CMH alumna, Meghan Knapp Kinateder ‘95, was ALUMNI PROFILE
featured in the Catholic Herald for her dedication to
serving others throughout her time in school and now MEGHAN KNAPP KINATEDER ‘95
in her career in medicine.
“There was a big emphasis on Catholic education in
our family, my parents wanted our faith to be nurtured
in every possible way.”
The article highlights her time at Catholic Memorial,
being very involved in extracurriculars, playing
basketball her freshman and sophomore years,
running varsity track and cross country and being a
part of student council, the Pro-Life group on campus,
and focusing much of her time on service.

“Catholic Memorial put a huge emphasis on service projects,”
Kinateder said. “When I was doing my application to Notre Dame,
my top college choice, I remember in my essay talking about how
my education at Catholic Memorial was so well-rounded with
athletics, academics, and service.” Kinateder says that her time at
Catholic Memorial and the way the school educated the whole
student was instrumental in getting her into Notre Dame.

ALUMNI PROFILE Catholic Memorial alumna, Mary Kuemmel Petrie ’76,
MARY KUEMMEL PETRIE ‘76 was also featured in the Catholic Herald for her role at
CMH leading the STEM (science, technology,
engineering and math) program. The article was
published to celebrate Women’s History Month, as all
strands of the STEM program at CMH were being led by
female teachers. It was an amazing tribute to the
success of the program and the work that every teacher
involved puts into it to grow and elevate students for
careers of the future.

Petrie, a 2020 Herb Kohl Teaching Award recipient, is also a 1976 CMH alumna and
was the first female student to take a mechanical drawing class at Catholic Memorial.
She went on to graduate from Marquette University and became a mechanical
engineer. She transitioned to teaching as her second profession after filling in for a
teacher at a middle school and loved the experience so much she went back to school
to get her teaching degree.

“When I started working in mechanical engineering, I didn’t know of any other
females in my profession, and that was difficult,” said Petrie. “Thankfully, times are
changing. I believe that in order for a project to be successful, you need varying ideas
and approaches. Women and men think differently, and having both males and
females involved gives you the best of both worlds.”

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

JEFF SOMMERFELD ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

We were thrilled to welcome Mr. Jeff Sommerfeld to the English Department this past year. With his witty
humor and love for everything Shakespeare, he immediately made an impression with the students in his
Literature classes. He also came with a wealth of knowledge to share, recently returning to Wisconsin
from working for the University of Arizona in undergraduate recruitment and as an editor-in-chief for an
independent literary journal. He previously earned his master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in
Ethical Leadership and taught English literature, writing and drama courses in both Minnesota and
Wisconsin. He seemed to fit right in with the CMH family and got involved as a group leader on senior
retreat. His connection with the seniors even brought about the opportunity for him to present at the
Class of 2021 Graduation Ceremony. We are so grateful for his positive energy, excitement and wealth of
knowledge that he brings to the classroom.

“Catholic Memorial is an incredibly special place, and I felt welcome in the exceptional learning
community right away. Our students are driven by the pursuit to be their best and achieve excellence,
while displaying curiosity, kindness, and discipline along the way. I also love that we have the
opportunity to pray and grow in our faith together throughout each school day.”

ANGIE FLANAGAN ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER

In her time at Catholic Memorial, Angie Flanagan has proved to be a phenomenal source of support for
students. She joined the CMH team in 2018 as the lead Academic Resource Specialist and has expanded
the academic support programs provided for students in the Academic Resource Center. Mrs. Flanagan
worked with students every day in every subject area. She has helped elevate CMH’s outstanding support
structure for students with education accommodations, enrichment for students who excel in advanced
courses, guidance for students to discover their best study habits and provide help to every student
during study halls and in classrooms with assignments and projects.

“It is very rewarding to work with students to go beyond what they consider possible for themselves and
help them discover amazing possibilities God has in store for them. In the classroom, as well as through
extracurricular activities, there are so many opportunities to share my faith and passion for learning. As a
parent of current and alumni students, I am very grateful for the CMH community and I feel blessed to be
a part of the CMH faculty and staff.”

CINDI PETRE CAMPUS MINISTRY

It might have been Cindi Petre’s first full year working at Catholic Memorial as the Director of Campus
Ministry, but she was no stranger to the role with 18 years of experience as the Director of High School
Youth Ministry at St. Anthony on the Lake Parish. Her experience, attention to detail and creativity led the
Campus Ministry at CMH this year with grace. Cindi started off her work by organizing a blessing of the
campus, which was calming and reassuring to the community for the uncertainty felt for the year ahead
during the pandemic. She continued to work tirelessly to organize ways for in-person Mass and
sacraments for student while adhering to protocols and even found a way to provide in-person retreats
for the freshman and sophomore classes along with an overnight retreat for the senior class. Her
understanding of the traditions that mean so much to the CMH community truly runs deep as four of her
six children graduated from Catholic Memorial (Sarah Petre Helton ‘03, Laura Petre McGaver ‘05, Matthew
Petre ‘13 and Hannah Petre ‘15).

“I came to Catholic Memorial excited to work in Campus Ministry because Catholic Identity is the
foundation of the school’s values. We accomplished a lot this past year by making in-person learning and
continued faith formation through liturgies, sacraments and retreats a top priority. I am proud to be part
8 of this community not only as staff but also as a parent of four CMH graduates.”

SENIOR RETREAT

The senior class came together to reflect
on their time at CMH at their Senior
Retreat. The group was able to go
off-site to St. Joseph Parish in Waukesha

memories for a lifetime. We were so
happy to give them this memorable
experience. Thank you to the volunteers
