MAY 2023 NNOORRTTHHRRUU MAG G A G ZINE BBYY Lymm become 22/23 Regional NW Champions Billingham become 22/23 Regional NE Champions Teams of the Year Announced @northrugby1 @northrugby1

Welcome Welcome to the FIRST edition of the North Rugby Magazine Over the past couple of seasons I have been thinking how do we take the @NorthRugby1 page to the next level. I have thought about Podcasts, YouTube channels etc... but have landed on North Rugbys very own MAGAZINE! I believe this is a great way to experience first hand the passion the clubs have for not only rugby but for their own clubs. The magazine will be about the clubs, players in North Rugby. To the followers. You are the ones that make things happen. I am a huge advocate of this level of rugby and feel that it goes under the radar somewhat. If you have any observations or would like to be considered for one of the future editions please contact me at [email protected] Mike Brown

Player Spotlight Harry Oliver Macclesfield We have been fortunate to have a catch up with the exciting and abrasive centre Harry Oliver, looking at his life on and off the pitch. MB - Harry can you tell how you first became involved with Macclesfield and what your journey and connection with the club has been like to date? HO - I first became involved with Macc when my dad took me and my brother down when we was 4 too play tag. My dad previously played for Macclesfield for over 20 years so I was always going too play there. 16 years on and I’ve managed too play for all the junior age groups and now currently play in the 1st team alongside my brother James, Harry Harding and Will Davies. We were all the same age group in juniors so it’s been nice too come through the ranks at the club with my mates. Me and my brother are both currently Captain and Vice captain so it’s good too have started at U6s and currently captain the squad!

Player Spotlight Harry Oliver Macclesfield MB - What about any ambitions/development plans on and off the pitch? HO - My ambitions on the pitch are too firstly try help Macclesfield gain promotion back into Nat 2. I would like too hopefully play for Cheshire this year and more in the future and keep enjoying my rugby playing with my mates who are a great bunch of lads which have bags of potential! Off the pitch I currently work as a gardener and I really enjoy it, so for now I’m going too be sticking with that as it’s flexible and allows me to always have time for rugby during the week and on weekends! MB - Whats the coaching philosophy at Macclesfield? HO - The philosophy at Macclesfield is to try and develop home grown talent. It's to try and get as many lads turning out for the club on both Saturdays for the seniors and Sundays for the kids. The club want to promote a transition programme to blood colts into the senior sides and bridge the gap between junior and senior rugby which they do an amazing job at! Currently out of my age group there are 15 lads who all still play for the 1s, 2s and 3s which is class. Hopefully the club can keep the production line going in the further years! MB - How is the mood down at Macclesfield? HO - The current mood down at Macc is great. Having not started the season as we wanted, not winning any of our first 5 games, for the lads to have reacted like we have done is class.

Player Spotlight Harry Oliver Macclesfield To manage too finish level on points with Sandbach in 4th was a great achievement having managed to pick up 52 out of a possible 55 points too finish the season. We were also the only team in the league too beat both Lymm and Blackburn who were both competing for promotion which is a nice stat. We’ve also managed to win some silverware which is always nice as we won the Cheshire Cup beating Sandbach in the final 42-26 and being the first Macc side since 2016 too win it! To finish the season with two trophies would be fantastic and would be well deserved recognition for the lads hard work both on Saturdays and Tuesdays Thursdays in the week at practice. MB - Harry , tell me why Macclesfield is such a great club to be part of? HO - Macclesfield is a great cub to be a part of both on and off the pitch. It’s a friendly environment around the club and it’s bouncing on Saturdays as the local fans come out in numbers to cheer us on and have a few beers in the clubhouse after. It’s a great club to be apart of and the clubs got a great plan and structure for the coming years which I’m excited about and can’t wait too be a part of.

Player Spotlight Harry Oliver Macclesfield Quick Fire Questions: Who inspired you to play? The players that I have enjoyed playing with the most for the 1s are my brother and the famous Macc duo Sam Mossy and Billy Robinson Who's good on a night out? I would say the best value on a night out is Harry Harding. He’s always the first one that’s up for getting on the lash and is usually the last one standing (helps being 6ft 6 and 20stone ) Which coach helped you the most? I would say the coach that has had the biggest impact on my career and has helped me the most is Nathan Rushton who was my old school teacher and coach. He is currently playing for Caldy in the Championship Finally.... Whose the longest in the shower? Out of the Macc lads who I have played with over the years I would say that as much as I don’t want too say it, I would have too say that Tom Jennings is the longest in the shower. Honourable mentions go too Josh Redfern, Lloyd Coates and Tom Brand! MB: Thanks for your time Harry!!

REGIONAL 1 NE CHAMPIONS ELLIOTT HUSBAND CAPT 'We set our goals at the start of our the season and we have pretty much hit all of them. There is no denying this is an exceptional senior squad and the results on the pitch show that. I think the exciting part is that we were far from our best in a lot of the games this season. Lifting the league trophy was the proudest moment in my rugby career to date.''

REGIONAL 1 NW CHAMPIONS JAMES YATES CAPT ''To win the league is an incredible achievement, This season was a culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of people over the past 12 years at level 5. It just felt right, the lads played some fantastic rugby, showed real resilience at times and smashed club records, hitting so many milestones. We get such amazing support from our loyal members and supporters so it was really pleasing to deliver something special to everyone involved at the club.''
