I CARE HEALTHTransient Global Amnesia (TGA) is a condition characterised by sudden memory loss, particularly affecting awareness of time, place, and recent events—known as episodic memory. During an episode, patients often appear confused, repeatedly asking questions such as what has happened, when it occurred, or how they arrived at a place. Despite these symptoms, they remain conscious, can function independently, and retain other types of memory.Memory loss may involve both past events and those occurring during the episode. Symptoms typically improve on their own, with most patients regaining memory within 1–24 hours, and experiencing no lasting effects. Although the exact cause remains unknown, available evidence suggests, that venous congestion in memory storage area of the brain called hippocampus is the cause of TGA. The associated conditions include age 50-80, particularly those with a history of migraines, heart disease, high stress, intense emotional experiences, or strenuous physical activity prior to onset.Although TGA resolves on its own, accurate diagnosis by a specialist is essential, as similar symptoms are linked to various health issues including a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), epilepsy, migraine, head injury, or psychiatric disorders—each requiring different treatment approaches. Diagnosis typically involves medical history, physical examination, and possibly an MRI scan performed 48–72 hours after onset, which may reveal small, stroke-like lesions in some cases. In most cases, patients return to normal within 24 hours and do not require medication. However, if memory problems occur more frequently or worsen progressively, see a doctor immediately to check for other possible causes. TGA is not considered a warning sign of Alzheimer’s disease and does not increase future risk.A Stroke occurs when the brain’s blood supply is abruptly disrupted - either by a blockage or by bleeding – leading to a deprivation of oxygen and essential nutrients which result in rapid danger to brain cells. There are two main types: Ischemic Stroke (caused by blockage) and Hemorrhagic Stroke (caused by bleeding). Both are medical emergencies requiring immediate treatment.Key warning signs include facial drooping, slurred or incoherent speech, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden severe headache, and vision problems such as double vision or blurred sight. If any of these symptoms occur seek immediate medical attention as acute stroke treatment prioritizes restoring blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible. For Ischemic Stroke, thrombolytic drugs (rt-PA) should be administered within 4.5 hours, or mechanical thrombectomy may be performed within 6–24 hours. For Hemorrhagic Stroke, treatment focuses on blood pressure control and, if necessary, surgery. The sooner treatment is received, the greater the chance of recovery and the lower the risk of permanent brain damage. After a stroke, patients may experience complications such as paralysis, speech and swallowing difficulties, depression, respiratory or urinary infections, and pressure sores. Such complications require close monitoring and comprehensive care by a multidisciplinary team. Rehabilitation—especially within the first 1–6 months—is critical, as the brain actively adapts and forms new neural pathways to replace the damaged ones during this period. The critical window offers the best opportunity for recovery. Therefore, patients should undergo various forms of therapy, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and functional training, to maximize their ability to return to activities of daily living. “The Golden” Period is the phase during which patients will experience the most significant recovery.Patients should also change their lifestyle to prevent recurrence, managing risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It is recommended that they stop smoking, avoid alcohol drinking, maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and strictly follow prescribed medications.Yuttachai Likitjaroen, Asst. Medical treatments for musculoskeletal conditions in the “Silver Age” population have now become much better than before. With modern medical technology, well-equipped Sukumvit Hospital offers two types of specialised skeletal care for the “Silver Age” generation: comprehensive prevention and effective treatment. One common group of conditions is related to osteoporosis. As people age—especially women after menopause begins around the age of 45, bone density decreases more rapidly, increasing fracture risk. Without preventive care, fractures may occur after 60.Sukumvit Hospital’s comprehensive programes cover bone density screening, annual monitoring, lifestyle guidance such as increased calcium and vitamin D intake, and exercise to maintain healthy bones. If osteoporosis leads to bone fractures, medical injections will be prescribed. Today, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is also available. Through small incisions, MIS injects bone cement to stabilise fractures and enables immediate pain relief. Patients can often stand the next day and return home after just one night in the hospital—unlike traditional methods requiring metal rods and long screws, which can potentially lead to bone collapse and spinal curvature. Modern bone cement injections are also much safer. In cases of multiple fractures, fixation screws can be inserted without the need for major open surgery. The other common condition involves degenerative joint diseases affecting the knees, shoulders, wrists, ankles, hips, and especially the spine, where nerve compression may occur. Today, endoscopic spine surgery (PSLD – Percutaneous Stenoscopic Lumbar Decompression) allows treatment through incisions smaller than 1 cm. Unlike traditional open surgery, which required an incision of at least 10 cm. and bilateral muscle dissection, modern endoscopic techniques allow the camera to move along natural muscle planes without cutting them. This approach minimizes tissue damage and blood loss, provides clear visualization of nerves, and significantly speeds up recovery. As “Silver Age” adults remain active, minimally invasive procedures allow them to return faster to their activities or travels. This treatment is not limited to older adults, as it is also useful to young patients with office syndrome or sports injuries.Child development is not only about physical growth. In fact, it encompasses emotional, social, and cognitive progress. Medical evaluation typically considers a few key areas for child development: gross motor skills, fine motor skills, language, self-care, social interaction, and intelligence. The first two years of life mark the most rapid developmental period. Children gradually gain control from head to body to legs—progressing from lifting the head, rolling over, sitting, crawling, standing, to walking and running. Fine motor skills develop alongside, from grasping and pointing to more complex tasks. Language skills begin with recognizing the voices of caregivers, responding to their own names, following simple instructions, babbling, and eventually forming meaningful words. Learning at this stage occurs through sensory experiences and movement.During early childhood (2–7 years), children become more physically active and coordinated, able to run, jump, climb, and engage in basic sports. Fine motor skills improve, enabling drawing, dressing, and buttoning clothes. Their language skills become more complex, allowing clear communication. With strong imagination and concrete thinking, children at this stage should not be threatened or misled, as they may perceive it as reality.School-age children (7–11 years) begin to understand logic, relationships, and abstract concepts more clearly, though they still rely on concrete examples. Peer relationships become increasingly important. In this age range, children can work as a group and address more complex topics.Adolescents (12–20 years) start forming their identity and acquiring a greater understanding of abstract concepts. However, emotional development often outpaces rational control. As peer influence also becomes significant, adolescents are more prone to risk-taking behaviours. Nevertheless, the influence of families remains strong. Parents should refer to developmental guidelines such as the child health handbook, the “Developmental Surveillance” and Promotion Manual (DSPM), or resources from the Royal College of Pediatricians of Thailand. If a child shows developmental delays or regression (e.g., losing previously acquired skills like speaking or walking), or has a history of serious illness, medical consultation is recommended—especially for language delays, which are common. Routine developmental screening is recommended at 9, 18, and 30 months, and at least once between ages 4–5. The critical window for developmental stimulation is before age 5 or 6—the earlier the intervention, the greater the child’s potential for full development.Development may seem like small steps each day, but every step matters. Careful observation, understanding, and appropriate support are among the meaningful gifts parents can give—laying the foundation for a healthy body and mind in the future.Poonsak Artamnuayvipas, M.D. Orthopedic and Spine Specialist“SMALL INCISIONS, FASTER RECOVERY WITH NEW OPTION FOR SPINE SURGERY IN THE SILVER AGE”Ruaywan Suntiwes, M.D. Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician“HOW TO TELL IF YOUR CHILD HAS DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS”9 ISSUE 332026

I EAT HEALTHYIn medical science, the efficiency of nutrition is not determined solely by nutrient intake but also by bioavailability which refers to how well the body can use consumed nutrients. When multiple nutrients are present in the digestive system at the same time, they can interact in ways that either enhance each other’s benefits or interfere with absorption, leading to reduced nutritional value.• Recommended pairing: Spinach salad with fresh lemon juice, or oranges with meals containing meat or whole grains1.2 Vitamin D and Calcium for Calcium Homeostasis: Calcium is a mineral that is difficult to absorb without assistance. Vitamin D stimulates the production of a protein called Calbindin in the intestinal cells, which functions like a “carrier” that transports calcium into the bloodstream. Without sufficient Vitamin D, the Calcium absorption rate may decrease to as low as 10–15%.• Recommended pairing: Salmon (a source of Vitamin D) served with dairy products or Calcium-rich vegetables such as kale or spinach 1. Nutrient SynergyNutrient synergy refers to a biochemical phenomenon in which one nutrient enhances the absorption, transport, or cellular uptake of another. This interaction plays a crucial role in resolving nutrient deficiencies.Examples of Nutrient Synergy1.1 Vitamin C and Iron for Iron Bioavailability: Plant-based iron (Non-heme iron) found in leafy greens and legumes, is typically absorbed at a low rate of only 2–20%. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) acts as a reducing agent, converting iron into its ferrous form (Fe²+), which is more soluble and best suited for absorption in the small intestine.I EAT HEALTHYBiochemical Mechanisms for Optimal AbsorptionScience of Nutrient“Pairing”A PUBLICATIONOF HEALTHY & LIFESTYLE 14

References•World Health Organization (WHO): Vitamin and Mineral Requirements in Human Nutrition.•Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition: Enhancing Bioavailability of Nutrients.• Caution: Do not consume large amounts of “high-oxalate” vegetables in raw form together with calcium supplements.2.3 Calcium and Iron-induced Competitive Inhibition: From a biochemical perspective, calcium and iron share the same absorption pathway (DMT1). When calcium intake exceeds 300 mg. in a single meal, it can compete for and block this pathway, preventing iron from being absorbed.• Caution: Avoid taking iron supplements together with high in milk meals or dairy products. If your meal must include anti-nutritional factors, there are ways to curb unwanted impacts as follows: 1.3 Fats and Phytonutrients for Lipid-assisted Absorption: Phytonutrients such as lycopene (found in tomatoes) and beta-carotene (found in carrots) are hydrophobic. In other words, they do not dissolve in water. When consumed with fatty acids, they are incorporated into micelles, allowing them to pass through the lymphatic system and enter the bloodstream.• Recommended pairing: Tomatoes cooked with olive oil, or a carrot salad combined with avocado 2. Anti-nutritional Factors Anti-nutritional factors are natural compounds that interfere with the digestion or absorption of nutrients, because of complex formation or competitive inhibition.Examples of Anti-nutritional Factors 2.1 Phytates and Tannins: Commonly found in whole grains, tea, and coffee, these compounds bind with positively charged minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium, forming insoluble complexes in the digestive tract.• Caution: Drinking strong tea or coffee with main meals can reduce iron absorption by as much as 60–70%.2.2 Oxalic Acid: Found in certain leafy greens such as spinach and wild betel leaves, oxalic acid reacts with calcium in the intestine and forms calcium oxalate. This not only reduces calcium absorption but also increases the risk of kidney stone formation. While an understanding of nutrient synergy and interference can help us maximize the benefits of what we eat, the most important principle is having a varied and balanced diet in appropriate portions. The human body is complex and requires different nutrients at different times. Focusing too narrowly on specific nutrient pairings may lead to imbalance. Therefore, consuming a well-rounded diet from all five food groups, rotating ingredients with the seasons, and avoiding excessive intake of any single type of food are the most sustainable ways to maintain good health.Food preparation: Soaking legumes can reduce phytate levels, while applying heat (boiling or steaming) can break down oxalic acid in vegetables by 30–80%.Nutrient timing: Allow at least a 2-hour gap between mineral-rich meals and beverages containing tannins (such as tea or coffee) or calcium supplements.Use of an enhancer: Adding vitamin C to meals can help counteract the binding effects of phytates and improve iron availability.TipsByMr. Narong Termpornlert,Dietitian15 ISSUE 332026

I UPDATEWhile movement is essential to rehabilitation, many patients are not yet ready for land-based exercise—whether due to pain, weakness, or fear of falling. Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Therapy) presents itself as an alternative, allowing patients to begin rehabilitation earlier in a safe environment that minimizes physical impact. What Is Hydrotherapy and How Does It Work?Hydrotherapy involves exercise and movement training in water under the supervision of rehabilitation specialists, such as rehabilitation physician and physical therapists. Programs are individually designed to improve muscle strength, balance, flexibility, and motor control. The key principle lies in using the natural properties of water to reduce physical limitations. For example, patients who have difficulty walking on land may begin walking exercises in water first so that they gradually build confidence and mobility. With increasing life expectancy, a growing number of patients live with degenerative joint conditions and chronic diseases. With the concept of early mobilization, Low-impact exercise has become a safe and effective rehabilitation tool. How Is “Water-Based” Rehabilitation Different from Land-Based Therapy? Both approaches share the same goal. They, however, may be applied at different stages of recovery.• Water reduces joint loading. • It lowers the risk of falls, allowing patients to move with greater confidence. • Natural resistance in water helps strengthen muscles without the need for heavy equipment. That said, land-based therapy remains essential, as daily activities take place on solid ground. The most effective rehabilitation programs often combine both approaches.Water-based Rehabilitation Hydrotherapy: Gentle Yet PowerfulExamples of “water-based” exercises Safe patient transfer into the pool by a physical therapist Walking and balance training in water A PUBLICATIONOF HEALTHY & LIFESTYLE 16

The Therapeutic Power of WaterHydrotherapy is based on several key properties of water:• Buoyancy: It reduces body weight, making movement easier and less painful. • Resistance: It provides gentle muscle strengthening. • Hydrostatic pressure: It helps reduce swelling and improve stability. •Warm water temperature: It relaxes muscles while easing tension and pain. Patients can begin hydrotherapy once wounds have healed, and after an assessment by a rehabilitation physician or rehabilitation team has reviewed their strength, balance, and safety. In particular, individuals with open wounds, infections, unstable Cardiopulmonary conditions, or severe dizziness should always undergo careful evaluation before starting. For patient safety, all sessions should be conducted under professional supervision.Hydrotherapy is a gentle yet highly effective rehabilitation tool. It enables patients to begin early mobilization, reduces pain, and builds confidence in returning to daily life. When combined appropriately with land-based therapy, it supports smooth and sustainable recovery journey. ByHassanai Banthadtham, M.D. Specialist in Rehabilitation MedicineAlthough hydrotherapy may appear simple, its effectiveness depends on well-designed rehabilitation environments, including specialized pools, handrails, flotation devices, and functional assessments such as gait and balance evaluation. Equally important is the development of individualized programs, which is at the core of modern rehabilitation medicine.Muscle training with exercise balls Group hydrotherapy sessions Exercises using flotation devices • Patients with musculoskeletal conditions, such as joint pain, knee osteoarthritis, or chronic back pain, and patients recovering from joint, tendon or bone surgery; • Neurological patients, such as those with paralysis, partial paralysis or Parkinson’s disease; • Older adults seeking “low-impact” exercise; and Athletes in the early stages of rehabilitation. or feeding under the guidance of nurses, also helps prepare parents for bringing their baby home.• Parental Stress Reduction The NICU emphasizes reducing parental stress, as it affects not only the baby’s emotional well-being but also their overall recovery. Clear communication and opportunities for small interactions such as reading to or gently touching in order to the baby add positive energy to the healing process. I KIDS1. Holistic Care: When Love Becomes Part of HealingCare in the NICU goes beyond stabilizing vital signs; it also supports the baby’s brain development and emotional well-being.• Developmental Care - The NICU focuses on creating an environment as close as possible to the “womb,” including careful control of light, sound, and temperature, as well as positioning the baby to feel constantly supported and held, promoting optimal brain and nervous system development.• Kangaroo Care - At the heart of holistic care is skin-to-skin contact, which helps stabilize heart rate, improve oxygen levels, and foster a deep emotional bond that no technology can replace.• Family-Centered Care - The NICU ensures parents are not “visitors,” but “essential members of the care team.” Participating in care activities, such as changing diapers A PUBLICATIONOF HEALTHY & LIFESTYLE 18When the doors of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) open, the scene can be overwhelming for parents. Some newborns weigh less than a kilogram, resting inside incubators and surrounded by life-support equipment. Yet, behind these advanced technologies lies a deeply compassionate philosophy of care-Holistic and Personalized NICU Care-grounded in the belief that “newborn patients need more than ventilators; they need touch, warmth, and care designed specifically for them.” “Combination of Advanced Technology and Caring Hearts” New Dimension of Holistic and PersonalizedCare for Critically Newborns

2. Personalized Care: Precision for the Most Fragile LivesEach newborn has unique conditions, requiring care that is carefully “tailored” to their delicate and tiny bodies. • Neonatal Precision Medicine - The NICU uses detailed diagnostic data to select the most appropriate medications and treatment plans, helping reduce long-term complications.• Personalized Nutrition & Breast Milk - This is a pillar of the NICU care. During critical stages, infants require intravenous nutrition. As recovery begins, breast milk becomes the most valuable nourishment This is something that no technology can replace. Medical teams therefore provide guidance and support for proper breastfeeding.Personalized care also includes selecting the most suitable medications, ventilators, and treatment approaches for each patient. The best care is not necessarily the most expensive, but the one delivered at the right moment and in the right way by a team of medical specialists.3. The Journey Home: Continuing Care After NICU DischargeThe day a baby leaves the NICU marks a major milestone. However, our care does not end there. Infants who have gone through critical conditions require a follow-up program to closely monitor their development, assessing movement, communication, and growth along with specialized screenings, such as:• Hearing and retinal examinations for premature infants• Monitoring for respiratory complications• Nutritional adjustments to support appropriate weight gainSystematic follow-up enables the early detection of any abnormalities and allows for timely intervention, maximizing the child’s developmental potential. The NICU journey is often compared to a “marathon,” not a sprint. our Holistic and personalized care, combined with medical precision and continuous follow-up, allows little fighters not only to survive, but to grow strong, achieve a good quality of life, and return to the warm embrace of their families. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is not only about “firmness,” but also “endurance” - factors that significantly impact a man’s confidence and the overall quality of life for both partners. Today, treatment approaches go beyond temporary solutions, focusing instead on restoring the body’s natural function. This begins with two key components: I LOVE TECHNOLOGY 1. Lifestyle Medicine•Maintain a healthy, balanced diet.•Exercise regularly and get sufficient sleep.•Avoid smoking, alcohol, and harmful substances.•Manage underlying conditions such as diabetes and hypertension effectively.2. Medication Therapy: The use of PDE5 inhibitors, such as Viagra or Cialis, helps dilate blood vessels and improve firmness during sexual activity.Shock Wave-Enabled Rehabilitation Innovation In addition to lifestyle modifications and medications, “Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy” (Li-ESWT) is also an important regenerative treatment option. How It Works and What Sets It Apart•Mechanism of Action: Low-intensity sound waves are delivered through the skin, creating cellular-level resonance, to stimulate stem cells and activate the body’s natural repair processes in tissues and blood vessels.•Difference from Medication: Conventional medications provide temporary results (by enhancing blood flow during sexual activity). In contrast, “Shock Wave Therapy” - functioning as regenerative treatmentfocuses on improving the structure and function of damaged blood vessels and nerves. Isn’t it better to be able to achieve firmness naturally, especially in situations where taking medication may not be possible?Restoring Male Sexual Performance with Focus ESWT (Focused Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy): a medical device used to treat erectile dysfunctionShock Wave TechnologyA PUBLICATIONOF HEALTHY & LIFESTYLE 20

•Angiogenesis: Shock waves stimulate the release of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), a protein that promotes the formation of new blood vessels and supports vascular health. VEGF plays a vital role in repairing tissue and creating new capillary networks, leading to sustainably improved blood circulation and a natural ability to “be firm” on demand.Who Is Suitable for Shock Wave Therapy?“Shock Wave Therapy” is recommended for patients with vasculogenic ED where the condition is related to blood vessel health-such as those with diabetes, hypertension, or aging-related decline, as well as patients with reduced responsiveness to medication. However, its effectiveness may be limited in cases involving severe psychological causes, nerve damage from prostate cancer surgery, or untreated severe male hormone deficiency.Treatment Process and Results“Shock Wave Therapy” involves sending shock waves to the penile and groin areas using a specialized device. It is noninvasive, requires no surgery or anesthesia, and typically causes only mild discomfort. Each session lasts approximately 15–20 minutes, with no special preparation required. Patients can resume normal activities, including sexual activity, immediately afterward.Unlike medication, which works within 30–45 minutes, our “Shock Wave Therapy” produces gradual results. Treatment is usually administered over 6–12 sessions, once or twice per week. Improvements are often noticeable after the third or fourth session, such as increased morning erections and better natural firmness. This treatment is considered highly safe, with minimal side effects. Mild redness may occur but typically resolves naturally within 24 hours. There are no risks associated with radiation or chemicals.“Shock Wave Therapy” enables men to regain natural erectile function without the need to plan ahead for medication. With the ability to improve men’s mental well-being, ease their anxiety, and strengthen their relationships with their partners, Shock Wave today ranks among modern medical innovations that help restore men’s confidence and enhance their quality of life.Focus ESWT delivers focused, high-intensity, low-energy sound waves precisely to targeted areas for treatment.ByVorawat Eawsinphanit, M.D.Director, Rehabilitation Medicine Center21 ISSUE 332026

I MEDICAL CENTERUnderstanding Office Syndrome to Tackle the Right CausePain from “Habits”: When Body Repeats the Same Strain Every DayOffice Syndrome refers to a group of painful conditions caused by prolonged use of muscles in the same position, such as sitting for long periods without movement or stretching. Common symptoms include:• Neck, shoulder, and back pain.• Muscle trigger points. • Radiating pain to the head or arms.• Persistent fatigue throughout the day. While these symptoms may start mildly, without proper care, they can gradually impact both work performance and overall quality of life in the long term. Chronic Pain… May Be More Than Just Soreness””In today’s real work environment, spending long hours in front of a computer has become the norm. Yet, many people overlook the “small aches” that accumulate day after day—whether in the neck, shoulders, or back. At first, these symptoms may feel like simple soreness. But if left untreated, they can develop into chronic pain that affects daily life. A PUBLICATIONOF HEALTHY & LIFESTYLE 22

Hidden Major Causes You May Not RealizeOne of the main contributors to Office Syndrome is “everyday behavior” that is repeated unconsciously, such as:• Poor posture (e.g., slouching, rounded shoulders, or constantly looking down at a screen)• Repetitive muscle use, such as typing or using a mouse• Working continuously without breaks or stretching• Accumulated stress, leading to muscle tension—especially in the neck, shoulders, and around the eyesOver time, these repetitive habits create muscular imbalance, leading to tightness, strain, and eventually chronic pain. Our Rehabilitation Medicine Center, at Sukumvit Hospital Involves Comprehensive Care, Targeted RecoveryWhen you experience similar symptoms, it does not mean your underlying causes are the same. Factors involved include gender, age, body structure, and lifestyle. The Rehabilitation Medicine Center at Sukumvit Hospital, therefore places emphasis on comprehensive assessment to identify the true root cause of pain, with rehabilitation physicians and physical therapists working together as a team to develop individual treatment plans for each patient. Our Personalized Rehabilitation Programs cover assessment, treatment, and long-term behavioral adjustment.Do Not Normalize “Pain”Many people become accustomed to pain, assuming it is simply part of working life. In reality, leaving it untreated can lead to chronic conditions that are more difficult to recover from. Starting care early with accurate diagnosis and treatment focused on the right cause can help you return to living life fully once again. I had to put in a lot of effort just to stand or move, and eventually, I couldn’t walk at all. Having regularly received treatment at Sukumvit Hospital, I trust their advanced technology and experienced doctors. When the pain became unbearable, I went to the hospital for treatment under the care of Dr.Supachai. An MRI scan showed clear nerve compression and narrowing of my spinal canal. The doctor explained that while physical With running exercise, in his veins, a man developed a herniated disc condition and underwent open spinal surgery 17 years ago. Following that operation, he had curbed his workouts. Yet, his job in the field of training and teaching eventually led to a recurrence. When he sought treatment at Sukumvit Hospital, a spine specialist recommended an advanced surgical technique known as OLIF (Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion). therapy was an option, the symptoms might persist or recur. Personally, I wanted a long-term solution, so he recommended spinal fusion surgery. I stayed in the hospital for about two days following the procedure. After returning home, the pain was completely gone. I no longer experience pain when walking.”Supachai Samphan, M.D., Orthopedic and Spine Specialist, further explained: “When a patient has a history of a herniated disc compressing a nerve, it indicates the beginning of spinal degeneration. Continuous or repetitive use—whether prolonged sitting or intensive exercise can accelerate this degeneration, increasing the risk of further nerve compression, both at previously affected segments and new ones. From the patient’s medical history, physical examination, and MRI of the lumbar spine, we found degeneration and collapse at the previously affected L4 and L5 segments with narrowing of the spinal canal and significant disc protrusion compressing the nerve. The patient also experienced increased leg pain and numbness, including anterior thigh discomfort. Additionally, degeneration had developed around L3–L4 segments, further worsening the symptoms and significantly impacting daily life.“There are various treatment options. We initially employed non-surgical approaches, including medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications. However, when the symptoms did not improve, we discussed surgical intervention. We finally selected OLIF spinal fusion, a technique that stabilizes the spine by inserting screws from behind. Patients are able to stand, walk, and resume daily activities soon after surgery. Typically, bone fusion becomes solid within 3–4 months, and during the early recovery phase, light exercise is recommended. At Sukumvit Hospital, our OLIF surgery is performed through a lateral approach to the spine. This highly effective technique offers minimal blood loss, less muscle trauma, and faster recovery, allowing patients to return home and resume their normal daily lives sooner.”For those experiencing back pain, leg pain, numbness, or weakness caused by degenerative or herniated discs, these symptoms should not be ignored. Early consultation with a specialist is essential. At Sukumvit Hospital’s Spine Center, patients have access to both our medical specialists and advanced diagnostic tools such as MRI and modern surgical technologies, ensuring effective and comprehensive care.BySupachai Samphan, M.D. Orthopedic and Spine Specialist25 ISSUE 332026

I EASY STEPAs the prostate enlarges, it grows around the urethra, compressing both the urethra and bladder. This can lead to bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and result in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), such as frequent urination, weak urinary stream, interrupted flow, incontinence, nocturia, and difficulty initiating urination. If left untreated, complications may occur, including bladder stones, bladder diverticulum (formation of pouches from the bladder wall), chronic urinary tract infections, urinary retention, and recurrent inability to urinate. In advanced stages, increased bladder pressure can affect the kidneys function, potentially leading to kidney damage.Avoiding Treatment Limits Quality of LifeSome patients choose not to seek treatment due to fear. Some are afraid they could be diagnosed with cancer or required to face surgery and potential complications. Some others, meanwhile, are worried about discussing symptoms, especially with female physicians, or undergoing rectal examinations. These patients usually try to adjust their lifestyle to cope with symptoms, often unknowingly limiting their quality of life. This may include reducing fluid intake while travelling, avoiding drinking water Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, is a common condition among aging men. Many consider it as a normal part of growing older and choose to live with its symptoms. However, leaving it untreated may lead to unexpected long-term effects on quality of life. An enlarged prostate is found in approximately 50% of men aged 60 and above, increasing to 70–80% in those aged 70 to 80. On average, the prostate typically measures only 15–20 grams when men are around 20. at night, being unable to drive for more than two hours without stopping for a restroom, experiencing disrupted sleep due to frequent nighttime urination, avoiding places without easy access to restrooms, reducing participation in outdoor activities such as golf, or even withdrawing from social interactions altogether.UroLift Surgery: Fast Recovery and High SafetyTraditionally, BPH treatment has involved two main approaches. The first is medication, which can be alpha-blockers that relax muscles or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors that manage male hormones. These medications, so far, may cause side effects such as retrograde ejaculation While these methods offer faster recovery than open surgery, patients typically still require 1–2 days of hospitalization and several weeks of reduced activity.Today, newer minimally invasive treatments use different forms of energy, including water vapor (Rezum), microwave, ultrasound, and laser. The latest innovation, however, is UroLift, a procedure that allows rapid recovery without hospitalization. After UroLift is performed, patients can return to normal life quickly. The procedure is also very safe, with no adverse effects on sexual function. An enlarged prostate is not simply a disease, it is a sign of declining health that can significantly impact quality of life and lead to complications. Delayed treatment often results in more complex conditions. So, if you experience symptoms, consult a specialist early for proper evaluation, advice, and treatment. Prof. MD., Colorectal SurgeonOn May 1, 2024 my grandma fell and fractured the upper part of her femur. She underwent surgery for plate-based internal fixation at a hospital in Mandalay, Myanmar. However, two months after the first operation, the fracture had not healed well. The doctor then recommended a second surgery involving bone grafting. But even after the second procedure and a long recovery period, the fractured parts still did not properly unite. My grandma then decided to come to Sukumvit Hospital in July 2025 for another operation. Upon examination, it was found that the metal plate from the previous surgery had loosened, with screws coming out of place—causing her significant pain. At Sukumvit Hospital, she experienced no pain at all both during and after the surgery. She felt very comfortable. Rehabilitation began on the second day after the surgery at the hospital’s Rehabilitation Center under the close supervision of the medical team. It has continued to this day. As for a full recovery, it will depend on her bone condition, which will be monitored over time. The first symptom I noticed was slight urinary leakage upon waking up about two years ago. I came to Sukumvit Hospital for a check-up and was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The doctor prescribed medication, but it didn’t improve my condition much and caused dizziness due to the resulting changes in blood pressure. At that time, my symptoms were still manageable, so I stopped taking the medication and continued with my normal routine. However, about three months ago, my condition worsened—I had to strain to urinate and felt incomplete emptying. I decided to consult a specialist again. The doctor explained the available treatment options and recommended the UroLift procedure, which is minimally invasive, requires no catheter, and allows patients to return home on the same day. I chose this method. On the day of the procedure, I arrived in the morning and was able to go home in the afternoon—everything was smoothly completed within a single day. Two weeks after the treatment, my symptoms improved significantly. The urinary leakage disappeared, I could urinate normally, and for the first time, I felt complete relief after urination. I am very satisfied with the results. I would like to advise all men that if you experience any urinary issues, do not ignore them. Early treatment is always better than delayed care. Getting checked early can truly prevent bigger problems in the future.I went for my annual health check-up, and the results showed blood in my stool. At first, I thought it might be due to stress. However, the doctor informed me that both stool tests showed the same abnormality and strongly advised further investigation. I then underwent a colonoscopy, performed by Dr.Varocha, who found a large tumor—diagnosed as colon cancer. After beginning treatment at Sukumvit Hospital, Dr.Songphol explained the surgical procedure in detail, including which parts would be removed, even illustrating it for me. The surgery would take approximately 4–5 hours. Before the operation, I wasn’t too worried, assuming it would require open surgery. However, the doctor explained that the incision would be small thanks to laparoscopic techniques. I was neither worried nor reluctant. Health check-ups are extremely important—and choosing the right place matters just as much. Whether in Thailand or Japan, cancer is the same. I believe it is best to undergo screening at a hospital that can provide immediate cancer treatment if needed. Don’t assume that affordable health check-up programs won’t detect serious conditions. In my case, early detection made timely treatment possible.”A PUBLICATIONOF HEALTHY & LIFESTYLE 30
