ST IVES CUP REPORT
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNING TEAM
John Trewhella (skip), Ross Bolton, Neil Bolton & Matthew Trewhella
The 16th ST IVES CUP, held at the Cambridge Bowling Club, was hugely successful again this year
with 32 teams competing from both metro and country areas. The “Bowls weather Gods” were on
our side with 2 magnificent days of weather.
The event attracted a very even field again this year with quite a few new teams that achieved very
well. It also included country teams and some women bowlers who demonstrated they could mix it
with the men. 16 teams won 3 games or more with only I team undefeated (5 wins) and 7 teams
winning 4 games.
The friendly hospitality of the Cambridge Bowling Club, included plenty of food, a sit down lunch on
Sunday with a very successful auction and a great raffle with 59 prizes. Thanks to all the players for
supporting these important parts of the weekend.
Only one team went through the event undefeated with 5 wins. The winning team was skippered by
John Trewhella, the second team skippered by David Rankin and the third team skippered by Neville
Stevens.
Only 2 teams did not win a game which meant 30 teams received some prize money as $40 was paid
for each win. All 8 place getters, a quarter of the field, received prize money. The last placed team
even received a carton of grog to drown their sorrows.
Going into the last game there was only 1 undefeated team, John Trewhella’s team. They had a very
tight last game against Ron Florances’ team. It went right to the wire and John’s team fell over the line
by 1 shot. If they lost that game they would not have finished in the top 8 teams as they would have
joined the large group of 4 winning games and their points were not as good as the other teams.
The tournament organisers, all members of the Cambridge Bowling Club, are to be commended on
the smooth running of this event. Particular thanks go to the club manager, Ross Bolton, for his smooth
organisation throughout the tournament. The ladies, led by Mary Ann Hart, as always produced a
great lunch and thanks to them all. Don Leeson for his great efforts around the greens and
surroundings.
