ALUMNI WORKING AT CMH

SUE EXNER RUF ’69
Learning Resource Teacher

“As a teacher at CMH, I enjoy
fostering a positive
relationship with the students I
work with in the Academic
Resource Center. Students
who come to the ARC to study
or to get help need to feel that they are accepted and valued
as well as they need to trust that they will get academic
support. Inclusiveness is one of the eight Memorial Way
values that is important to me on a daily basis because
students need a welcoming, safe place where they belong
and where they can learn. Having an inclusive culture is
essential to supporting students’ academic success.”

TOM YOUNG ’80
Spanish Teacher
“Catholic Memorial is my
home. It is where my family
and I all went to school. When
I heard of the opportunity to
teach here, I knew that it was
the Lord nudging me back
home. Only in a Catholic school can you teach to all of the
students’ needs. Being able to incorporate prayer and
spirituality into my teaching is paramount. Our Catholic faith
is an integral part of Hispanic culture. As a Spanish teacher, it
certainly helps to be able to discuss that freely in the
classroom. I tell people all the time, somewhat jokingly, that I
feel like Marty McFly/Michael J Fox from “Back to the
Future.” Some things certainly have not changed, which is
great, yet having former students’ and players’ children now
in my class and on my team is quite strange. In all
seriousness, it means the world to me to be back at CMH
teaching. I love this place!”
JULIE KOLINSKE ESSER ’10
Math Teacher

Catholic Memorial is the second school I have worked at and this was my second
year teaching, but the impact the school had on me has not faded. It was a family
tradition to be a Crusader and a school all six of us were proud to attend. My mother
even went to CMH. The high-standing academics and athletics were driving factors.
However, the faith aspect is what sets Catholic Memorial apart. The discipline and
rigor of the school pushes students to be their best. All of these aspects are reasons
I have wanted to teach at CMH since I left in 2010. The teachers are amazing and I
now get to work with and learn from their example. It truly is an amazing school. The
friends I have made at CMH are still many of the friends I have today. We are family.

STEVE PLECHATY ’74
Dean of Students

Out of all the schools I could
have worked at, I chose to
come back to Catholic
Memorial. I chose to come
back because as a student,
Catholic Memorial offers a
community of shared family values. Through classmates and
mentors, while I was here, l learned integrity, faith, empathy,
gratitude and hard work. Now as Dean of Students, I
appreciate the nurturing relationships at Catholic Memorial
and sense a responsibility to pay these values forward.

MATT BERGAN ’02
Gym & Health Teacher,
Incoming Athletic Director
Effective 7/1/17
“I came back to Memorial
because I saw so many coaches
and teachers who are
extremely passionate about
what they do. I wanted to go somewhere where I could
make a difference and give back to a community that has
given so much to me. Catholic Memorial is a special place in
which myself and other fellow alumni have a tremendous
amount of pride.”

PAIGE SIEHR ’11
Admissions Assistant

“Even after graduation, Catholic Memorial always held a special place in my heart. The Admissions Office
was hiring at the time of my college graduation, and before I knew it, I was back walking the halls of
CMH. I feel an incredible connection with the people I work with because I know that we are all
passionate about Catholic education, and more specifically, Catholic Memorial. One of the best parts
about returning to work at CMH was seeing old teachers who are now my colleagues. The people that
work at Catholic Memorial are people I will always be connected to and will remember for my lifetime.
Everyone who works here is genuinely interested in making Catholic Memorial a community of faith,
strong academics, and a safe place for students to grow. I enjoy coming to work every day and I am
thankful to get to work at the place that helped me to grow into the person I am today.”

CELEBRATING
122 Years

OF SERVICE TO CATHOLIC MEMORIAL

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR MANY DEDICATED YEARS OF SERVICE TO CMH.
CONGRATULATIONS!

MR. GREG GAMALSKI - 43 YEARS
Retirement has come for Greg “Gamo” Gamalski after arriving at CMH in 1974. In his
tenure he has been a teacher, coach and athletic director, and has made a priceless
impact on the students, faculty, coaches and culture of CMH! We cannot thank him
enough for his dedication to Catholic Memorial.
“I remember meeting him that first day of football practice in August 1974. He was trying so hard
to convince us that he was a tough guy. Then soon enough he began to smile and tell us personal
stories. I knew right then that it was going to be a great season/year. The day school started I
walked into my homeroom and there’s Mr. G in the front of the room. Yes! We looked at each
other and I got that great smile from him... Thank you Greg for all you did for me and shared with
me. I hope your sails will be full as you head out to your next horizon.” JIM YOUNG ’78
“The Class of 76’ enjoyed your first two years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring. May you
enjoy many more following a standout career at CMH!” SANDY BRUNNER MILLS ’76
Bill Young, Greg Gamalski and Matt Bergan ‘02

MR. CHRIS ANDACHT - 35 YEARS
Since 1982, Chris Andacht has been making a big impression on students in the
classroom, on the track, and on the stage! For so many students, supply-and-demand
will forever be tied to Mr. Andacht’s Econ classes.
“As a director you helped me create magic on the stage, as father of one of my best friends you
were a parent figure, and as a colleague when I came back to assist with musicals... I got to walk
in the footsteps and relive the memories of creating magic from the other side of the stage. Long
story short, thank you and congratulations!” KRISTIN WACKER ’03

“My high school experience wouldn’t have been the same without Mr. Andacht. He immediately
saw potential in me that I didn’t even see in myself.” MAGGIE THORESON SUDIMACK ’07
Kate Andacht ‘06, Chris Andacht, Maddy Ogren ‘15
and Max Mutza ‘16

MR. BILL AFFELDT - 27 YEARS
We thank Bill Affeldt for his dedication and service to CMH since 1990! His ability to
connect with the students he taught and athletes he coached with his humor and quick
wit will definitely be missed.
“Congrats Mr. Affeldt! You were a great history teacher! So many fun memories of our senior trip
to Europe! And you never missed a chance to make fun of us long distance runners ;) Best wishes
on a well deserved retirement!” MEGHAN KNAPP KINATEDER ’95
“Congrats Bill! I have too many memories to pick a favorite but that ‘96 track state championship
certainly is among them. You and Gabes are the reason I chose to go into teaching and coaching,
best wishes!” MIKE MANEY ’96
Tom New and Bill Affeldt

MRS. DIANE HYDE - 17 YEARS

Diane Hyde came to CMH in 2000. She is one of Memorial’s most caring souls
and became like a second mother to many in her classes and activities. You
always knew you would have a genuine interaction with Diane!
“OH MY GOSH! D Hyde! Loved having you as a teacher. Congratulations and best of luck
to you!!” CARRIE SEIBEL ’08
“Congratulations Diane!! Thank you for your dedication to children and inspiring so
many!!” ANN PAYANT, ALUMNI PARENT
