The Biography of Beethoven

Who was Beethoven?
Ludwig van Beethoven (December 16, 1770 to March 26, 1827) was a German pianist and composer
who was considered the greatest of all time. His compositions combined vocals and instruments. Bee-
thoven suffered from deafness and some of his most important works were composed during the last
10 years of his life, when he was unable to hear.
Beethoven’s music:
Some of Beethoven’s well-known compositions are: • Symphony No.3 In 1804, only weeks after Na-
poleon Bonaparte became the Emperor of France, Beethoven debuted his "Symphony No. 3" in Napo-
leon's honor. Link to Symphony No.3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGEiJ44K3Oo

• Fur Elise In 1810, Beethoven completed “Fur Elise” (meaning For Elise), although it was not pub-
lished until 40 years after his death. In 1867, it was discovered by a German music scholar, but Beetho-
ven’s original manuscript had been lost. Some scholars have suggested it was dedicated to his friend,
student and fellow musician, Therese Malfatti, to whom he proposed around the time of the song’s
composition. Others said it was for the German soprano (a woman who has the highest singing voice)
Elisabeth Rockel, another friend of Beethoven’s. Link to “Fur Elise”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

• Missa Solemnis This is considered one of Beethoven’s finest achievements. Just under 90 minutes in
length, this rarely-performed piece includes a chorus, orchestra and four soloists. Link to “Missa Sol-
emnis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u1EduLH7L8

Family and Childhood: Beethoven had two younger brothers, Caspar, born in 1774, and Johann, born
in 1776. Beethoven's mother, Maria Magdalena van Beethoven, was gentle and a judgmental woman.
His father, Johann van Beethoven, was a court singer, although he was known for drinking more than
his singing. However, Beethoven's grandfather, Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven, was Bonn's most
prosperous musician and believed in Beethoven. Beethoven’s father started
teaching him when he was very young with violence. >>>Read
