The Journey from Grief to Healing
The first reaction to a serious loss is usually a sense of unreality – it didn’t happen – it’s
all a bad dream – I’ll wake up soon. Gradually, both intellectually and emotionally, awareness of
the reality is increased. Perhaps it is because the funeral, the rituals and memorialization helped
to acknowledge that death has occurred and that it has happened to your loved one.
The simplest and most obvious fact about loss is that it hurts. Grief is painful.
Separation pain is experienced most intensely. Feelings can overwhelm you, extreme strange
feelings never experienced before. Anger, guilt, helplessness, anxiety, jealousy, and sadness are
felt in many forms. There is sometimes a fear that control is being lost and a fear that what is
happening is not normal.
Support groups can help you to name your feelings. Feelings are neither right nor wrong.
They simply are. Feelings are neither good nor bad, positive or negative. Feelings are merely
neutral. Group members can often be helpful in naming feelings that they observe in other
members, and it is usually helpful to observe the feelings in others that we can identify with at the
time. The named and accepted feelings can now be expressed and acted upon in appropriate
ways. Sometimes, feelings that are not named, accepted or expressed can prolong the grieving
process.
Loss forever changes our world. It’s now a new environment. An ending has occurred
that demands a new beginning. Before that can happen, a period of transition takes place.
During this time we closely examine what has been lost and what had remained the same. What
has actually changed?
What is new? What experiences, roles, expectations, values, opportunities and dreams
have to be given up? And yes, you even can look to the positive areas of growth due to the major
change.
As we move toward healing we begin to create a cherishable memory. Some have said
that memory is part of God’s gift to us when we experience loss. Memory can be that link of love
that continues between your loved one, yourselves, and your God who loves you very much.
Don’t be afraid of the remembering process. Stories will need to be told and retold until the
memory moves from pain to its healing possibilities. Memories are transformed into internal
images as they are incorporated into your very being.
The Israelites in the biblical image of Exodus may be similar to our experience of grief
and letting go. They had to leave their familiar place. The future was uncertain and the
experience of the desert was painful. They wandered in the wasteland for forty years, all the
while complaining, struggling, hurting and hoping.
Sometimes our grief causes us to have a similar desert experience. Here in the Diocese
of Rockville Centre our hope for you is that you will not allow yourself to be stranded in the desert,
in your own grief. St. Paul assures us: “We were afflicted but not crushed; perplexed but not
driven to despair.” (Corinthians 4:8-10)
We invite you to join your brothers and sisters in faith on the journey towards healing in
these Bereavement Support Groups that are available to you in your parishes, local hospitals and
agencies or coordinated by the Office of Catholic Cemeteries here in the Diocese of Rockville
Centre.
Individual Bereavement Information or Referrals
Should you, or someone you know and care about, need to locate a support group or
counselor in your locality, we invite you to contact our Diocesan Bereavement Coordinator, Elaine
Stillwell, at Voice Mail (516) 334-7990, x 122, leaving your name, phone number and brief
message of what information you need. She will return your call promptly. Or you may wish to e-
mail your concern to her:
[email protected]. Often a call to the Office could also help you to decide the
most appropriate group for you at this time or alert you to the formation of new groups or lectures
to be offered.
“Trust in God at all times, my people. Tell him all your
troubles, for he is our refuge.
Psalm 62:8
The Bereavement Support Group
Bereavement Support Groups have multiple functions.
They are places of:
Empathy…
• To receive positive feedback that the experiences of grief are normal – “I’m not going
crazy.”
• To know that others – “just like me” – have been there too, and have survived.
Acceptance…
• To be encouraged to share – pain, fears and frustrations.
• To be enabled to tell your story – repeatedly.
• To be able to share the physical, emotional and spiritual pain of loss and to be
understood by a caring group of friends.
Safety (Confidentiality)…
• To ask for help and receive encouragement.
• To give to others as they give to you.
• To revive and review memories.
• To receive the strength to let go – to say goodbye.
Growth…
• To test the appropriateness of decisions.
• To find more effective coping strategies.
• To tolerate unanswerable questions.
• To become open to God’s presence in your life.
• To experience God’s love through his Church in the companionship of sisters and
brothers in faith.
About the Facilitators
The Support Groups are facilitated by trained volunteers or professional counselors,
many of whom have participated in various diocesan training programs offered by the Office of
Catholic Cemeteries. Continued facilitator training and skills enhancement seminars are offered
throughout the year, sponsored by the Office of Catholic Cemeteries.
About the Membership
Group membership varies, and the nature of the group is determined by the membership,
facilitator, and the experiences of the group. General Bereavement Groups welcome all losses
while other Support Groups are designed for a particular outreach, e.g. loss of spouse, loss of
child, loss of parent, and perinatal loss. Regardless of the type of group you choose, you will find
a supportive facilitator who will assist you with your entry into the group experience.
About the Meeting Times
Some groups meet weekly, some twice a month, and others are scheduled to meet
monthly. Some meet for 6-10 weeks, twice a year. Some meet all year round; others meet Sept.
to June only. We encourage regular attendance. Do call the Contact phone number to register
and to check the meeting’s time and place in case of last minute changes.
Training Program for Bereavement Ministers
The goal of the training program in the Ministry with the Bereaved is to train parish
ministers so that those who grieve the death of a loved one may know the comfort and care of
God through the embrace of their Church. The Parish Family includes: a grieving community,
those who need to feel God’s love in a time of crisis and pain; and a caring community, those who
feel a need to heed Jesus’ call to bring His love to those who are suffering. The Goal of the
Ministry is that no member of our parish family will grieve alone. The Bereavement Training
Programs focus on: the grief process, communication skills, the art of listening, caring for the
minister, planning a program, setting up support groups, referrals and resources. Call Elaine
Stillwell for details (516) 334-7990, X 122.

BAY SHORE
Beginning Experience. For men and women who know the pain of divorce, separation, or the death of a spouse, a
“Beginning Experience” weekend can be the time for taking much needed steps towards resolution, wholeness, and new
direction. Beginning Experience is an active ministry of divorced, separated, and widowed men and women on Long Island,
designed to be a time of closure on the past and a new beginning in the present. Persons who come should be beyond the
initial feelings of anger and despair which usually follow the loss of one’s spouse. They should be at a point of desiring a
new beginning. They should be ready to make that desire a reality. Weekends are scheduled twice a year: Feb. 13-15,
2004 and Aug. 2004 at Montfort Spiritual Center, Bay Shore. Website: www.portjeff.net/be, $180 fee

Source of Peace
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”
John 14:1
Instill in me the wondrous peace that you have promised.
Ease my aching heart.
Allow me to “let go” of the pain.
Gently lead me forward on this journey.
Open my heart to your all-embracing love.
Calm my fears.
Quiet my anxious heart.
Be the wings that support me when I am overwhelmed.
Fill my emptiness with your serene peace.
Let me feel the safety of your love in my time of need.
Guide me to believe in the future.
Walk with me as my loving companion.
Lead me to a place of serenity.
Elaine E. Stillwell

ELAINE E. STILLWELL, M.A, M.S.
A life-long resident of Rockville Centre, New York, Elaine Stillwell is a graduate of
Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY, with a B.A. in English Literature, and holds masters
degrees, M.A. and M.S. in Counseling and Education from the University of Notre Dame, South
Bend, IN and Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY.
She is a wife, mother of three children, grandmother, educator, author, and lecturer. Her
teaching career guiding elementary children through the wonders of learning spanned thirty-five
years and now she is teaching a new audience, bereaved families.
Following the deaths of her two oldest children, 21 year old Denis and 19 year old Peggy in
the same car accident in 1986, she learned first hand about the roller-coaster ride of grief and the
emotional potholes to be avoided while coping and surviving.
Fifteen months after the loss of her children, Elaine and her husband, Joe, founded the
Rockville Centre Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a national self-help organization for
bereaved parents and siblings. As Chapter Leader, Elaine leads the discussion each month,
simply sharing what she has read and what she has learned, as she struggled to reweave her
family tapestry and to lead a meaningful life. Three years later, Elaine and Joe became New York
State Regional Coordinators for the Compassionate Friends.
She has shared her gifts of caring and humor with many audiences across the United
States at workshops, seminars, and radio and T.V. appearances, and through her magazine
articles, and videos. Simply telling what has helped her the most and what she has learned about
grief, she lovingly refers to as “sharing Peggy and Denis with the world.”

ELAINE E. STILLWELL, M.A, M.S.
Her two videos, Helping Your Heart Through Grief, Volumes I and II, filmed at Grief Seminars in
Louisville, KY, have helped many grieving families across the U.S. And in response to parents
requesting help for their children, Elaine has written two books, Sweet Memories (1998) and A
Forever Angel (2001), published by Centering Corporation, which are hands-on crafts books
offering children, a variety of projects to make and share the memory of their special person who
died, whether it be grandma or grandpa, mom or dad, sister or brother, best friend, or family pet.
In 1998, she wrote five pamphlets for the “I Can Survive Grief Series” published by Abigal Press,
Inc. In 2001, Liguori Publications published two pamphlets by Elaine, Stepping Stones for the
Bereaved (meditations) – now available in Spanish and Healing After the Death of Your Child
(coping strategies). Her newest book, The Death of a Child: Reflections for Grieving Parents,
was published by ACTA Publications, January 2004. She is a Contributing Editor to Grief Digest,
a national quarterly magazine for the bereaved, published by Centering Corporation.
In 1998, Mrs. Stillwell assumed duties as the Bereavement Coordinator for the Diocese of
Rockville Centre, NY, bringing together the ministers to the bereaved representing 134 parishes, to
receive training and enrichment for beginning bereavement programs or for the enhancement of
established programs; answering special needs of bereaved families, making referrals, and
keeping bereavement information updated. She also coordinated programs for the Separated and
Divorced and Singles from 2003 to 2006 until her office moved to Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury.
In 1999, Elaine Stillwell was called to serve on the Board of the National Catholic Ministry to
the Bereaved, (NCMB), offices in St. Louis, MO, which offers pastoral and spiritual support to the
bereaved, caregivers, agencies, congregations and dioceses, through education and resources. In
April 2000, Mrs. Stillwell chaired the NCMB National Ministry of Consolation Conference, held in
Belleville, IL, attended by bereavement ministers from all over the United States.
Elaine Stillwell coordinated the Rockville Centre Diocesan Bereavement Conference for the
bereaved and their caregivers in 2001, 2003, and 2005. In addition to setting up the WTC Book
Distribution Center in Oct. 2001, offering $100,000 worth of bereavement materials donated by
U.S. publishers for WTC families, she has helped parishes meet the needs of these families.
Elaine lives with her husband, Joe, and their black lab-mix, Buddy, in her hometown of
Rockville Centre, New York, where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Mercy
Medical Center. Her remaining child, Annie, a certified social worker and young mother, lives
nearby. An added joy to her life is her grandson, Christopher. (updated 6/1/06)
Wife, mother, educator, author, and lecturer, Elaine Stillwell shares her gifts of hope and inspiration
with the bereaved, simply telling what she has learned as a bereaved parent.
