GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.” To some, this is a criticism. For CMH, it is a powerful
statement of how and why we are experiencing great success. Compared to when I first became a student in
the eighties, and then returned eight years ago as president, CMH continues to transform as we strengthen
the foundation upon which we were built and renew our facilities and resources to ensure an even brighter
future.

Starting in the summer of 2014, physical changes to the CMH facilities began to take place thanks to the
success of the Crusading for Excellence Campaign efforts and the generosity of many donors. The glass block
on the front of the building was replaced with windows that cast natural light into the building. We replaced
331 of the original lockers and have installed air conditioning throughout the entire building. The green-tinted
gravel and dirt in the valley is now synthetic turf. The library has been transformed into the Czarnecki Family
Academic Resource Center which is also home to the Counseling Department and the Taugher Family
Campus Ministry Center. The creation of the Innovation Wing now provides academic spaces for our students
to engage in active learning while using our trademarked design-thinking process Memorial Propel. Daily
schedules include Student Growth Plan mentoring, an interdisciplinary essay, and a Catholic Service Learning
Project. My, how things have changed!

At CMH, we don’t pursue change merely for change’s sake. We still hold close to our founding as a living
memorial to 29 fallen servicemen and their sacrifice for ideals greater than one’s self. We still celebrate our
Catholic faith through prayer, sacrament, and servant leadership. We still make sure that through coursework
and extra-curriculars, CMH students are among the country’s best prepared for college and careers.

It is remarkable to see the generosity of the CMH family continue to grow each year. Thank you for sharing
your faith, your support, and your belief in the future of Catholic Memorial High School. We do our very best
to make sure that this report is accurate. If there is an error, please let us know so we can improve our accuracy
next year. If you have not been back to visit recently, please know that you are always welcome.

Center (ARC), formerly the library, was
renovated to update the student study
and academic support services area. The
renovated space is now home to the
Counseling Department and the Taugher
Family Campus Ministry Center. The space
now also includes conference rooms, work
space, and a reception area. Construction
began at the end of May 2015 and was
completed prior to the start of school in
August 2015.

The upper level of the southwest wing of
the building, previously the math wing, was
renovated to create a 21st Century Learning
Center. Seven Innovation Labs were created
for interdisciplinary classes in rooms that are
collaborative and flexible. Each classroom
has a break out space connected to it. The
new board room is also located in the
Innovation Wing. Construction began at the
end of May 2015 and was completed prior
to the beginning of the second semester in
January 2016.

Our Lady of Memorial Chapel

CAPSTONE PROJECT APPEAL

CAPSTONE TO A MAGNIFICENT ACCOMPLISHMENT
The addition of the new Our Lady of Memorial Chapel is the final “ta-da”
moment of the Crusading for Excellence Campaign. Together we have
successfully raised over $10 million. Upon reaching $10.8 million, we
will ensure the completion of this most sacred space. It will highlight an
exceptional environment to form disciples.
This campaign capstone is what our effort has been about all along… a
celebration of Catholic high school education in Waukesha County. The
chapel itself reflects this in both the spiritual and physical sense.
LIVING OUR MISSION
By putting the chapel front and center on our campus, this project showcases
our commitment to the Gospel, the Eucharist and each other. As part of the
Catholic Memorial High School community, we are called to develop our
Catholic faith and serve our greater communities. Through prayer and action,
Catholic Memorial High School is a place where students receive a values-rich
education as we fulfill our mission to educate, guide, and prepare students to
serve the Church and the world.
IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE
Catholic Memorial High School was dedicated in 1949 to remember the 23
young men of St. Joseph’s Parish in Waukesha who gave their lives serving
their country in World War II. Since then, six alumni have been added to this
honor roll.
Construction of the new chapel will include a formal Memorial Wall to honor
the 29 fallen servicemen for whom Catholic Memorial High School is a living
memorial.
HOLDING ONTO OUR LEGACY—LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
The plans for the Our Lady of Memorial Chapel reflect our commitment to
Catholic Identity and the values that are the pillars of The Memorial Way.
Great thought has been given to incorporate elements of our past as well as
the distinctiveness that truly makes CMH unique.

As we come to the conclusion of the 2015-16 school year, and with great anticipation we prepare to embark on yet
another hope- and faith-filled school year, I am struck by one thought: how inspired I am to have once again witnessed
firsthand the extraordinary collaborative effort involved in making Catholic Memorial High School the incredible place
that it is. Students, parents, faculty, administration, volunteers, donors, the greater CMH community – all working in
unison to ensure that CMH remains the premier Catholic high school.

I have spent many years, dating back to my own graduation from Catholic Memorial High School in 1979, extolling the
virtues of CMH. I have and will continue to “suggest” in the strongest possible terms to anyone and everyone that they
send their children to Catholic Memorial. Nudging, encouraging, cajoling, arm twisting—I’m not above any of these
efforts to persuade parents to choose Catholic Memorial for their kids. And yes, parents, this is your decision to make.

Along the way I’m often asked, “Why spend the money to send our children to Catholic Memorial High School when
decent public school alternatives are available?” How best to quantify all that Catholic Memorial has to offer? Is it the
faith-filled, service-oriented leaders CMH educates and sends out into the world year after year? Is it the extraordinary
academic achievements of its student body? The abundant college credits our students have earned at CMH? The
substantial scholarships and aid that are awarded to our graduates. The exceptional performing and visual arts and
sciences programs? The stellar, yet inclusive CMH athletic programs? When asked the question, “Why Catholic
Memorial?” I can recite chapter and verse as to all of the above. It’s that…but it’s also so much more.

I would invite anyone considering CMH (parents and kids) to simply take the time to walk the halls of the school, spend
time with the Catholic Memorial family and observe the Catholic Memorial community living their lives the Memorial
Way. That is the greatest testament to the value of a Catholic Memorial education. You can feel it when you walk through
the doors: the energy, the camaraderie, the community, the faith, the family that is Catholic Memorial. The myriad
accomplishments of CMH graduates would be far less meaningful without this instilled sense of community and family
through which all CMH students are educated, guided and prepared to serve the world and the Church. While our
students all eventually graduate from CMH and move on, each takes with them a lasting legacy that is Catholic Memorial
and its values: Memorial, Faith, Trust, Respect, Inclusiveness, Professionalism, Excellence and Caritas in Omnibus.

That’s why my parents sent me to Catholic Memorial. It’s why Michelle and I have sent our kids to CMH. It’s why CMH’s
many stakeholders and supporters continue to work so tirelessly and give so generously on behalf of Catholic Memorial
High School. And it’s my answer to the question “Why Catholic Memorial?”

Fletcher Metz ’16, Nick Davis ’16 and Sarah Rosecky ’16 were named recipients of
the Nick Kapusniak ’11 Making a Difference Award, established by his parents, Rich
and Renee Kapusniak. The annual award is given to a senior nominated by the faculty
and staff for exemplifying values similar to which Nick embodied: a love for serving

people, a tremendously generous spirit and a genuine friendliness toward others.
