A Message from 3
President Donna Bembenek

This year more than most, we have all leaned on our faith. The
circumstances since the start of the global pandemic required our
parishes to close and offer virtual religious services. At Catholic
Memorial High School, we worked very hard to prioritize our Catholic
faith through daily prayer, virtual praying of the rosary, a special
weekly message from Fr. John and Campus Ministry, virtual service
opportunities and more.
When COVID-19 required us to close our campus in March 2020, none of
us could have imagined that the remote instruction we effectively pivoted
to would become the norm for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school
year. Thanks to this committed community, we were able to rise above
the challenges presented by the world pandemic and move swiftly to
ensure our students thrived. It is a true testament to the value you place
on a quality education, deeply rooted in our Catholic faith.
Your generosity provided critical funding for the technology needed to
support remote learning, training for our teachers and critical health
and safety equipment and supplies that ensured our campus was a safe,
secure and healthy environment for our students to return to. Thanks
to you, we continued to provide an exceptional, rigorous, faith-filled
education to each of our students while keeping them, our teachers, staff
and community safe.
In the midst of this crisis, your support helped us make great strides
toward implementation of our strategic plan. We continued our focus
to serve students with diverse learning styles. Since the beginning of
2020 we have delivered on key strategic plan goals by adding a second
Academic Resource Specialist in the Academic Resource Center, expanded
our strong STEM curriculum, provided real-world, hands-on learning
experiences for our students through internships, added critical mental
health services for students embedded in the school day, and have put
in place the structure to look forward with innovative educational
strategies that recognize the future opportunities our students will have
available to them.
As I reflect on the past year, my heart is filled with gratitude for each
of you – for your unwavering support, kindness, generosity and deep
caring for our students and our school. We are pleased to have returned
to in-person instruction this fall and ask that you continue to keep CMH
faculty, students and staff in your prayers.
Our Lady of Memorial, pray for us!

purposeful leaders who serve our community and the world.
The annual Crusader Day of Service was expanded this year
as our students went out into the community to serve more

hit a 30-year milestone.

When COVID-19 closed our campus, students participated in

through Fr. John’s video messages and continued their commitment

LESSONS FOR LIFE

Valentina Medrano is a member of the CMH
Class of 2020, who graduated from high
school and started college in the midst of a
global pandemic. Resilience, perseverance and
the ability to adapt were demanded.

“Nothing can really prepare you for college
life during a pandemic, but CMH gave me a
solid foundation,” Valentina said. She credits her
CMH teachers, a rigorous curriculum and her
internship at InPro Architectural Products for
providing her with the confidence and skills she
needed to succeed during her first semester at
Marquette University.

“I was surrounded by an incredible team
of mentors at InPro who taught me critical
skills like communication, professionalism and
adaptability. The internship program allowed me
to gain a foothold in the real world.”

Valentina was one of 11 CMH students
who participated in CMH’s pilot internship
program. The experience, she said, equipped
her with skills that will enable her to face the
uncertainties of life with confidence.

Championship Athletics

T he Crusader winning tradition continued this
year as CMH celebrated the first state title in
school history for girls tennis and the football
team again took home the State Championship. When
COVID-19 cut short the winter season and forced the
cancellation of the spring season, our athletes did not
quit. Individual workouts continued and coaches found
innovative ways to keep the spirit of competition alive.

LEGACIES ARE BUILT AT CMH

F our-sport star athlete Luke Fox ’20, grew
up knowing what it means to be a Crusader.
Hard work, integrity, sportsmanship – these
were traits instilled in him, not just by his
coaches but by his family. Crusader athletics –
and the lessons learned from them – runs deep
in the Fox family. His parents, Chris Fox ’88
and Char Saber ’88, were Crusader athletes
as were other members of his extended family.
Luke followed in their footsteps, earning several
accolades, including WIAA 2020 Scholar Athlete.
Last spring, he accepted a full-ride scholarship to
play baseball for Duke University and passed the

Engaging Extracurriculars

T he Catholic Memorial High School experience reaches far
beyond the classroom. Student life is full of opportunities
to explore, dream and succeed. Students are encouraged
to explore and grow their passions through a variety of
activities that promote personal growth intellectually,
spiritually and socially. Whether through drama, art, music,
robotics, faith or a student-created club, CMH offers countless
activities that engage them in self-discovery.

Biomedical studies at CMH sparked such
a passion in Dewane Kayiwa ’20 that
he wanted to find a way to apply what he
was learning in the classroom in a real-
world way. So, with the backing of the CMH
faculty, Dewane established a CMH chapter
of HOSA (Health Occupations Students
of America), an organization dedicated to
empowering future health professionals
to develop leadership and technical skills
through education, collaboration and
experience. “Participating in biomedical
classes and HOSA boosted my problem-

knowledge that other undergrads were
deprived of,” said Dewane, currently a
freshman at UW-LaCrosse

activities not only provided her an opportunity to

develop leadership skills and give back to others.
“Had I not participated in a variety of extracurricular
activities, I would not be the student I am today,”
