2 CMH ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019

A MES SA GE FROM MICHAEL GRUBICH,
CHAIRMAN OF THE BO ARD OF DIREC T OR S

The past year has been a transformative one for Catholic Memorial High School. A
new vision, ignited by new leadership, and the drive to grow the premier high school
in the greater Waukesha County area have provided us with great momentum as we
head into full implementation of a new strategic plan.

Catholic Memorial has a rich history of providing superior academics that push
students to reach higher, achieve more and go on to find success in college, work and
life. My wife, Ann Marie, and I have experienced this in the most personal of ways as
we watched our three children thrive at CMH. Each has found success.

This past year, I have had the unique opportunity to not only experience CMH as a
parent, but also to work alongside its leadership during the first year of my tenure
as Chairman of the Board. I could not be more impressed with the leadership I have
witnessed.
“ With all of Laura Anderson, in her first year as principal, has quickly earned the respect and

admiration of our CMH community. She is an extraordinary administrator who leads
us working with compassion and faith. Through the establishment of Professional Learning
Teams, Laura has empowered our faculty to use their expertise in areas of instruction
together, more that they are most passionate about to help set goals and raise the bar even higher for
themselves and our students. Laura has also been instrumental in the development
children will of our new strategic plan, lending her academic expertise to the development of key
initiatives.
rise to their We also invested in our Advancement Department. That investment is showing
early returns as we exceeded goals in both areas. We admitted a freshman class
God-given of 156 students, surpassing the prior year’s freshman enrollment by 23 students.
Thanks to your support, we raised a record $962,208 for our annual Crusader
” families in need, add bussing in two important markets, enhance the security of the
potential. Fund. That support has made it possible for us to increase tuition assistance to those

building and continue our focus on improving the way we reward and compensate
our teachers. Your gifts also made it possible to increase Fr. John Gibson’s time on
campus to three days per week. Yet, the need remains. We’ve set the bar even higher
this coming year to meet that increased need. Together, I know we will rise to the
challenge.
It is my honor to lead a board that is as passionate about Catholic Memorial as I
am. We are proud to be working alongside this administration to bring to life our
new strategic plan – RISE: A Plan to Grow Catholic Memorial High School and its
counterpart, RISE: A Campaign for Catholic Memorial. Together, they make up the
comprehensive blueprint that will propel Catholic Memorial forward.
We are truly grateful for your enthusiasm of our plan and for the early support we’ve
received. With all of us working together more children will rise to their God-given
potential.

Blessings,

Michael Grubich
Chairman of the Board of Directors

FAITH & SERVICE

Throughout the year, Catholic Memorial

students experienced the impact that charity

and service have on the world around them.

Whether through Mass, Adoration, the Sacraments or during
faith discussion and exploration in their classes with CMH
Chaplain Fr. John Gibson, students grew in faith. They also

had many opportunities to give back through countless
service projects and CMH’s signature Crusader Day
of Service, which culminates with a Community

Thanksgiving Dinner prepared and served by students
and staff. It is through these everyday occurrences

that students are inspired to live out the Catholic
Memorial motto of Caritas in Omnibus, or Charity
in All Things.

FINDING PURPOSE AND PAS SION
Patrick Gosenheimer found his place at CMH during his very first
retreat. “I really felt like I was a part of something,” Patrick said.
Since then, Patrick, who is now a senior, became active in the

CMH Campus Ministry Leadership Team, serving at Mass and
leading class retreats. During their freshman, sophomore and
senior years, all students at CMH have the unique opportunity

to expand their faith and strengthen bonds with classmates
during class retreats.

Throughout the 2018-2019 school year, Catholic

Memorial students excelled at every grade level.

Inspired and encouraged by an exceptional faculty, our students rose to the
challenge of a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum to achieve more than they

thought possible.

S TRIVING F OR MORE
Nicole Adams came to Catholic Memorial as a sophomore transfer
student after teachers at her previous school discouraged her from taking
advanced courses, implying her dyslexia would keep her from achieving
success. Nicole dismissed that notion. She knew she was capable of
more. “Nobody understood my true capabilities,” she said. So she
enrolled at Catholic Memorial where teachers pushed and encouraged
her and she found the support she needed through small class sizes,
individual attention and the Academic Resource Center. Nicole was
also active in the National Honor Society, Student Ambassadors and as
Captain of the Pom & Dance Team. Nicole graduated from CMH in May
2019 and is currently attending St. Thomas University on a full academic
scholarship.

G AINING REAL - W ORLD EXPERIENCE
A few afternoons a week, Owen Stoehr leaves Catholic Memorial early and
heads to Husco International. He swipes his badge and joins the team of
engineers working to support production of a line of hydraulic cartridge
valves. He is just one of several students participating in a pilot program
that pairs CMH seniors with corporate partners who provide critical
hands-on learning through internships designed to give the students real-
world experience working alongside professionals. “This experience has
allowed me to further my leadership and communication skills, all while
expanding my technical knowledge in engineering,” Owen said.

“ At Catholic Memorial I’ve gained an education far

beyond what is possible in the classroom and made

connections that will help me throughout my life.

As a nervous freshman coming to Catholic Memorial and the only
student from her middle school, Lana Belmontes was encouraged by
teachers and staff members to get involved in the over 80 sports, clubs
and activities offered at CMH to meet new people. Lana took their
advice and played on the volleyball team, joined the Inclusiveness Team
and participated in activities with the ARTT Club during her first year.
Lana was able to really gain confidence and find her place as a leader
immediately because of the support she received from the amazing
community at CMH.

NEW IN 2018-2019

Last year, Catholic Memorial introduced more families

to the CMH experience by increasing access and engaging

more young families.

Expanded Bussing

Catholic Memorial expanded bussing options last year, increasing the number of
routes available to families throughout the greater Waukesha area. In addition to the
established bus options provided to families that reside in the Waukesha and New

Berlin school districts, CMH added two new routes servicing seven convenient locations
for families in Hartland, Delafield, Pewaukee, Wauwatosa and Brookfield.

The program saw an increase in offerings and
a surge in participation. The programs offered

include: Football, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball,
Baseball and Coed Tennis. In addition, dozens of

young actors participated in “Kids Cast,” CMH’s
youth drama experience. Young performing artists
rehearse alongside and are mentored by CMH actors.

They are featured in CMH’s annual spring musical.

New Military Scholarship Honors our History

This past year, Catholic Memorial announced the Eagle Award – Military
Service Scholarship. The scholarship provides another financial pathway

for those seeking a CMH education. The scholarship, established in honor
of Catholic Memorial’s history and all those who have sacrificed so much
in service to our country, is available to family members of veterans or

active duty personnel. Up to 10 students are awarded a $1,000 scholarship,
renewable for each subsequent year.

Catholic Memorial High School was blessed by the generosity of hundreds of

Carsen Piascek walked into President Donna Bembenek’s office near the
PARISH SUPPOR T end of his senior year and quietly delivered an envelope containing twenty-
$137,815 three $100 bills. He told her he felt so blessed by his experience at CMH that
he wanted to help another young person benefit from a CMH education.
Each of the $100 bills, he said, were in honor of one of the 23 parishioners
from St. Joseph Parish in Waukesha – his home parish – who gave their lives
in WWII and for whom CMH stands as a living memorial. Carsen had recently
learned that he had earned a full academic scholarship to college. The
money he donated was taken from funds he saved for college.
