Overview

Low coercivity magnets are classified as soft ferrite magnets. What
exactly does this mean? The capacity of a magnetic substance to
tolerate external magnetic forces without becoming demagnetized is
measured by coercivity.

MOST COMMON SOFT FERRITES LEWIS HOWES

Manganese-zinc ferrite (MnZn, also known as MnaZn(1-a)Fe2O4). MnZn has
higher permeability and saturation induction than NiZn.
NiZn (NiaZn(1-a)Fe2O4) is a nickel-zinc ferrite (NiZn). NiZn ferrites have higher resistivity
than MnZn ferrites and are hence better suited for frequencies above 1 MHz.

Properties

They have a low level of coercion. The low coercivity of the material means that
its magnetization may readily reverse direction without squandering much

energy (hysteresis losses), while the high resistivity of the material avoids eddy
currents in the core, which is another cause of energy loss. They are widely utilized

in the cores of RF transformers and inductors in applications such as
switched-mode power supply and loopstick antennas used in AM radios because

of their comparably low losses at high frequencies.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

• Carry magnetism effectively with low • Have different properties such as
losses inductance and permeability so care is
required to get a correct material type
• Can handle alternating currents
• It will be expected that the customer
knows exactly what they require
