Using Supportive Techniques for Biomechanical Sucking Challenges

Presenter: Catherine Watson Genna

Misalignment of oral structures, poor strength and coordination due to
neurological problems and other biomechanical challenges can reduce
sucking effectiveness. This presentation introduces the very basics of
biomechanics that are applicable to breastfeeding and then details specific
techniques using compensatory support (touch pressure) that can improve
sucking effectiveness in infants with anatomically or neurologically based
feeding difficulties.

Objectives:

 Describe the importance of symmetry, balance and alignment in
biomechanics.

 List three conditions in which balance and symmetry of the oro-facial
musculature is altered.

 Describe supportive techniques for three biomechanical challenges.

Reflux, GERD and Breastfeeding

Presenter: Catherine Watson Genna

Irritable infants are commonly diagnosed with reflux, but might also be suffering
from feeding related difficulties or allergy. This presentation explores the recent
research on regurgitation, reflux and GERD in infants and their relationship to
feeding problems. Clinical evaluation and management of breastfeeding issues
that can contribute to reflux are also covered.

November 6, 2014, 13th Annual Conference

Objectives:

 Identify relevant components of parental education for uncomplicated
infant reflux.

 Identify three feeding, anatomical and/or regulatory difficulties that can
exacerbate reflux.

 Explain how GERD can result in failure to thrice in selected infants.
 Differentiate symptoms of reflux from other medical conditions.

Breastfeeding After Cosmetic Breast Surgery

Presenter: Diana West, BA, IBCLC

A comprehensive discussion of breast augmentation and reduction surgeries
and their impact upon lactation; discussion of incidence, motivations, surgical
techniques, implications for lactation, psychological factors, breastfeeding
management, and resources.

Note: This is Diana's hallmark presentation based on her seminal work in this
field.

Objectives:
 Explain two factors that affect breast augmentation lactation outcomes.
 Explain three factors that affect breast reduction lactation outcomes.

Making More Milk

Presenter: Diana West, BA, IBCLC

With new research and innovations in the lactation field, there are now many
more ways to increase milk production than in previous years. This talk presents

the most promising of these new methods, with information about targeting the
method to the underlying problem.

Objectives:

 Describe two methods to maximize milk production capability.
 Describe two methods of increasing milk synthesis through increased milk

removal.
 Describe two methods of increasing milk ejection.

12:45 PM - 1:45 PM Alexander Room

Facilitating Breastfeeding in NICU Graduates

Presenter: Catherine Watson Genna

Transitioning to breastfeeding ideally begins in the NICU and continues after
discharge. This presentation explores what can be done to transition ill and
preterm babies to direct breastfeeding. explores common challenges and
strategies to overcome them.

Objectives:

 Differentiate healthy term newborn feeding skills compared to preterm/ill
feeding skills.

 Detail the effects of immature respiratory and oral motor feeding skills on
breastfeeding for preterm/ill infants.

 Detail methods for transitioning preterm/ill infants to breastfeeding.

Infant Cranial Osteopathy for Better Feedings

Presenter: Dr. Connie Earl

Poor latch can be associated with poor infant weight gain, low milk supply,
maternal pain causing resistance to continued breastfeeding, and increased
supplementation. After we have exhausted positional corrections, latch training,
frenulum pathology, and equipment, we are often at a loss of how to proceed.

November 6, 2014, 13th Annual Conference
http://sonoma-county.org/breastfeedingcoalition

Cranial Osteopathy (or Craniosacral Therapy) are increasingly being utilized for
poor latch issues. In this session, we will discuss the research and theory behind
this treatment modality, and consider who may benefit from cranial work after
birth.

Objectives:

 Participants will be able to explain osteopathic philosophy.
 Participants will discuss the research regarding osteopathic treatment and

latch issues.
 Participants will be able to explain the cranial nerves involved in infant

suck coordination, and identify the anatomical structures involved in
these nerve pathways.
 Participants will be able to identify fetal positions and types of births that
may increase the risk of latch issues.
 Participants will learn how to find cranial practitioners in their area, and
how to screen them.

Helping Millennial Moms Breastfeed

Presenter: Diana West, BA, IBCLC

A discussion of effective methods to interact with the new generation of
breastfeeding mothers, known as "Millennial Moms," who have vastly different
needs and communication styles from those who typically counsel them.

Objectives:

 Describe three common characteristics of Millennial women.
 Identify three successful methods for counseling a Millennial generation

mother.

Helping Breastfeeding Working Mothers

Presenter: Diana West, BA, IBCLC

A discussion of innovative methods to help mothers who work outside the home
continue to breastfeed successfully.

Objectives:

 Explain two expression obstacles and how to overcome them.
 Describe two methods to introduce bottles to a breastfed baby in a way

that does not undermine breastfeeding.
 Identify three pumping options and three optimal storage parameters for

human milk.
