Parkhead Hall is a Marvel, a Piece of Living

History for a Connoisseur

Parkhead Hall

Welcome to

Parkhead Hall

The house was designed by John Mitchell-Withers in 1864/65 and was originally named ‘The Woodlands’.
It was a house of fine proportions, the first floor approached by an imposing staircase with an oak and iron
balustrade. The dining room was reputed to have been panelled with 16th Century oak taken from the long
gallery of the old Manor House in Sheffield.

There were kitchen gardens and orchards, stables and loose-boxes, a carriage house, harness room and all the other essential require-
ments of a Victorian gentlemen’s residence. Set in parkland, the house was approached from Ecclesall Road South and another drive
led down to the stables and out into Abbey Lane. The grounds were landscaped with a great many trees. A cook, parlour maid, nurse
and housemaid were employed to see to the running of the house. A gardener and coachman looked after the garden and stables.
John moved into The Woodlands in 1864-65. He was only 28 years old at the time. By 1871 he and Lise, his wife, had three children.
John, the eldest, was to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a respected architect. Sadly John Mitchell-Withers Senior was to
die at an early age and in June 1898, the house was sold to Robert Hadfield, the managing director of Hadfields with vast works in
Attercliffe and Tinsley. He embarked on substantial alterations, adding a two-storey block comprising billiard room, library, two further
bedrooms and a bathroom. The Woodlands too acquired a new name, Parkhead House.
Robert Hadfield was a J.P. He became Master of Cutler’s Company in Hallamshire in 1899 and he was a Freeman of the City of
London. In 1908 he was knighted. Parkhead House remained one of the family homes for forty years.
For some time Sheffield Corporation had been looking for a house, which could be used for judges’ lodgings when the Assize Courts
opened in Sheffield. When Parkhead House was put on the market in November 1938 it seemed ideal for this purpose. It was duly
purchased in 1939 for a staggering £6,750 but probably as a result of the Second World War these plans were shelved and in 1948 it
was adopted and opened as a house for thirty-five elderly men.
Over the years the grounds surrounding the house became reduced as parcels of land were sold for building. At some stage the 16th
Century oak from Sheffield Manor was removed, the fine fireplaces were blocked up, but glimpses of its past grandeur remained.
In 1988 Parkhead House became surplus to requirements. The elderly gentlemen moved out and it was put up for auction. With over
four acres of land and situated in a prime position, it was a very desirable piece of real estate and it was sold in June 1989 and trans-
formed into corporate offices. In 2003 the current owners (only the third family to live there) bought the hall and turned it back into a
family residence. Shirley Frost ‘Whirlow’ The Story of an ancient Sheffield hamlet.
