Resources For Teaching Business
English
Prepping and planning lessons for General English classes is something we
all get used to as TEFL teachers. Finding resources, coming up with
appropriate ideas and activities, putting together your lesson plan - that all
comes quite easily with time and experience.
But when you start teaching an English specialization, such as Business
English, you might find yourself in unfamiliar territory.
Teaching Business English
Many TEFL teachers end up teaching Business English, even if they are not businesspeople
themselves.
In addition to the usual grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, writing, listening
and speaking that is taught in General English lessons, Business English also includes a few
extra:
- writing emails
- giving presentations
- writing reports
- talking on the phone
- negotiating.
This list is not comprehensive by any means. Whichever field of business your student is
involved in will have its own specific language needs.
Resources for teaching Business
English
Teaching Business English is similar to teaching English for Exams, English for
Hospitality, or any other specialization.
When it comes to teaching materials, you can buy resource books and activity
books, or you can look online for lesson plans and materials.
Your initial meeting with your student/s, should include a needs analysis. This
needs analysis will inform you of the specific needs of your students. Do they
need to know how to prepare a sales report? Do they need to be able to
communicate with international colleagues? Do they need to make flight
reservations regularly? This, in turn, will help you choose appropriate materials
for your lessons.
Don’t forget about authentic sources for materials. If relevant, newspaper or
journal articles, company reports, and real statistics can be used to great
effect in the classroom.
