What are families most focused on during the various
stages of the life journey of their children who have
disabilities and special health care needs? For many
families this process starts when their children are in
the 0-3 age range but continues as they move through
the K-12 education system and beyond. Attendees will
learn about how parents navigate diagnosis, engage
service providers, get educational supports like IEPs and
other school districts supports in place and support
their children into adulthood. There will be a particular
focus on understanding what this journey looks like at
the pre-school level, K-5 level, middle school/high

The development of the growing brain is one of the
most important topics in early childhood development
with significant implications for early childhood
education professionals. The greatest rate of brain
growth and development occurs, when the child is
making critical connections with his outside world.
Early experiences matter. Zero-To-Three in partnership
with the University of Arkansas Early Care and
Education Projects, developed the Growing Brain
curriculum. There are seven units. This presentation
will address unit 2. The Growing Brain: The factors
affecting brain growth and development with the goal
to understand the different factors that affect brain
growth and development, including attachment, toxic
stress among others. This presentation covers brain
development from conception through 5-years-old.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to understand the different
factors that affect brain growth and development,
including attachment, toxic stress among others.
Participants will be able to discuss brain development
by using the chat function and verbal responses.
Participants will be able to make meaning of brain
development by working in small group breakout rooms.

Join Science is Elementary (SiE) for an engaging hands-
on workshop. We will use SiE Books to demonstrate
how science, engineering, and literacy can be
integrated in an early childhood classroom. We will
start with a social story to introduce a phenomenon,
and continue with experiential engineering activities.
We’ll also discuss how to build academic language
while doing engineering and how to help young children
think scientifically.

When you register, a list of inexpensive materials you
can bring with you to the workshop will create a
"hands-on" activity (less than $5 per participant).
Please have them with you to ensure that we can all
explore together!

Learning Outcomes:
Attendees will be able to:
Introduce a scientific phenomenon using a social
story
Extend experiments presented by adding activities
with suggested materials
Use at least two scientific practices in their
classrooms

We have long understood that the public education
classroom reflects society. COVID-19, overt racism,
and divisive political ideologies have all combined to
create not just individual, collective, and racial
trauma, but a society that seems to have forgot how to
be kind to each other. While there has been a focus on
socio-emotional development and even trauma-
informed practices, these approaches do not
effectively address the need to recognize each other’s
humanity and respond accordingly. They fail to
acknowledge the Human Spirit. As educators of
children and youth we have an opportunity to create
learning spaces that model how to act humanely

toward everyone regardless of their race, culture,
gender, or other characteristics that divide us. This
workshop provides a theoretical framework and
practical strategies for touching the human spirit
using African Ubuntu Pedagogy or A-Up.

In this workshop hosted by veteran educators from
SFUSD's June Jordan School for Equity, participants will
explore the role trust and vulnerability play in
powerful classroom teaching that builds community
and creates an environment for safety and connection.
It is the role of teachers to support students in making
connections with each other as a vehicle to deeper
learning. Participants will learn from veteran
educators what it takes to build a culture in the
classroom where students feel safe to share their
thoughts, dreams, fears and hopes for themselves and
the world.

Learning Outcomes:
Explore the research on relationships in the

Learn strategies for building powerful
relationships with students

Research has proven that teacher quality is the #1 in-
school factor driving student learning outcomes. Yet,
the U.S. has a critical teacher shortage. This impacts
the quantity, quality and diversity of teachers and it's
expected that in the coming years the shortfall will be
upwards of 100,000 teachers. That means hundreds of
thousands of students without a teacher in their
classroom. Teach Navigator exists to change this story.
By offering personalized support and guidance, we are
here to support the next generation of teachers in
realizing their dreams as passionate, effective, change-
making educators. Come learn about how YOU can
become a teacher in San Francisco and uplift your
community.
