2 TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT Teaching and learning process must be dynamic in line with the changing and agile current context without abandoning the theoretical foundations of teaching and learning philosophy. An understanding of the basics of teaching and learning philosophy is very important to be applied in the teaching and learning process. Taking into account the philosophy of teaching and learning, the application and integration of transformative teaching practice and innovative assessment methods into the courses SSS3074 Fieldwork Practice and SSS2053 Counselling Skills and it turns out the affirmative outcomes and effective implication towards the learners’ learning. In the context of SSS2053 Counselling Skills, I give emphasis to my assessment method based on the theory of reflective learning which emphasizes that learning derives from their experiences in which in this context of innovation through a case study, a written dialogue then does a role play, presentation, questions and answers session, discussion sessions (comments and feedbacks) and at the end learner’s own reflection. Through utilizing case study, learning and assessment which involve with a complex real-life situation can take the form of a problem-based inquiry approach that helping learners to think productively and professionally about concrete experiences-real problems and situations, and finding solutions. On the other hand, in the context of SSS3074 Fieldwork Practice, I believe that learning is an active process of discovery and participation based on self-motivation rather than on more passive acquaintance of facts and rules. The emerging trends in education are increasingly moving towards learner- centered approaches. My role as an educator is becoming more as a mentor or facilitator in guiding, facilitating and playing a crucial role in the process of learning. The approach and meaning of teaching and learning is not just in classroom but incorporated and integrated holistically within the online or offline classroom and real world setting, with engagement and interactivity. The process of teaching and learning is about collaborative interactions as an essential element of any pedagogy which anticipate that good learning is collaborative and that understanding comes through modelling, participation in, and reaction to the behaviors and thoughts of others, and on top of that learning methods play an important role and receive special attentions in our life.
3 STRATEGY IN TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT SSS3074 Fieldwork Practice is one of the compulsory courses (and it is a Service/Community Based Learning (SBL) course) offered every semester to the undergraduate students (3rd Year) in Social Work Studies Program, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UNIMAS. It requires students to do once weekly fieldwork placement at their respective assigned agencies and to attend once weekly discussion groups on campus for one semester. The placement gives students the opportunity for direct contact with client’s/target groups, at a level that commensurate with the students’ abilities and the time-frame of their placements. The once weekly discussion groups on campus and all graded assignments are designed to consolidate the students’ learning by integrating their experiences gained from placement with the knowledge gained from other social work courses. But during COVID-19, this course has to adapt to the context where students are not being able to do their fieldwork. But through online, in a group of four, students are required to identify ONE local/international social welfare service provider. After the group has decided which social welfare service provider that they want, approach and interview the key person (e.g. the service provider/social worker/counsellor/program coordinator) of the social welfare service provider. This stage I emphasize of working in a team-planning and decision making. The group is required to talk/interview with the key person in social welfare service provider that they have been identified at least 3 times or more through suitable online platform (e.g. Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Team, etc.,). Talk and listen to his/her stories and identifying what are his/her concerns/challenges/problems/issues. In other words, gathering information related to concerns/challenges/problems/issues-strengths or weaknesses, and identify the underlying needs of social welfare service provider. At this stage they are practicing their assessment and counselling skills-online/virtual activities. The discussion in their respective group providing them to practice their problem- solving approach, creating their innovative ideas, suggestions in order to find solutions. At the last stage they have to approach back to their respective key person of the social welfare service provider and by sharing their ideas/suggestions (practical action-e.g. brochure, poster, webinar, etc.,) that is relevant to it contexts. SSS2053 Counselling skills is one of the compulsory courses offered every semester to the undergraduate students (second Year) in Social Work Studies Program, Faculty of Social Sciences and
4 Humanities, UNIMAS. In this course-for their assessment, learners in pair is required to use a case study based on their own choices. The case study is related to social problems/issues or based on their own experience. Through case study, they come out/create a written dialogue conversation between a social worker and client. In the written dialogue conversation, one learner plays a role as social worker, that required learner to apply the techniques and principles/concepts in counselling skills in his/her dialogue conversations and actions. Another learner plays a role as a client to put in the position how client feels and experience. The written dialogue conversations they have to put in action, which required them to create a role play through a suitable online platform (e.g. Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Team, YouTube, etc.,) and need to record it. This requires learners to practice their conversations for them to improve the learning outcomes, and to feel and experience how the social worker in the real setting of practice. Their recorded role play needs to be presented in online class in order to get feedback from other learners and at the end each learner has to do their own written reflection. Through a case study, various continuous assessment methods can be applied to integrate with the CLOs of the courses. CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN TEACHING AND LEARNING For SSS3074 Fieldwork Practice, after being placed in the field for five weeks (online- during COVID-19/face to face during post COVID 19) the students managed to identify some of the problems and issues faced by the agencies. The adaptation of the problem- solving approach provides an opportunity for students to practice the values, skills, and knowledge that they have learned in the class room (online/offline-eLEAP/Microsoft Team, Webex, etc.,)) in finding solutions to the problems faced by the related agencies in which they are placed. The approach and process of learning in the course provide an utmost opportunity for the learners. The whole approach and process are incorporated and integrated holistically within the classroom and real-world setting. It is one of the transformative teaching practices, which provides a sensible learning opportunity and significant journey towards learners’ professional social work. In the context of SSS2053 Counselling skills, the usage of case study as an integrated innovative assessment method to provide an engagement and creative learning platform that connecting
