Growing up, we met our best friend in a weaving class. We found our community in pottery classes when we were new to Lynchburg. We
learned through acting classes that every person is unique in their own way. We created audio-visual moments in performances that
connected performers and audience in magical ways. Our mother taught us the joy of seeing the world through painting. Our father taught
us that Shakespeare has great lessons about humanity; what brings us together and what tears us apart. We worked with hospital patients
creating art works while they endured weeks of hospitalization; a woman discovering for the first time in her adult life that she had a
talent for painting while receiving a bone marrow transplant and young boy of 5 who escaped the drudgery of treatment by drawing
dinosaurs endlessly.
We are the Academy Center of the Arts sta– and w e come to work everyday intent on connecting our community through the
power of the arts because we have all personally experienced its power. Whether building friendships, instilling understanding
and empathy, or healing either emotional or physical wounds, the arts are a powerful tool for creating a healthy and vibrant
community. The greater Lynchburg region is our home and we are dedicated to serving you everyday, connecting you with
one another, building a better and stronger community.

EDUCATION

"Arts education is inherently collaborative and that is what we love about our class o˜ erings at the Academy. Whether childr
building life long friendships through the staging of a theatrical production or an adult is learning to paint for the first time fro
seasoned instructor, our classes bring people together, building bonds through the act of imaginative creation."

- Geo˜r ey Kershner, Executive Director
Through our education programs, members of our community can acquire and hone skills in drawing, painting, pottery,
animation, creative writing, theatre, music, and a plethora of other o˜ erings. Within this experience of engaging with and
creating art, people of all backgrounds can come together to craft relationships.
“Students in our classes often form lasting bonds with other students who possess the same passion and common
interests,” says Kelly Posenauer, Director of Education. “They support and befriend each other in classes and camps
and then take that relationship into our community.”

YOUTH CAMPS

During the summer months, the Academy o˜ ers youth art and theatre camps for students ages 3 - 18! Last year, the academy o
26 summer camps. Through these programs, we served 851 youth and provided them a space to learn new skills, grow as indivi
and make lasting connections with other students.

“Encore Youth Theatre gave me a safe space to turn to and allowed me to better express myself. If it weren’t for the Academy,
their sta˜ , and the programs, I most likely would have given up on theatre, and now, I’m majoring in musical theatre at
college.”

- Hattiebelle Spigener, Class of 2018

“The Academy’s programs have brought my [teenage daughter] out of her shell and given her a feeling of purpose O
and belonging. We are so grateful for the opportunities she has had and look forward to many more.” C

- Edie Jones, Mother of Youth Theatre Program Student
“I’ve been with the Academy since it was named the Academy of Fine Arts. I watched myself grow through
the arts programs it has o˜ ered me. It changed my personality. I was a quieter kid, I enjoyed my school work
and had few friends. Now through the Academy I’ve met kids from all districts and counties across
Lynchburg. I’ve become an extrovert, and have now done more plays than will fit on my audition sheets.”

- Elizabeth Plucker, Class of 2024

I’ve always wanted to be involved in Encore Youth Theatre but I never did because I never had the
money to participate. When I found out about the scholarships o˜ ered I thought that this was
finally my chance to be a part of the program. The scholarship helped me so much and I learned
a lot within the program and I also had fun and made long lasting friendships within the
community.

Kenny Weinfurtner, a professor at Central Virginia Community College, has been an instructor at the Academy Center of the Arts
for years. Kenny has taught numerous classes of various mediums at the Academy. His most popular classes are drawing and
painting where he is able to teach both beginner and advanced student simultaneously. Kenny has even taught darkroom
photography during the summer for youth in middle and high school.
Our Young Potters class is another opportunity for youth to engage in a unique form of art, working independently but
alongside each other.
“I like Mrs. Glaze’s Young Potter’s class because she is very patient and kind and helps everybody to do their best. I
love her class.” - Bella, Young Potters Student

A LETTER FROM CVACL

“Once again I would like to thank the Academy for your continued relationship with our seniors
in our congregate site program. Several of our site managers have shared with me the
excitement that pervades the room when they begin to unwrap the treasures made by the
site participants. As one site manager described it, “Their eyes light up and their smiles
spread across their faces when they see the finished object of their labor!”

We frequently hear the question asked, “When can we go back?”

It is wonderful to watch those who wrestle with arthritis taking such care as they
work on their piece of pottery. They carefully, and sometimes painfully, draw
their designs and/or paint them on their pottery. It is a joy to see how proud
each person is of her/his accomplishment.

Thank you and your sta˜ f or your patience and caring.”

demy galleries serve as a space where local and regional artists can exhibit their work and where art can be the focal point of
tful conversations and new connections. Fiscal year 2018 was very successful, with an increase in both on-site showings as well
hibits at o˜-sit e satellite galleries located throughout the community.

EATURED EVENTS
“Heritage High School visual arts students examined the history of African-American life in Lynchburg and Central Virginia

which resulted in an art show in the lobby of the Warehouse Theatre. The focus of the project was to celebrate the
community and to illuminate the people and their achievements. The goal of the project was to have the students identify
with the people they chose to portray and in doing so, find their way to a newer sense of compassion and understanding
of others,” says Jon Roark, Art Teacher at Heritage High School.

Frankie Slaughter, a Lynchburg native now living in Richmond, showed her mixed media paintings in the Ann White
Academy Gallery in March of 2018. At that month’s First Friday members of the Lynchburg community were able to
meet Frankie and discuss her artistic process and creative perspective.

HIGHLIGHTED EVENTS

In addition to our educational o˜ erings, the Academy also brought over 27,000 community members together to experience 15
events, stage performances, and outreach activities in FY 2018. Below are a few of our highlighted events.

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND
In June and July, 29 local high school actors, ages 14 – 18, gathered for the annual Encore Youth Theatre camp with the task of
producing their own interpretation of the Tony-Award winning musical Once on This Island. The cast was composed of
students from 10 area schools and homeschooled students.

MAVIS STAPLES J
834 community members of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds celebrated the integration and re-opening of S
the restored Historic Academy Theatre. On December 6, 2018, patrons heard remarks from astronaut Leland Melvin
and Lynchburg’s first African-American female Mayor Treney Tweedy, and watched as various individuals were
honored for their commitment to a diversity and creating an inclusive community. Attendees were also treated to
performances by the Diamond Hill Baptist Church Choir, Devon Gilfillian, and the legendary singer and civil rights
activist Mavis Staples.

On December 13, 2018, over 500 local middle and high school music students visited the Historic Academy Theatre
to listen to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra sound check prior to their performance that evening. The visit was
followed by a closed Q&A session with four Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performers who shared their
backgrounds, experiences, and advice with the young musicians in the room.

“It was great for kids to see people who look just like them being successful doing what they’re
doing. That to me was worth the whole day.”
- Russell Pawlas, E.C. Glass High School Band Director
“It’s just a really amazing moment to see students of all colors and creeds be able to
experience this together. This [was] really a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some
of these kids.”
- Derrick Brown, Dunbar Middle School Principal

built a sense of community and long lasting relationships during their time together.

BRIDGES RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTER PARTNERSHIP

Many of the child ren in the Brid ges Resid ential Treatment Center program
don’t have regular access to traditional art classes or arts education. When
the Academy proposed a 6-week partnership with their program, the
Brid ges sta˜ read ily agreed to the opportunity to have their
students participate.

018 “The atmosphere allows our children to relax, learn and
have fun,” said Dee Rainey, Bridges Residential
Treatment Center Sta˜ . “The families of our
students and our Sta˜ ha ve also enjoyed
being a part of the experience at the
Academy.”

BRIDGES RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTER POTTERY PROJECTS

Lynchstock Music Festival was held on Saturd ay, October 20, 2018 in Downtown Lynchburg’s
Riverfront Park. This event brought over 100 performers, artists, and vendors together to present
a day-long music festival that attracted concertgoers from all backgrounds to celebrate music,
art, and community.
Over half of the attendees traveled from area colleges and universities. Lynchstock provided
an opportunity for concert goers to experience and engage with the culture and o˜ erings
of Downtown Lynchburg, some of whom never had before.

THE HISTORIC THEATR

GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS COME THROUGH GREAT COLLABORATION
At the Academy, we believe that great accomplishments come through collaboration. The December 2018 reopening of the Hi
Academy Theatre is evidence of this truth.

We are immensely proud of the aesthetic and physical beauty of our Historic Academy Theatre, but are even prouder of the p
that lead to the reconstruction and reopening of this spectacular performance space. That path was a path of collaboration;
collaboration over many years and by many committed individuals and entities who shared the vision of what the Academy
could again mean for our community. Individual donors, area corporate partners, the City of Lynchburg, the State of
Virginia, and the Federal Government all participated in funding the project. The restoration process itself was an
incredible joint e˜ ort of multiple designers, contractors, and our sta˜ and boar d.

Our community made this great feat of restoration possible through joint e˜ orts across the public and private sector.
This performance space stands as a monument to the power of working together towards a common goal.

A PLACE TO CONNECT THROUGH SHARED EXPERIENCE
One of the great powers of the arts is its ability to strengthen communities by providing opportunities to
engage in shared experiences. Having a theatre of this size, with its historic significance and physical
beauty, is an incredible tool to help us reach our goals of bringing all facets our community together.

Its architecture, performance history, and downtown location make the Historic Theatre something
truly special. People are drawn to spaces that are unique and intriguing, and our theatre is certainly
that. With this new facility, we can use the power of performance to create meaningful connections.

“Charlottesville Ballet is honored to be resid ent d ance company at the Acad emy. This incred ible THE CHARLOTTESVILLE B
partnership helped us to collaborate with key arts organizations like the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra The Nutcracker
and Cantate Youth & Children's Choir. for our performances of The Nutcracker, which brought music,
voice, and dance together in the Historic Academy Theatre to celebrate the holiday season with two
completely sold out shows for the citizens of Lynchburg.”
