Dear Friends,

I don’t need to tell you what a fast-paced world we live in—there are always places to go and
new things to try, and a constant barrage of information. But the things that are important
to us in life haven’t changed: family, friends, community, shared traditions, the value of
knowledge, kindness, and helping others. On these pages you will find an invitation to
connect to the important things, and in the process reconnect to yourself, Judaism, and
each other.

While this catalog mainly highlights our upcoming major programs, there are other wonderful
activities throughout the year including the Elul Sunrise Service, the annual blood drive,
special guest speakers, trips, concerts, and the PTO Gala. The best places to find the most
up-to-date information about events happening at Temple Beth Am are in The Scribe (mailed
to your home every month), on the calendar on our website, and in the weekly eNews e-mail
blast. There you will find all the details, including RSVP info.

I encourage you to read through this guide, and find what sparks your connection. Many of
our programs are free (some, like dinners and movies, have a nominal cost) and almost all
are open to everyone. Feel free to invite your friends or anyone who might be interested
in our activities. If while reading, or at any time throughout the year, you have an idea for a
speaker, program, or activity you would like to bring to the Temple, please reach out and
let us know. Our contact information can be found on the last page of this catalog. To RSVP
to any of the programs listed, please call the Temple Office at 561.747.1109 or email at
[email protected].

I and everyone at Temple Beth Am are excited to embark on this year’s adventure: to learn,
to grow, to connect. I hope you’ll join us.

— COURAGEOUS JEWISH VOICES FILM SERIES —

Ben Gurion: Epilogue (October 25, 2018 at 6:30pm)

the last years of his life, this film paints a revealing portrait of his dedication, vision,
and prophecy for Israel’s future.

Playing God (December 20, 2018 at 6:30pm)

Ken Feinberg has an impossible task: putting a dollar value on tragedy. The story
of the attorney responsible for compensating the victims of Agent Orange, the BP
oil spill, Sandy Hook, and 9/11, this film is about the “cruel justice” of a modern
day King Solomon.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story (January 31, 2019 at 6:30pm)

A remarkable story of one of Hollywood’s leading ladies in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
The inspiration for both Snow White and Cat Woman, Hedy Lamar was an Austrian
Jewish immigrant whose invention helped the Allied forces fight the Nazis in
WWII, yet she died largely forgotten.

— VOICES OF HISTORY FILM SERIES —

An Act of Defiance (March 14, 2019 at 6:30pm)

A political thriller based on the real events of the pivotal 1963 Rivonia Trial in
apartheid South Africa when Nelson Mandela and nine of his black and Jewish
compatriots faced possible death sentences. The film is a powerful exploration of
the sacrifices required to stand against injustice.

Remember Baghdad (April 11, 2019 at 6:30pm)

Five families from the Jewish community look back on a scarcely imaginable time
in Baghdad. This is the forgotten story of Iraq’s once flourishing Jewish population,
and the disintegration of a thriving multi-ethnic society, to one ravaged by war,
through the eyes of its first refugees.

1945 (May 2, 2019 at 6:30pm)

On a summer day in 1945, an Orthodox man and his grown son return to a village

St. George’s Soup Kitchen Social Action Project
(third Monday of the month at 5:00pm)

October 15, November 19, December 17, January 21, February 18,
March 18, April 15, May 20, June 17, July 14, August 19

Temple Beth Am provides dinner for over 200 people
every month. Help us to continue this much needed
community service by donating your time or by dropping
off boxes of penne pasta to the Temple. Children over
the age of 13 are encouraged to volunteer with their
parents. If you are interested in volunteering or would
like more information, please email John Baldwin at
[email protected].

Morse Life (Tuesday, December 25, 2018)

Located in West Palm Beach, Morse Life is an assisted
living community providing residential care to seniors. On
Christmas Day, many of their employees do not get to
celebrate at home with their own families because they
are at work taking care of others. Help allow the staff to
get home a little early this Christmas by volunteering to
help set up and clean up meals, mingle with residents, and
pitching in where needed. Adults and supervised older
children welcome. Check the December issue of
The Scribe for details.

100 Women Who Care (quarterly, at 5:30pm)

November, February, May, August

100 Women Who Care is a secular, national organization
dedicated to supporting local chairities through increased
awareness and cash donations. The Jupiter Chapter
launched in 2014 and it’s first recipient was Family
Promise. Each participant commits to donating $100
four times a year, so that each of our meetings results
in over $10,000 raised for an organization quickly and
easily. During our quarterly, one-hour, meetings, we enjoy
presentations from several local charities and choose one
to receive our donation. This combined donation makes
a real impact in our local community. No committees.
No “homework”. No stress. For more information,
contact Audrey Ades at [email protected].

CONNECT TO GIVING BACK

— MITZVAH OF THE MONTH —

Temple Beth Am’s Mitzvah of the Month provides year-round opportunities to engage in
acts of tikkun olam, repairing the world. If you’d like to suggest an organization for next year,

or to participate, please contact Alissa Frankel at [email protected].

October: Together We Rise – Most children entering foster care receive just two trash bags for
their belongings. Together We Rise provides sweet cases (duffel bags with teddy bears, hygiene
kits, and a blanket) as well as birthday boxes (with candy, party supplies, and gift cards) to foster
kids. Help local children feel cared about by making a financial contribution throughout the month
of October. Every $250 collected will allow us to purchase and put together 20 bags/boxes.

November: Meals on Wheels – Pie It Forward: Join us and Pie It Forward this fall by supporting
Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches this Thanksgiving season. Each pie sold for $25 provides a
week full of fresh, nutritious meals for a homebound senior, along with wellness checks and visits
from a friendly volunteer. And, you get a delicious pie, just in time for Thanksgiving!

December: Back-to-Basics – The Back to Basics Angel Program provides over 7,000 needy children
with the basic necessities of NEW sneakers, socks, underwear, and a toy each year during the
holiday season. Cards with the name of local children will be available in the Lobby. Simply select
as many as you would like, purchase the items, and return to Temple Beth Am in the bag provided.

January: Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County – Going on vacation over the holidays? Don’t
throw away those unused travel toiletries. Gather up all the little bottles from your travels and
participate in our toiletry drive. We will sort and package the toiletries to make kits for those who
are transitioning from homelessness in our local area.

February: Yemin Orde – Yemin Orde is a youth village near Haifa in Israel. It provides a home,
school, and safe haven to hundreds of at-risk immigrant youth from around the world. Donations

collected during the month of February will go directly to supporting these initiatives.

March: St. George’s Center – During the week of Purim, we ask everyone to bring in a box of
penne pasta. It serves two purposes: an environmentally friendly grogger for stamping out Haman’s
name, and a donation to Temple Beth Am’s monthly dinner for St. George’s Soup Kitchen. Our
goal is to collect enough pasta to supply our dinners for the entire year!

April: Tikva – Before Passover, there is a Jewish practice of collecting money to cover the cost
of matzah for the poor of the community. Tikva provides aid to at-risk children and the elderly
in Odessa, including its population of Holocaust survivors. During the month of April we will be
collecting money to provide these survivors with a Passover Seder.

ChilOdruetnr’esach May: Children’s Outreach, Inc. – Temple Beth Am will hold a gently used book drive benefiting
Children’s Outreach, Inc., of Palm Beach County. Drop off your gently used books in the Temple

lobby anytime during the month of May. Please only children’s books in good condition.
