INTRODUCTION

 Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Mahiaddin bin Md. Yassin or familiarly known as Muhyiddin bin Mohd. Yassin is a Malaysian politician who has
served as the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia since 1 March 2020.

BIODATA

 Muhyiddin Yassin was born in May 15,1947 in Muar, the southern state of Johor.
 Muhyiddin Yassin is 74 years old (2021).
 A Minister of Malaysia since 1 March 2020.

 Muhyiddin Yassin is the son of a prominent religious cleric, Muhammad Yassin bin Mohammad.
 Muhammad is also the Bukit Gambir assemblyperson in the state of Johor.
 He was a Malay of Bugis descent.

 Muhyiddin Yassin’s mother is Hajjah Khadijah binti Kassim.
 She was a Malay of Javanese descent.

 They are blessed with 2 sons and 2 daughters, namely: Fakhri Yassin Mahiaddin, Nabilah Mahiaddin, Najwa Mahiaddin and Farhan Yassin Mahiaddin respectively.

 Muhyiddin received his primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Maharani, Muar, Johor, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Ismail, Muar, Johor.
 Whilst, he received his secondary education at the Muar High School, Johor.
 Muhyiddin has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Malay Studies, having graduated from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1971.

CHRONOLOGY

 1971 – 1986 : Started of Muhyiddin’s political journey. Joined UMNO (Pagoh).
 1986 – 1995 : Menteri Besar of Johor.
 1995 – 2015 : Ministership.
 2015 – 2018 : Post Deputy Prime Ministership.
 2018 – 2020 : Minister of Home Affairs.
 2020 – Present : Prime Ministership.

1971 – 1986 : Started of Muhyiddin’s political journey. Joined UMNO (Pagoh).
 Muhyiddin joined the Malay nationalist UMNO party in Pagoh in 1971 and was elected as youth chief after graduating with degree economics and Malay studies.
 He became the Youth Chief of Johor state UMNO Youth until 1987.
 He has since been seen as a key personality in the conservative clique in UMNO.

1986 – 1995 : Menteri Besar of Johor.
 In the 1986 general election, Muhyiddin won and became the Menteri Besar of Johor on 13 August 1986.
 His tenure as Menteri Besar lasted until 6 May 1995.

1995 – 2015 : Ministership.
 Muhyiddin contested in the 1995 General Election.
 Since then, he served several different federal government cabinet posts during his tenure of Ministership.
 He was appointed deputy prime minister on 9 April 2009 and also acted as Minister of Education.
 He ended the use of English as the medium of instruction for science and Mathematics in public schools.
 He also attracted controversy after describing himself as “Malay first” when challenged by the opposition to pronounce himself as “Malaysian first”.

2015 – 2018 : Post Deputy Prime Ministership.
 In August 2016, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM or Bersatu for short) together with former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad was formed.

2018 – 2020 : Minister of Home Affairs.
 Muhyiddin was appointed as Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad when Pakatan Harapan

won the 14th General Election.
 In the aftermath of 2018 general election (GE14), Muhyiddin was diagnosed with an early-stage tumour in the pancreas and revealed

he underwent surgery and chemotherapy.

2020 – Present : Prime Ministership.
 On 29 February 2020, Muhyiddin was appointed Prime Minister by the king, following the abrupt resignation of Mahathir Mohamad five days before.
 He is the first person appointed to the position while holding both a parliamentary and state seat at the same time.

MUHYIDDIN’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COUNTRY

 Muhyiddin became prominent in Malaysia in response to the Covid-19 pandemic shortly after formally appointed and sworn in on 1 March 2020.
 In response, Muhyiddin implemented the 2020 Malaysia movement control order (MCO) on 16 March 2020 to prevent the disease from infecting more Malaysians.
 The MCO started nationwide from 18 March and was extended conditionally to 9 June 2020.

 In response to the economic impact of COVID-19, Muhyiddin introduced an economic stimulus package worth RM 250 billion on
27 March to soften the economic strain during the MCO.

 Consequently, the government has taken several initiatives to provide allocations to curb the spread of COVID-19 as the government
steps up its battle against the pandemic.

2021 Malaysian State of Emergency
 In order to curb and in response to a spike in COVID-19 cases throughout the country, Muhyiddin’s request to declare a state of emergency

which was declined on 19 October 2020 by the King.
 However, a new request to declare a state of emergency was granted by the King on 21 January 2021 and is expected to last until the 1st of August 2021.

MUHYIDDIN’S LEADERSHIP VALUES

 The present government has pledged that the development of the younger generation in all aspects is a priority.
 Youths are perceived as the generation that could ensure continuity in the country’s development and thus should be involved in the policy development process.
 Leadership skills are among the key competencies in the development of the younger generation today.
 “Every youth should possess good leadership qualities. At the very least, youths should be able to lead themselves” quoted by Muhyiddin.
 Besides leadership qualities, soft skills encompassing management ability, communication, interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability are also essential in the

development of today’s younger generation – the generation that can change the world.

MUHYIDDIN’S LEADERSHIP VALUES (CONT’D)

 Muhyiddin is an avid golf lover.
 He is the founder of TSM Charity Golf (stands for “Tan Sri Muhyiddin”), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that aims to build a caring

community through charitable donations from golf.
 The main objective is to reduce suffering and improve living conditions for those most at risk due to socio-economic circumstances beyond their control.
 The secondary objective is to provide scholarship funds for bright students to further their education overseas and provide an avenue for young amateur

golfers to improve their game in an academy environment.

CONCLUSION

 For now, Muhyiddin’s strategic moves and political ladder have helped him reach the place he aimed for in his nearly four decades in
politics.

 It is a continuous challenge for Muhyiddin over the coming days as he continues to hold on to his Minister’s power.
