Leadership Development within a Culture of Trust

AAPL Faculty: Rebekah Apple, MA, DHSc

Course Description:
Building upon the results of an assessment specifically designed for physician
leaders, this course reviews the characteristics, motivations and thinking styles
present in the attendee group. Elucidating the way leaders can effectively
approach the management of themselves and others, the course provides a
detailed view of strengths and developmental opportunities while setting a

Prior to the course, participants respond to the American Association for

through surveys of physician membership and the work of the Health Leadership
Alliance, a network of professional healthcare administration associations
representing more than 140,000 healthcare management professionals.
Course Objectives:

■ Understand how your approach is perceived by others
■ Have clarity regarding your leadership strengths and developmental

opportunities

Dealing with Disruptive Physicians

AAPL Faculty: Richard Lauve, MD

Course Description:
The Joint Commission has required a policy that “defines acceptable and disruptive
and inappropriate behaviors” since January of 2009. Research on high-reliability
organizations demonstrates that disruptive and inappropriate behavior deteriorates
both quality and safety. Yet many organizations struggle with implementing
a process for managing these behaviors that balances the imperative for a
harassment-free workplace with the rights of the disruptive individual.
In their Sentinel Event Alert of July 9, 2008, the Joint Commission referenced
publications with Dr. Lauve as co-author 11 times. Dr. Lauve and his colleagues
have provided guidance to a number of health care systems throughout the
process, from policy development to expert witness testimony after-the-fact of
privilege adverse action. Convinced that there are right and wrong ways “to do
the right thing,” Dr. Lauve shares his experiences in this program while simplifying
the regulations, laws, and court decisions that influence how systems can get this
important work accomplished.
Course Objectives:

■ Implement policy to identify problematic behavior in applicants
■ Develop clear behavior expectations
■ Identify resources and techniques for dealing with disruptive behavior
■ Differentiate between manageable disruptive behavior and the disruptive

individual likely to require professional help
■ Develop policy to guide appropriate responses to the full continuum of

disruptive behavior

24 | Physician Leadership Development Program

A Message from Peter Angood, MD, President & CEO, American Association for Physician Leadership®

Greetings!
Congratulations on your selection as one of the first physicians to
participate in the Lee Health Physician Leadership Program. As a
physician, you are no stranger to leadership — all physicians are
inherently leaders. However, true leaders recognize the need to
enhance their skills and mindset. True leaders recognize the value
of collaborative exchanges of ideas on interdisciplinary teams in
order to yield the best results for their organizations and industry
— and to produce the very best outcomes for their patients.
The practice of medicine and the health care industry are evolving
to include a more diverse workforce comprised of physicians
and independent practitioners on teams alongside staff from
other allied health care professions. As the industry continues to
change, physician leaders naturally must adapt by learning new
competencies and ways to collaborate.
As a member of this program’s first cohort, it is my hope that
this experience ignites a life-long pursuit of leadership skills
that keep pace with your clinical expertise. Upon completion
of the Lee Health Physician Leadership Program, you will be
just a few competencies shy of earning your Certified Physician
Executive credential, certifying your leadership, management and
communication proficiencies and your ability to effectively improve
the quality and efficiency of your health care organization. We also
hope you’ll consider joining our community of physician leaders as
a member of AAPL. Until then, I look forward to the changes you
and your colleagues experience as you increase your leadership
skills for benefit of your patients and Lee Health.
Sincerely,

Peter Angood, MD
