WIAA Fun Facts
The WIAA goes back to 1925 to determine the beginning of its boys tennis tournament program. Nicolet leads in number of State team championships with 26 (one a tie),
including eight in a row from 1967- 74. Neenah is a distant second in team titles with 10 (one tie). Marquette and University School of Milwaukee have 10 team titles. Seven of Marquette’s nine titles came consecutively from 2007- 13, and six of University School of Milwaukee’s nines titles came consecutively from 2006-2011. In 1995, a two-division format was adopted for boys tennis, which also included a separate team tournament series based on dual meet competition. The WIAA began sponsoring a tournament program in girls tennis in 1971. The tournament was conducted in a


single-division
format from 1971-
1993. In 1994, the tournament series changed to
a two-division format with separate State Tournaments for team and individual competition. Eight teams in Division 1 and four teams in Division 2 comprise the State Team Tournament eld. Nicolet also leads in overall team titles with 17 State championships in Girls Tennis. Brook eld Central has nine titles; White sh Bay has eight; and University School has won seven.

NIELSON STADIUM
The Wisconsin tennis teams are a orded a competitive advantage by playing year-round at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, ranked by USTA as one of the nest tennis facilities in the country. The stadium features 18 tennis courts (12 indoor and six outdoor), ve singles squash courts, and one squash doubles court. The Nielsen Tennis Stadium was built in 1968 for two

million, and is now valued at nearly nine million. The facility is a tting tribute to Arthur C. Nielsen, founder of the television rating system. Nielsen, a UW graduate in electrical engineering, captained the Wisconsin men’s tennis team from 1916-18. State Tournaments
for boys tennis reportedly were held as early as 1919, but
no records are
available prior to 1925. Nielsen Stadium (indoors) became the site of the State Tournament in 1973. The rst State Tournament for girls tennis was held at White sh Bay. Madison West hosted the next two. Then in 1973, the State Meet moved to the indoor courts of the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison where it has been
since that time.
