Happy New Year from the
Sangamo Club Board

On behalf of the Sangamo Club Board of Directors, I would like to wish all Club
members a very happy and prosperous New Year! My name is Keith Sias and I am
currently the Vice President of the Sangamo Club Board of Directors. Professional-
ly, I have been a lobbyist for the Illinois Credit Union League for 25 years and have
been a Club member for most of those years.
Over the years I have used the Club to host dinners, receptions and other spe-
cial events with members of the General Assembly as well as other friends and
colleagues. I have also utilized the “reciprocal” benefits of the Club during my
travels to Chicago and Washington, D.C. I encourage you to take full advantage
of the wide array of benefits available to you as a function of your Sangamo Club
membership.
As the Board of Directors looks towards 2019, we are confronting the challenges
faced by most private clubs throughout the country: a declining membership base
and a diminished revenue stream in our operating budget. In order to address the
long-term financial stability of the Club, the Board of Directors will be seeking
ways to increase both our membership base as well as our net income.
There are several steps that you, as a valued Club member, can take to help maintain
the financial stability of the Club. (1) It is your Club-use it! Chef Joe and his staff
provide excellent service in an outstanding atmosphere for business or personal
dining. Come check out the Club! (2) Tell your friends and colleagues about all of
the great things happening at the Club. We are currently conducting a membership
drive where you and prospective new members can receive incentives for joining
the Club. Please contact Ali Murphy for more information. And (3) Consider using
our meeting rooms and banquet facilities for your special events.
Watch for announcements regarding special new membership events and well as
other activities from your Board of Directors throughout 2019.
Thank you again for your Club membership. Remember, it’s your Club - use it to
take full advantage of your membership and help preserve the Club for the future!

Wishing you health and happiness in the New Year!

Keith Sias

Sara Cordell recently retired from UIS where she taught in Winter Farmers Market
the English Department for fifteen years. After receiving January 19
her PhD from the University of Missouri in 1995, she taught
composition and literature at DePaul University before join- Well-Strung: The Singing String Quartet
ing the UIS English faculty in 2003. At UIS, she developed January 19
courses for the online English program, including required
introductory courses for the English major and courses in her James and the Giant Peach
areas of specialization—Victorian Realism, Gothic literature, January 25-27
the Victorian sensation novel and psychoanalysis and liter-
ature. Dr. Cordell also developed online courses in Science Justin Moore with Riley Green
Fiction and Scandinavian crime novels. In 2007, recognizing January 25
a need among the online majors for greater exposure to the
processes of literary analysis than web discussions could Rent 20th Anniversary Tour
provide, Dr. Cordell began offering students the opportuni- January 30
ty to attend weekly live sessions through web conferencing.
These sessions gave students the chance to ask questions and
to discuss and analyze readings with their teacher and oth-
er students in real time. The sessions proved so popular that
Dr. Cordell continued offering them each semester until her retirement. In 2007, one of her
live sessions was recorded by NPR and featured in its education series. Both prior to and
during her tenure at UIS, Dr. Cordell published articles and gave numerous conferences
papers on the intersection of psychoanalysis and literature. In 2007 and 2009 respectively,
she organized a conference titled The Future of English Studies, which attracted scholars
and academics from all over the Midwest and other regions. While she loved teaching at
UIS, Sara is looking forward to having the time to devote to numerous unfinished writing
projects. The title of her presentation is “The Eternal Return of the Repressed in Jo Nesbo’s
“The Redbreast”. The presentation begins with a brief biography of Jo Nesbo followed by
an overview of Norway’s relationship with Germany during WWII. It then moves on to an
analysis of the novel’s complex structure, the purpose of which is to demonstrate how the
novel implies that the past returns from the future.

member of the month - Dr. Cynthia Sedam

After 40 years in public education, the capstone to Dr. Sedam’s career was serving
as the director of Education for Benedictine University at Springfield from 2011-
2016. From 1999-2010, Cindy was the director of Advanced Academic Services for
the Fort Worth Independent School District in Texas. She directed a variety of pro-
grams that focused on the development of academic talent in all students, includ-
ing magnet schools, Pre-AP and Advanced Placement, AVID, and gifted education.

From 1991-1999, she was the coordinator of gifted and fine arts programs for the
Williamsburg- James City County Public Schools in Virginia. While in Williams-
burg, she was a participant and subsequent Education Chair in Leadership Historic
Triangle and served on the Williamsburg Tercentenary Commission as the chair of
the education committee.

Her passion for teaching and learning developed as an educator in the Spring-
field Public Schools where she taught from 1971-1991. She was a classroom teacher
at Owen Marsh and Iles School. While at Iles, her vision for an elementary gift-
ed program was embraced by principals and teachers alike and became a reality:
first for the Southwest Quadrant and then for the entire district. Mr. Lincoln’s
hometown became her hometown as she developed relationships and fostered community partnerships that
strengthened learning opportunities for all students.
Cindy is a graduate of Texas Christian University with advanced degrees from UIS (Sangamon State) and
the University of Connecticut. She earned her Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Why here? What was it about the Sangamo Club that made you become a member?

Missing favorite restaurants in Williamsburg and Fort Worth, I appreciate the attentiveness and the excel-
lent selections at the Sangamo Club.

Making Memories: What is your greatest memory at the Sangamo Club

I have many wonderful memories of dining here with family and friends: Christmas, Easter, and Mother
Day buffets, Guac Walk! and other theme related nights, use of the private dining areas for guests and special
dinners, and most recently the fun of eating and then decorating a gingerbread house. My favorite memo-
ry was dining one evening in December, seated next to the Christmas Tree, with John Olliver preparing a
delicious seafood meal especially for us. I am grateful for Jim and the warmth and professionalism he has
brought to the Club. I look forward to more people discovering the new and wonderful opportunities avail-
able at the Sangamo Club. I also enjoyed the Christmas Buffet on December 19. It was an excellent event with
a festive spirit and beautiful music!
