Gene therapy

is an experimental technique that
uses genes to treat or prevent
disease. In the future, this technique
may allow doctors to treat a disorder
by inserting a gene into a patient’s
cells instead of using drugs or
surgery,designed to introduce genetic
material into cells to compensate for
abnormal genes or to make a
beneficial protein. If a mutated gene
causes a necessary protein to be
faulty or missing, gene therapy may
be able to introduce a normal copy of
the gene to restore the function of
the protein.

The possibilities of gene therapy hold much promise. Clinical
trials of gene therapy in people have shown some success in
treating certain diseases, such as:
• -Severe combined immune de ciency
• -Hemophilia
• -Blindness caused by
• retinitis
• pigmentosa
• -Leukemia
But several signi cant barriers
stand in the way of gene
therapy becoming a reliable
form of treatment, including:
• -Finding a reliable way to
• get genetic material into
• cells
• -Targeting the correct cells
• -Reducing the risk of side
• effects
Gene therapy continues to be a
very important and active area
of research aimed at developing
new, effective treatments
for a variety of diseases.
