Select Bank.
